Is this lampshade too big for this hallway?

After years of living with some cheap shades from B&M that were meant to be a stop gap when we moved in. I want to get a shade for my downstairs open plan hallway and adjacent dining room, also open plan, so as you come down the stairs both light fixtures would be visible. I have this rattan shade elsewhere in the house and thought I could make it work in this space, it’s 40cm diameter. I’m thinking of getting the matching larger shade for over the dining table. Does this shade look okay in the hallway? Please ignore the mess and clutter in the background! Thanks

I like the oversized look. It's a statement piece, better than a twiddly little thing. Just so long as there's enough headroom underneath it for people to pass.

BendSinister · 06/02/2026 11:15

It looks the right size for the space. As long there's enough headroom for people to pass under it, as a pp said, and whether the light it sheds, when switched on, is pleasant, and not so weirdly crosshatched it makes the hall feel weird.

I think it looks fab, but, you know what? I'd paint it. You could paint it pale green or pink to pick up one of the colours in that botanical pic you've got on the wall.

Lampzade · 06/02/2026 11:18

I am not keen on the colour. It should be paler
Size is fine

Snippit · 06/02/2026 11:27

Wow, super funky, love it 🤗

StephensLass1977 · 06/02/2026 11:35

Great light shade! Size is fine. It makes a lovely statement.

PS. what mess and clutter?? 😀

Doryismyspiritanimal · 06/02/2026 14:28

definitely give it a spray paint. I love it, its not the scale (particularly with the ?wickery effect, it's not a "solid" lampshade) it's the colour. As pp said, go lighter, and if you still don't love it, you could freecycle it and get another with minimal investment.

doobaz · 08/02/2026 04:09

It looks great. Please don't paint it.

It wouldn’t be my pick as I think it could hold lots of dust. I could imagine my eldest giving it a hit somehow too…..

Is it symmetrical to the door frame if it wasn’t that would bug me 🤣 I think it’s the way the pic has been taken.

If you love it though get the other one for the table

zebrastripesarefun · 08/02/2026 05:09

Lovely shades. I wouldn’t change the colour

ChangingSocks · 08/02/2026 05:10

Also a fan of oversized lighting. Make a statement! Why not. Love it!

RedRiverShore6 · 08/02/2026 05:54

Hallways need a big shade, the sort you wouldn't put elsewhere, it looks nice. I have a very large William Morris one in my hall, it wouldn't really look right anywhere else

justtheotheronemrswembley · 08/02/2026 10:23

I wouldn't paint it either. It's got a retro look and that is what makes it a great statement piece. Change the colour and it won't give the same effect at all.

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 08/02/2026 11:43

I have a 40cm similar one in a narrow hallway which works well.

Agree with PP about photo angle, makes it look a bit off.

What's the clearance off the floor?
That's a good way of gaging.

Gatekeeper · 08/02/2026 12:00

Don't paint it! Looks good the colour it is. Painted wicker never looks good to me

Mt563 · 08/02/2026 18:08

Love it. The main thing I've gathered from reading design blogs is items need to be bigger than we generally think to look intentional and stylish, you got it perfect!

whymadam · 08/02/2026 18:57

It's great. Better big than small. Enjoy!

ImPamDoove · 08/02/2026 19:03

I’m not a fan of pendant lights, but I think if you’re going to have one - go big.

letshavetea · 10/02/2026 04:01

It looks fab. Like th size. Don’t paint it!!

VoiceFromThePit · 10/02/2026 20:03

Too dark or too large, either get something smaller or lighter coloured.

xOlive · 10/02/2026 20:04

It looks great!

I’d make your banister a lighter colour though 😂 clashes with the dark stairs.

TheGrimSmile · 10/02/2026 20:14

It looks good. Not too big and the colour is nice.

BewleyBear · 10/02/2026 20:44

There’s a formula for working out the ceiling light size apparently, based on the size of the room.
