What could I put above an olive tree on the stairs?

Hi everyone

So the wall that you see as your going up the stairs is annoying me trying to find something that will look right with my olive tree , I really like my olive tree here and it doesn't get in our way going up stairs but I've tried 2 photos one above the other but it looked wrong , then I tried a large photo there but it just didn't look right. What could I put above the olive tree that will suit? Don't want a mirror there and I tried a wall lamp and that didn't look right either.

It doesn’t look right to me and won’t it start growing out, blocking access?
Better to have pictures on the wall drawing the eye upwards.

TeenLifeMum · 30/08/2026 12:25

Looks like it’s been left on the stairs to take up. I think I’d move the olive tree and put pictures up the stairs with maybe a mirror at the top.

Dare I say, chat gpt is really helpful for visualising options.

It's a faux olive tree not real , I did like it there but if others also say it doesn't look right there is another room it can go in I can put it near the window next to my office desk. I'll try and get a photo of the large artwork I brought for that wall to see what you all think it's just I always feel that without the olive tree the corner looks empty but again I'm not interior expert which is why I like everyone's opinion on here

Like someone mentioned, Chat GPT is really good at this sort of thing...

Another vote for moving the tree and replacing with mirrors and some artwork.

MerryRobin · 30/08/2026 12:43

Ok so I moved the tree to show you the artwork I did buy but wondering if it's the wrong piece for the space and again I can hang this elsewhere.

The longer pieces look better from the AI photos. A hanging rug in a neutral colour maybe?

MerryRobin · 30/08/2026 14:18

Hubby thinks we should keep the tree there as we like it there and it isn't in the way at all , he thinks we should go for a landscape image instead of a portrait one

Like this I'd properly hang it a little higher so it's not not right near the tree.

That plant looks like a massive trip hazard right there.

About 750 people in the UK die every year from falling down stairs and that tree is right on the turning point of the top of the stairs.

MyManinCaracas · 30/08/2026 15:01

I actually like it the way you have. Don’t hang the picture higher, but do add one more, smaller picture above it. Always group in 3s.

LibertyLily · 30/08/2026 15:08

I know I would fall over the tree, but I'm very clumsy and have fallen down stairs when there's been no obstacles 🙄 If you're sure you won't, then I prefer the landscape and I'd keep it in that position to 'anchor' it to the tree, definitely not move it higher. I'd also add a smaller picture as suggested by @MyManinCaracas, although I'd actually hang it to the side of the tree, beneath the landscape.

Pixiedust49 · 30/08/2026 15:10

I’d put fairy lights in the tree. I love a fairy light 😂

Minasama · 30/08/2026 15:12

Olive trees presumably need bright sunlight, since they grow in very sunny places. I don’t think it will stay alive there. You’d need a plant that thrives in shade by the look of it?

Giftspread · 30/08/2026 15:18

The trees fake, so no need for sunlight. I'd never put anything on the stairs, too dangerous.

Don't hang it any higher! Artwork that's too high up looks stupid.

You could potentially get a tall slim table (almost like a cross between a plant stand and a table) and raise the olive tree right up.

Wadsworthy · 30/08/2026 15:28

Why would you have a fake plastic tree in your house? Replace it with photos or a real painting or something. No wonder nothing looks right there. The plastic dust catcher is wrong.

Leave it just like that.

ramonaquimby · 30/08/2026 15:31

The tree is too squashed in the corner. See also :trip hazard

So that you can trip over the table legs instead of the tree.

MyManinCaracas · 30/08/2026 15:42

Unless you have a cat lying in wait I don’t see anything that’s a trip hazard.

Ha, I was going to suggest a picture of a tree above and to one side! Good to know I think like a large language model 😏

My other idea was some fake hanging plants.

No, DH is thinking about 'filling the space' but that's not the point. Your image here is too heavy. The tree now looks like a sad supporting act to the giant picture.

You know the tree picture the AI used in its final image? Like that, only (I think) an oval picture for preference. With a light frame.

Or a fake hanging plant or two.

MerryRobin · 30/08/2026 15:53

Ok I get it some of you don't like fake trees but some of us do and there literally everywhere all over Instagram I used to hate them but then I found one I really liked and some people have been fooled into thinking it's real who have seen it in person. Regarding the trip hazard it's really not in the way when we walk past our feet are nowhere near the tree base even our body's don't brush past it or even touch it as we are going past and it's not squashed either it is a slim olive tree that's how it came.

I actually like the landscape idea
