Welcome to the October 2010 Fledgling Flying thread!

This is where from the 1st of the month, we attempt to declutter and follow the 30-step wisdom of the Fat Fairy, with lots of chat and support and mutual motivation along the way. (More info available here!

Many thanks to our September thread leader StillCounting for guiding us through the traumatic back to work and school period with lots of support and guidance!

As usual we will be following a three-pronged approach (and don't worry - we are all at different stages):

  • repeat or start baby steps (again!)
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

Together we can do it! All newcomers welcome!

Happy birthday linzer hope you have a nice day. I know how you feel my dparentals always forget!! Enjoy your wine. Hope your dh makes you feel really special today.

TeasingFireDragons · 08/10/2010 17:07

~~~~~~~~~~~Happy Birthday Linzer~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I hope you get spoilt rotten later by DH.
i have had a lovely relaxing day. physical energy has been spent but am feeling a little emotionally recharged. Hopefully getting new blades sorted. Jumps are coming on. :) Spins look like they might need some drastic action to be taken Confused
However there has been no flying done. I have a ferral child and really cba. Am thinking that i might just cut my loses today, rest up and be productive tomo. It doesnt give me a lot of time to get the stuff done that i wanted but tbh i cba.
Toffeefudgecake · 08/10/2010 17:28
As I have just finished my latest batch of work and both boys are busy, I can now browse MN without feeling guilty.
We have chosen DS1's new school - not the one we saw last night, which we visited as a comparison. Luckily DS1 agrees with us and seems really excited about it, so that's a weight off our mind. Lovely to have made the decision at last. It's the local school, so there won't be any problem with him getting in.
Minimal routines today, as I had to finish work. But did manage to stick to my morning routine, which means I'm fairly up to date with most things and the kitchen is respectable.
PMPY So sorry to hear that your BIL is still so ill. Really hope you get some good news soon.
Ihatecobw and Feet - Queens of Self-sufficiency! I am so impressed by your foraging skills. Feet - sorry about your stinky cold
Linzer - Sending you lots of sympathy across the MN wires. It must be hard sometimes to be in another country. And I know what a struggle it can be having a dyslexic child. It is such a relief when they get the help and understanding they need, but so awful when they don't. Sounds as if her teacher doesn't 'get' her, which is very discouraging. Hope you can get it sorted out.
Ellie - have a good weekend away
Still - hope you feel better soon.
Teasing - hope training cures your fuzzy brain and that you get meds soon.
Swan - great PM routine. I'm afraid mine is just 'turn the telly on' these days.
Nettie - welcome back. Glad you had a lovely time.
My list for this evening is:
Cook dinner (recipe from resourcefulcook - did their budget weekly menu this week for £29!)
Fold dry washing
Put away
Put wet load in tumbledrier
Ironing???
Washing up
Share bottle with DH (he's drinking again Smile)
Take black binbag up to DS2's bedroom and throw stuff in so we can see the floor again
Have a good weekend all.
Toffeefudgecake · 08/10/2010 17:32
Linzer - sorry, didn't get that it was your birthday today. I often feel miserable on my birthday too. As TFD says, hope your DH spoils you later.
Toffeefudgecake · 08/10/2010 17:33
TFD - CBA days are definitely allowed Grin. Enjoy it.
LinzerTorte · 08/10/2010 17:40
Feeling much better after a cup of tea - the answer to many a problem! - although that doesn't mean I'll be doing without the wine later. Grin Thanks for the birthday wishes - it isn't actually my birthday until Sunday, but we won't be getting any more post until Monday which is why I was feeling sorry for myself (apologies for any confusion).
Nettie Glad you enjoyed Thomasland - I can think of another little boy who would enjoy that too. Smile
Teasing Good to hear that you've managed to recharge your emotional batteries; sounds like a good idea to have a rest today and conserve your energy for the weekend.
Toffee Thanks for sympathy, chocolates and wine - much appreciated! It must be a relief to have the school sorted out and it's great that your DS is excited about it - that's half the battle, I think.
Stillcounting · 08/10/2010 17:57
Is it your birthday today Linzer???!!! So sorry that I missed this!!!!! Many happy returns!!!!! Alles Gute zum Geburtstag!
Hope your day gets better!!! (I am having a "fed up (of being ill)" day too so am handing over a consolatory glass of champagne or three) Cheers!!
[SC cracks open a bottle for Linzer and Linzer's dh (now known as blessed donator of hob-knobs) and all fellow Fledglings ...]
"Schade" seems a horrible comment to make in the circumstances (your dd is doing so brilliantly handling dyslexia in multi-lingual environment) - I'd be very fed up at that remark that too.
However, (straining to see this in best possible light and everything) might she possibly mean it in an encouraging way ie your dd is a v good (much improved) student so it's a shame this particular exercise is wrong ....??? V. regrettable choice of vocab though!
Having said all that I have been taken aback by "directness" of dd's teachers' comments - it is one of "those" cultural differences. Yesterday I wrote a note on a maths exercise that dd had got wrong saying "I will go over this with her again at the weekend". The teacher's reply was "no thank you, you will probably confuse her"!!!! Grin
