Anyone got an Ikea free home?

Was looking round our house and realised it is a shrine to ikea Blush. And it's 100 miles to our nearest store. It got me wondering whether anyone has avoided Ikea completely, and if so was it intentional or non intentional?

I don't own 1 single thing from Ikea!

Although my nearest store is approx. 200 miles away :o

mawbroon · 08/02/2011 15:11

OH dear. I just "accidently" went there this afternoon with MIL. I didn't mean to guv, honest....

wfrances · 10/02/2011 16:25

i have some glasses bought by my sister, ive only been there once .i love old traditional stuff, so not for me.

nannyl · 10/02/2011 16:56

we have a little table, and i have the odd kitchen things, ie my pink vegetable peeler.

Oh forgot, some of our ensuite bathroom furniture is ikea [blush[

None of our main furniture is ikea though

i have irma cushions and fleece's but use them when camping, so are in my camping stuff as opposed to house stuff.

GrimmaTheNome · 10/02/2011 17:17

I have one bookcase.

Bought in an IKEA in Pennsylvania over 20 years ago. It was the only place we could find pale wood. Our furniture in storage back in the UK was all solid natural ash from Treske, we lived in Thirsk where they're based - all the US furniture seemed to be ugly heavy dark wood and we wanted something that wouldn't look totally out of place.

jamaisjedors · 10/02/2011 17:19

I have never been there.

I keep meaning to, but when I look in the catalogue there's nothing I like (apart from maybe the bedding).

Hellebore1 · 10/02/2011 22:19

No Ikea here. Only went once and it was like an enormous creche!
Although my house is very small it is very old so lately have been adding some older bits to the house to add character.

BeenBeta · 10/02/2011 22:27

No we dont have anything from Ikea.

The first and only time I have ever been in an Ikea was doing a management consulting project.

From an international business point of view it is incredibly impressive in the same way that McDonalds is.

ilovemyhens · 11/02/2011 20:10

We only live 20 minutes from Ikea, so the only things that aren't Ikea in our house are the dcs, dh and the pets Grin oh, and me of course Grin

IlsaLund · 11/02/2011 20:15

I've never been to Ikea - we live miles away from one and have more furniture than we need so I can't see this changing

clam · 20/11/2011 14:01

I am in the process of clearing my downstairs rooms of all things Ikea. It can stay in kids' rooms but have decided I'll only be a proper grownup once I've got rid of it all in "public" rooms.

jimswifein1964 · 20/11/2011 14:06

Only one Ikea thing downstairs (table), and 3 upstairs (kids shelves and beds)

reckoner · 20/11/2011 15:01

We have bookcases, tv cabinet and table & chairs from Ikea. All proper wood not particleboard. And quite a few kitchen stuff like potato peeler and storage boxes.

A few years ago nearly everything was Ikea. Ive been slowly replacing with more durable furniture.

I would never buy a sofa, bed or particleboard from Ikea again.

hiddenhome · 20/11/2011 20:56

We live about 15 miles from Ikea and virtually everything in our house is from there Blush It's affordable and looks okay though, so why worry? We also like their candles, crockery and kitchen utensils.

Gentleness · 20/11/2011 21:50

I'm like you hiddenhome. I have some friends who look down their noses - for example at a chair in a restaurant, saying things like, "It looks like something from Ikea," and I just smirk back at them and feel secretly superior for not being a housey snob.

hiddenhome · 20/11/2011 22:15

Grin Gentleness

We ventured into Furniture Village once and it felt awful. So ponceyfied and just, well, not right Confused

southeastastra · 20/11/2011 22:18

what a bunch of poncey messages

ikea's great because it realises that our furniture needs to change to fit in with us as the majority of the population live in small, boxy houses flats.

i quite like the throwaway nature of it too, but i have quite modernist taste and can't stand old tat Grin

whatdoiknowanyway · 20/11/2011 22:19

I quite like a lot of IKEA stuff but I only have one grater. DD at uni has quite a lot of stuff though.

MrsJAlfredPrufrock · 20/11/2011 22:21

Loyal Ikea customers have Stockholm Syndrome. Grin

I have NO Ikea stuff but for some plastic cups and plates that someone else bought for me. Stupid shop, tacky goods, dreadful shopping experience.

southeastastra · 20/11/2011 22:28

where do you normally shop for furniture?

startail · 20/11/2011 22:49

No, billy book cases everywhere. Living room shelving unit and the coffee table (but that is an oddity and doesn't look ILEA). Shoe rack in the hall.
Not wardrobes, their fitted ones are too highSad. Had to pay almost twice as much for some MFI ones (which, actually still look good many years latter, so I'm not moaning).
Oh and the sideboard and the dinning table. No longer the chairs, most of those fell to bits. Mind you they were £9 each, I'm sure the £54 ones to go with the table would have done better.

NinthWave · 20/11/2011 22:58

Nothing from IKEA here, but mainly cos we don't drive and so can't get to one. Plus it's not really my tastes, like things a bit more baroque/Victorian/eclectic!

NinthWave · 20/11/2011 23:00

...which isn't to say I'm rich or disapprove of IKEA, quite the opposite...my taste has developed largely out of the necessity of buying furniture/fittings in charity shops as we are church-mouse poor

MrsJAlfredPrufrock · 20/11/2011 23:00

Even Micheal Heseltine would turn his nose up at Ikea.

superdragonmama · 20/11/2011 23:14

Mix of Ikea and Old Stuff here.

Inherited most of the Old Stuff, and it's great. And by Old, I don't mean Antique Old, just Old Stuff that other relatives were chucking out. But solid stuff that's kept on going for decades

However, also have thoroughly enjoyed buying new, affordable, modern stuff from Ikea when I could afford it. All the 3 kids had lovely new chests of drawers and wardrobes - that matched Grin - and our house is stuffed with fab Billy bookcases.

Ds1 and DD both have uni rooms stuffed with all the basics they needed from Ikea - affordable and studently chic stuff, and it doesn't matter if they break/lose it coz it was reasonably cheap to start with.

Also had fab Ikea kitchen in my old house, did me excellent service and has lasted over 20 years so far.

Am Big Ikea Fan Grin
