Has anyone found anything interesting left in a house by the old owners ?

im interested in this esp old houses ( I had a friend who found dinky cars )

First house I bought we found empty bottles of wine in the loft. It was a new house and I could easily get into the loft without ladders so I think the previous owner was throwing them up there to hide them.

House I grew up in was an Edwardian semi. Dad found a collection of swords and knives in the understairs cupboard.

Only old Xmas decs. I returned them to the sellers!

We found some very very very old saucy (probably classed as pork back then but tame compared to stuff now) images in a shed on the garden of our Victorian home

The previous owners of our house were a lovely older couple where the husband was Italian. For months after moving in, we kept finding little crosses we hadn't noticed before or pictures of the Virgin Mary behind cupboard doors, which was funny because we're Jewish!

Books of memorabilia- previous owner was a headmaster. Includes a Christmas Carole’s and dinner menu of school Xmas celebrations 1989.

All sorts the previous occupant had died and his children sold the house but didn't clear it. There was even cups with teabags in the sink.
50 place mats.
several womens wigs.
Old tools.
Dc were amazed by the ols tapes and tape recorder with a biro stuck to thd top eith blue tac.
A secret cupboard in the back of the built in wardrobe with a wind break and buckets and spades.
Had 4 skips of rubbish.

When we stripped a bedroom wallpaper in our old house (after having been there about 5 years) we found writing on the wall. It was written by two people professing their love for each other and very sweet. We took photos before re wallpapering

Handwritten planning documents, original deeds and local covenant documents etc. from when the land was developed and house built in 1880s.

For our purchase, all the documentation was online. No one will even have record of us living here in 150 years. So much history in actual pen and paper documents.

Oh, and I left our wellies in the garage of our old house and didn't notice until at least 6 months later when we needed them and felt it was too late to ask the new owners.

Readers Digest Cookery Year cookbook - I was delighted as I’d grown up with it and it had lots of favourite recipes.

DH was not quite so thrilled with the petrol lawnmower as it meant he’d be mowing the lawn.

I've just stripped out my son's bedroom & uncovered the classic "[Child] woz ere" in bubble writing dated 1991.
Also his sister's declaration of undying love for A-ha.
Finally a notebook with recipes in behind the built in wardrobe, a few of which I will be trying out.

It was built 1930 but converted into 1 house in 1960 and remodelled in 1990, so any really ancient treasures are lost i fear.

Hidden at back of airing cupboard.

We found a glass bottle with a message inside from 40 yrs ago from the then family that owned the house. Hidden down below the water tank for the loo in a kind of crevice in the wall. We’re having a new kitchen put in at the moment, the builders have built a new wall because ours are crooked (160 yr old house) and I can still access behind it as the electrical sockets haven’t gone on yet. I’m so tempted to add another message to the bottle and put it there to be found many decades later!

I’ve just sold a house. Cleaned out the loft and I’ve found loads of old books from the late 1800s/ early 1900s. And 2 handwritten diaries from the 1930s - wish I could read the handwriting a bit better - the lady who wrote them was obviously counting down to something as she’d write “17 weeks to XXX”, 16 weeks etc but I can’t make out what.

Not sure what to do with them all.

Opened the wheelie bin only to find the top stuffed with black and red kinky underwear 🤣
Also in another house several pairs of boxed Polish shoes, never worn.

A very big, heavy and old suitcase in the manky cellar. It was the only thing down there. I was seriously worried I’d find a body inside, but alas it was only books from their presumably uni course.

Several barrels of gunpowder in a shed … we had to get them removed by the local police firearms team

When my husband was a student he and his mates lived in a house straight out of The Young Ones. A plumber came to fix a leak in the bathroom and when he removed the bath panel there were human bones in there. Turned out that previous students who lived in the flat had hidden a plastic skeleton.

We found a huge fish tank in our loft, no idea how they got it up there because it won’t fit through the hatch