Mahoosive waves to Nettie [hands over Dramamine tablets] Your trip sounds great!
Swan am intrigued by your plastic horses ...
Oh and I endlessly dream of "land" too... preferably with livestock on it .... including some heavy horses ... a donkey .... and a llama ... a herd of guinea pigs and ....and a veg plot ....and a wood (now why didn't I buy a Euromillions ticket today???)
Teasing apologies about "back-up" - as fellow sufferer just wanted to show support but I got the wrong end of the stick - glad you are feeling better now though!
Must stop rambling on and go and talk to newly returned dh (that sounds horrid I know but after virtual 24/7 7-yr-old chatter I was just enjoying the relative peace of Mnset ....)
Have a great weekend one and all ....
Stillcounting · 08/10/2010 18:03
Aaarggghhhh!! Sorry!! X posts Linzer Happy Birthday for SUNDAY!!!!! Hope you have a really lovely weekend.
Toffee good news about the school! Enjoy your evening - bottoms up and all that!
Swan btw I particularly like the "dithering" bit of your routine, (something I excell in ....!!!)
Nettiespagetti · 08/10/2010 19:06
Happy birthday linzer hope you have a nice day. I know how you feel my dparentals always forget!! Enjoy your wine. Hope your dh makes you feel really special today.
MiniMarmite · 08/10/2010 19:36
Evening All
Happy Birthday for Sunday Linzer - I baked you some Biscuit Biscuit!
SC sorry you are feeling unwell and fed-up.
PMPY really sorry to hear about BIL
I've been trying to convince DH that Thomasland is a good idea Nettie but he's not having any of it!
Well, we're having an odd sort of week here, we seem to have had a visit from aliens who have exchanged our normally smiley and co-operative toddler with an unhappy little chap Sad. He has had a bad cold and we also think he is starting to realise the implications of Mummy's growing belly. He is normally such a Daddy's boy but won't go to DH at all at the moment Sad. He did try to help me hang the washing out this morning though but decided that all the clean, dry clothes waiting to be ironed were ideal candidates!
I have a little cleaning and tidying to do and some cooking before our guests arrive tomorrow but I'm going to keep it fairly low key - I saw the midwife today and she advised that, given my low blood pressure, intense nesting activities weren't the greatest idea...so back to my naturally slovenly ways Grin.
Have a good evening and weekend everyone.
Stillcounting · 08/10/2010 20:57
Thanks Mini I am just feeling sorry for myself really!!! Never had a day's illness in my life until I passed my mid 40s. It's been downhill ever since Grin but tbh I could do a lot more to help myself in terms of exercise, diet and visiting the doc a bit more frequently!!
So, enough 'venting' and 'whinging' on my part!!!
Sorry to hear that your ds is out of sorts Mini. Hope he feels much better very soon ...it must be so bewildering for a toddler to try and comprehend pregnancy and all that it entails.
Slovenly is good in these circs! Hope that your guests will be waiting on you and not the other way around and that you manage to get some rest this weekend!!
G'night all!
MrsDinky · 08/10/2010 20:59
Evening all,
I'm going to keep it short tonight as I have a headache and am very tired (plus some of you have been doing some nice round-ups today anyway).
Harvest Festival today, both DCs in the same one, it's the first "performance" for DD, and she did us proud, stood up straight, looked at the parents and spoke out clearly. DS as usual looked distracted, fidgeted and mumbled, never mind! He is in my good books though as he has just sneaked back downstairs to give me a cuddle to make my head better.
MiniM - hope DS returns to usual soon, I would say it is very normal for him to be unsettled. DS developed an annoying habit when I was very large in the bump with DD, whenever I was pushing him round Sainsburys in the trolley he would lean forward, whip my top up and shout baby (I'm sure it must have put the other customers right off their food buying). Re: Thomas, if you can't persuade DH to go to Thomasland, why not come down here to Hampshire to the Watercress Line, we have Thomas Days out every year at Easter and in August and they are brilliant. We live nearby and have been a couple of times, highly recommend it.
Linzer - maybe your friend's cards are just going to be late, I am not very good at getting cards for weekend birthdays posted in time [guilty emoticon].
Right, DH has popped out to fetch takeaway food, I am going to do tomorrow's links and go and put my feet up and ignore the mess in the kitchen. And the ironing. And the clothes piles on the DCs floors. And the toys all over the landing. That wasn't a very short post was it Confused.
sc thx for dramamene. I have a newfound respect for peace as my ds 4yr has developed a penchant for not stopping talking!! What with that and Dd incessant chatter and why oh why's! I feel bit stir crazy if I don't talk to someone else each day. Hope u had nice chat with dh
Morning all :) I got up to watch F1 qualifying at 6 and it was rained off Angry
Nettie yay for Thomasland :) I'm also very impressed that you're wrapping presents now, I always end up doing it the night before. I've promised myself I will not do that this christmas.
Hope your head is ok this morning MrsDinky we've got harvest festival in two weeks, I may melt.
Dds consultant said this year is particularly bad in terms of colds/viruses SC so might not just be you
