What makes you happy with your kitchen?

What is the one or two things in your kitchen that make you really happy with it?

We are looking to do some improvements to ours this year and I'm looking for inspiration.

I bloody love my kitchen but my favourite things in it are the induction hob and the quooker tap! 🙌🙌🙌

DontCallMeBaby · 14/05/2026 18:02

Everything that’s not the badly designed filth magnet it was six months ago. Lots of things already mentioned, but I’ll add lights controlled by kinetic switches. They power themselves, stick on the walls, and still work when the WiFi is out (but when it’s working they’re smart switches).

DirtyBird · 14/05/2026 20:12

The granite countertops, custom cabinets and all the storage I have. And the peninsula, it's my main food prep space

butternut123 · 14/05/2026 20:36

I put sockets in some cupboards to hide my kettle, toaster and coffee machine. An island that seats 4 people. Sofa area for socialising

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 14/05/2026 20:45

It's a decent size, lots of light, in built chopping board, corner revolving cupboard

Jellycatspyjamas · 14/05/2026 20:47

The hot water tap makes me happy in a way I couldn’t think possible.

Pull out larder unit holds a huge amount of stuff all neatly organised because I can see everything, nothing lurking at the back of shelves here.

My Neff hide and slide is fantastic - lots of different functions including an air frying setting.

My French style fridge freezer, can see everything in the fridge, and freezer drawers are so practical and fit loads of stuff.

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/05/2026 20:48

My fridge and my engineered oak floor.

StellaOlivetti · 14/05/2026 20:49

The larder. It’s lovely and big.
The wall of sliding doors to the garden.

ReignOfError · 14/05/2026 20:54

Full height cupboard with pull out drawers that I use as a larder- it holds masses.

Deep drawers instead cupboards.

A shallow cupboard with lots of shelves for spices - it’s great to be able to see them all easily.

It’s a little thing, but pleases me: my window sills are the same material and colour as my doors/drawer front.

What is a French style fridge freezer please? Thanks!

I don’t cook. My partner designed our kitchen. He’s happy and as long as there’s a coffee machine I don’t care what it’s like really.

HappilyHarriet · 14/05/2026 21:37

beasmithwentworth · 13/05/2026 19:24

Nothing. It’s 20 years old and on its last legs. I am an avid cook but even I struggle to enjoy cooking in there these days.
Leaving my kitchen makes me happy.

I’m in the same boat - a kitchen dreamer. My kitchen is falling apart, no drawers, poor storage, I hope to do it up in a couple of years.
I’m planning on a tea/ appliance cupboard and some kind of larder cupboard. Also, even if we do a small extension to let in more light, it will still be quite gloomy.
So, if anyone fancies sharing I would love to see some pics to inspire me, particularly of colour schemes for dark kitchens and the great storage features.

I think that poster was referring to a French door style fridge freezer

My Quooker boiling water tap. My Spanish tiles. I am tall so had the countertops higher than average (but not unusually so - my shorter DD uses it fine). Drawers rather than cupboards. That it is open to the rest of the downstairs - all open plan but as there’s a U shaped peninsula also segregated.

lljkk · 16/05/2026 10:39

When it's clean and I know I don't have to clean it again in near future, lol.
Guilty of not RTFT.

MyDuvetDay · 16/05/2026 10:45

My top end espresso machine

Twoshoesnewshoes · 16/05/2026 10:48

My solid black quartz worktop
my karndean oak effect floor
both are indestructible and seem to look better as they get older!

Fantailed · 16/05/2026 10:49

The flow of space works, I love the colours (considered deeply eccentric by the fitters and painters), and the view of the garden.

patooties · 16/05/2026 10:55

My hidden bins. Pan and plate drawers. Hot water tap (when the fucking thing works) I’ve got a full height integrated fridge and freezer which I like too.
i like by big table that can seat 12. My pick walls. My French doors. My disco ball and the pictures we have on the wall.

LemograssLollipop · 16/05/2026 11:00

@ChristmasBaby2026 would you be happy to share a pic of your tea station? Love the sound of it!

NormasArse · 16/05/2026 11:04

The 1970s jug which currently holds tulips. It makes me happy every time I go in there.

LemograssLollipop · 16/05/2026 11:04

Why are drawers favoured over cupboards?

Why are drawers favoured over cupboards?

I'm surprised you need to ask!

To get to the back of cupboards, especially the low down ones, you need to squat/bend over or even sit on the floor to reach deep into the back of them. With a drawer- you just pull it out to see what is in there!

KaleKitchen · 16/05/2026 11:58

My turquoise Lacanche cooker. It makes my heart sing every time I see it.

Giggorata · 16/05/2026 12:00

My kitchen is another one that wouldn’t be popular on Mumsnet. It is old and wooden but has been restored and has a honey glow that I love.
Extra lower cupboards have been replicated by my wonderful joiner so that the bins are hidden away.
He also created extra cupboards above the wall cabinets, painted the same colour as the walls.I bought a selection of yellow ceramic knobs for all the cupboards.

I like colour and hate neutrals and white everything, and my kitchen reflects this. The sink is dark green ceramic, the microwave and fridge are green, even my air fryer is bright yellow! There are coloured tile splashbacks and a dark green worktop. The walls and ceiling are bright yellow, so every day is sunny.
I have a rack to display the (green obvs) le Creuset pans.
Loads of dark green cast iron kitchen stuff, like vegetable rack, wine rack and mug tree.
I have a distressed display cabinet for the crockery, a bastard mixture of Rayware Olivio, and anything green and yellow. Lots of sunflowers.
I have a walk in pantry and a huge store cupboard built into an alcove.
I have room for a Victorian dining table and a pew.
The glass doors on wall cupboards have been replaced by stained glass. I am planning to do the same with the back door, which is falling to bits, aided by a dog who took a fancy to the trim.
It is not at all posh but all of these things make me happy.
