What is the one or two things in your kitchen that make you really happy with it?

We are looking to do some improvements to ours this year and I'm looking for inspiration.

Pull out double bin
Kidney style blind corner storage
A drawer each for pans, plates and bowls
Pull out spice/cooking oil rack beside cooker
Pull out tea towel rack beside cooker.

I live on my own, so don't need tons of cupboards, larders and whatnot, so the above is just right for me. I don't regret anything, or wish for something I might see in other people's kitchen. Mine is fine!

Acropolis49 · 13/05/2026 19:19

Quartz, including hob splashback, sink backsplash and windowsill.

Full height integrated larder fridge. I dont like American fridge freezers.

Bin cupboard. With sections for recycling and general waste. Love it.

Large, deep drawers.

WonderingWanda · 13/05/2026 19:20

Definitely deep drawers for plates and pans. Tall built in fridge and freezer rather than under the counter. Granite worktops because they don't stain as easily as quartz.

theturtleswims · 13/05/2026 19:21

Drawers instead of cupboards under worktop.
Pullout spice drawer next to hob
Pan and cooking utensil drawers under the hob.
Two proper ovens.

Nothing. It’s 20 years old and on its last legs. I am an avid cook but even I struggle to enjoy cooking in there these days.
Leaving my kitchen makes me happy.

That was me a few years ago. While saving for a refurb I cleared out everything from every nook and cranny. Got rid of an enormous amount of crap. Reorganised the cupboards, treated myself to lovely new pots and pans, minimised the stuff I had on the countertop and trained myself to try to keep it that way. It kept me sane until I could replace it.

Would anything like that help make you a bit happier?

I think a lot of MNers would absolutely hate my kitchen. It’s a rickety old farmhouse kitchen so lots isn’t perfect at all. But I love that everything feels solid, neutral and natural. Cupboards made by a local carpenter 20 years ago, a travertine floor, and a lovely big pantry cupboard that takes up a side wall. When I feel in need of a little therapy, I do a big pantry cupboard sort out.I also like being able to have a big table in the middle and having French doors that open onto the patio. The primary decorative element are labradors in three different colours who know the warmest spots on the floor.

Sadly, our old Aga is on its last legs and the quote to have my fantasy cornflower blue Everhot fitted in its place was eye watering!

My dream kitchen! ❤️

Willowskyblue · 13/05/2026 19:43

Deep drawers and my bins drawer. Makes the kitchen much sleeker and lovely not having visible bins.

Onefortheroad25 · 13/05/2026 19:43

We got a new kitchen a year ago. I love our island with hob and downdraught extractor.
Also pull out units and swivel corner press so I can find everything.
Pull out bins!

MigGirl · 13/05/2026 22:53

Some really good ideas thanks everyone, we aren't doing a complete replacement just revamping. But there are options to change things and you've all given me some great ideas.

Induction hob
Neff 'Slide and Hide' oven
plinth lighting
'Le Mans' corner units

sesquipedalian · 13/05/2026 23:04

Two ovens and warming drawer. Large induction hob. Lots of plug sockets.

puffylovett1 · 13/05/2026 23:10

Love my big deep drawers, walk in pantry and plant shelf. Wish I had gone for a range with chimney over instead of hob on island, because I love the look - although the hob on island is far more social and easy to keep clean.
also love my vinyl wrapped mdf and mouldy wood worktops cos we can’t afford the quartz we planned 5 years ago 🙄🤣

allthehangers · 13/05/2026 23:13

The 20 magnetic spice pots that I have fixed in two vertical rows just inside either side of my on-counter pantry cupboard. They are stored in the cool and dark which is better than having them all on a shelf near the cooker getting dusty and sticky and deteriorating in the heat and light. Yet I can see them all as soon as I open the doors.

Odoreida · 13/05/2026 23:22

Two sinks - one right by the oven for draining (mine is round) and one big one for washing up.
My amazing pantry with catering-style wire rack shelves. Allows airflow, means you can see everything, super hygienic, lessens the risk of rodents and moths. Everything in the pantry is unopened - once a packet is opened it moves into a small covered until it is used up. My kitchen is the most organised place in my house and indeed my life

Sounds heavenly.
My kitchen is also the most organised space in the house. Gor to admit, I'm envious of your wore shelved pantry situation

beasmithwentworth · 14/05/2026 06:52

@fantam thankyou! You feel my pain then! You are right, there are definitely improvements that could make me feel better. I know there are far worse situations to be in but I’m not even close to ever being able to afford a refurb which (wrongly I know) leaves me thinking ‘well what’s the point?’ .. but you are right I think I need to reframe it. Thanks for the suggestions!

ChristmasBaby2026 · 14/05/2026 07:30

Neff Slide and hide - don’t think I will ever go back.

A pull out pantry cupboard.

My tea and coffee making station - our kitchen is tiny and everyone, including DH, said it was a bad idea but I did it anyway and it’s the thing everyone comments on when they come to our house. It’s just a recessed bit of worktop with some shelves underneath which also gives extra storage but it’s more than the sum of its parts!

Omg yes to pull out bins! Before we did the kitchen we used to just kick the bins around. So much tidier and nicer all round!

whattheysay · 14/05/2026 07:35

It’s large and very bright lots of windows and a sunroom. Range cooker. American fridge with plumbed water and ice. But the light and sun is my favourite, I spend the making my day in here

Lunaballoon · 14/05/2026 07:47

The garden view. One end is entirely bi-fold doors so that whatever we’re doing - cooking, eating or whatever we can look out at the changing seasons.

We used to have a tiny galley kitchen so knocking through to the dining room and adding the bi-folds has definitely made me happy.

Smallorveryfaraway · 14/05/2026 12:08

The colours, it's light and bright even though it's a north facing room. And because it's fairly new and I put a lot of thought into layout and design, it's fantastically organised and everything has it's place. The easiest room in the house to keep clean and tidy as a result.

Paytovote · 14/05/2026 12:13

Yes to drawers!

My fav thing is actually streamlining the contents.

Everything works hard and that makes me very happy 😊

Ie. I have falcon tins, so that covers hob, bake and store/ freeze.
I have ceramics from Ikea. That covers serve and bake and microwave.
Pyrex - microwave, serve, mix,

Basically if it’s not dual function it’s not coming in to clutter my space.

bilbodog · 14/05/2026 12:17

Double belfast sink, pale yellow units, solid oak worktop, wallpaper at one end and an AGA.

Meadowfinch · 14/05/2026 12:43
  • It faces east and has skylights and French windows, so it gets all the early morning sun
  • It overlooks a water meadow
  • It's 4m x 5m so not cramped
  • It has a little breakfast table where I can sit with a coffee and watch the sunrise before anyone else is awake. 😊
  • White marble tops, pale oak cupboards, grey ceramic floor, white and turquoise walls