Have a nice day MM sounds like the perfect day to put your feet up and let your guests help.
Aw Linzer that's rubbish! I'm useless at cards though, it doesn't mean they're not thinking of you. Hope you have a really lovely day tomorrow.
Emotional recharging is very FlyLady Teasing well I count it as so anyway Grin
Me too SC I want chickens and an orchard, oh and a pack of collies :)
It is utterly miserable here today, I'm sticking to routines, getting on top of the washing and ds wants to go to the bookshop.
TeasingFireDragons · 09/10/2010 09:17
TeasingFireDragons · 09/10/2010 15:50
Arrrgh it is one of those days. Ds is in his bedroom and i am hiding out. Cleaning is preferable to being the same room as the devil child today. I am counting down to bedtime.
swanriver · 09/10/2010 19:55
no housework done today! is my only message.
TFD it can be like trying to tack against the wind,in sailing parlance (Blush not actually a sailor,but I'msure you know what I mean),trying to get things one is determined to do,with unruly kidsin tow. You've done fantastically well, give ds somecheesecake and a hug and I hope you have a better day tomorrow.
[also whisper] ds2 had two nervous breakdowns today,only solved by giving him a uzzleof great complexity to do and taking him away from rest of family.
We are watching Merlin now Grin
swanriver · 09/10/2010 19:56
puzzle not uzzle
swanriver · 09/10/2010 19:59
Linzer I think the standard of education may be much higher in Austria, thus more demanding. Certainly dh when he looks at the kids' work is shocked by lack of criticism from the school. Dd is appalling at spelling, thereis never any feedback on it or red lines in her work.Which I suppose is bad in another way. But, I, would have a word with her teacher - it doesn't seem right that they should dent her confidence like that.
swanriver · 09/10/2010 20:03
Also Linzer I realise I never send any birthday cards,you have made me feel thoroughly guilty - I see it would give people great happiness to be remembered.
pushmepullyou · 09/10/2010 20:40
No housework done here either swan Smile. Have put washing and dishwasher on, but spent most of the day on the way too, from or at the hospital for DH to visit BIL.
Back later (hopefully), but need to get off the computer and pay attention to dd Grin
LinzerTorte · 09/10/2010 20:44
No housework done here today either, although I was in a decluttering mood and rediscovered all my old teenage/early twenties diaries in the process. Have decided to keep the only one I can read without cringeing (1986/87 - before I had really discovered boys; unfortunately it is not half as interesting either. Sample entry: "There can be nothing more boring than plants.") DD2 has already expressed an interest in reading them, so I must get them out of the house asap.
The DC were particularly difficult today - the girls were awful, whiny and not nice towards their little brother so DD1 was not allowed to go to the puppet theatre this afternoon and DD2 wasn't allowed to stay overnight with DS's friend as planned (I think the mother was secretly relieved, as she has DS and another friend to stay as well as her own three - all under 5; I honestly don't know how she does it).
Teasing I feel your pain, especially wrt wet beds - I had everything from the pillow to the duvet to wash this morning despite DS having a nappy on.
Bob Envy of your trip to the bookshop; we do have a couple of bookstores here, but they're just not the same as in the UK (the fact that they're full of books in German doesn't help!).
MrsD Sounds like the harvest festival went well - you must have been very proud of your DD. Hope your headache is better now; I'm sure your DS's cuddle must have helped. Smile
SC Hope you're feeling better today. I'm worried that my lack of exercise and could-be-better diet are going to catch up with me before too long; the fact that the doctor could tell from my blood test that I wasn't getting enough exercise was a bit of a wake-up call. Not quite enough for me to have got round to doing anything about it yet, however...
MiniM Thanks for the biscuits. Smile Hope your DS is a bit more "in sorts" now, but like others have said it seems to be quite a normal stage for toddlers to go through when there's a new baby on the way.
swan Teachers certainly aren't afraid to use their red pens here; they are very big on handwriting, correct grammar and spelling etc. but don't seem to encourage much in the way of creativity - DD1 is in her third year of school and has done virtually nothing in the way of creative writing at all.
No need to feel guilty either - I can see now (and knew at the time, really) that I was completely overreacting. (Although I may be a tad upset if there's still nothing by Monday!) I've had an e-mail from one friend apologising for the fact that her card is going to be late and have just had two messages on FB (three counting yours yesterday Nettie - thank you Smile), so things are looking up. Grin
Hope everyone's having a good weekend. Smile
MrsDinky · 09/10/2010 21:43
Evening all,
Well, a bit of a rubbish day here too, I have felt completely exhausted all day and have retired to bed twice. Minimal housework has been done (and it has been by DH). I have just ferried the DCs around to their activities and DH played with them in-between. It sounds as though most of us had had a not-so-brilliant day today,hoping it all improves tomorrow (esp for our Birthday Girl Lnzer)
Would anyone mind if I passed on the roundup again, as Linzer has managed a lovely one? Need to get an early night tonight.
