I need to finish off this room. I need lighting and a mirror. Where would you put the mirror? The navy wall or the other cream wall? Also what kind of light shade do you think I should use. Lighting is NOT my forte. Help me please 🙏

The mirror is best not going opposite the darkest wall, you ideally want it opposite the window to bounce as much light as possible. If you have it facing the darkest wall, it will bounce darkness back

EchoesOfOurDreams · 31/12/2025 13:58

I'm not sure about the lighting but I would put the mirror on the cream wall as it looks quite bare at the moment. I don't think anything needs to go on the navy wall as that will take the focus away from the TV.

Yes I’m veering towards this, it will be facing the window then so will bounce the light around more I imagine?

I wouldn't put a mirror in a living room at all personally. Sorry, I know that's not the input you're looking for!

Mulledjuice · 31/12/2025 14:00

Mirror opposite window.
Art above TV
A large area rug
Some plants
At least one other side light
Some books

dudsville · 31/12/2025 14:00

I don't know, but I love your navey wall and think it would be nice to have another wall of that.

You need ceiling lights, a rug and to mount the tv to the wall. You absolutely do not need a mirror.

Kitchenbattle · 31/12/2025 14:07

Lighting ideas…any of these?

I agree
I also wouldn’t put a shade up I’d look for an actual light that I liked and put that up .

What do you mean an actual light? Sorry I’m being stupid? Also why no mirror?

I wouldn’t put a mirror opposite a window that other people can see into. Fine if it were overlooking your own garden / fields.

If you put it on the wall
opposite the TV, you’ll get the reflection of the overhead light in it. If you put it over the TV it’ll be too high to see anything in it. So, no mirror.

You need much much bigger wall coverings, be it pictures or plants or shelving.

Your only source of light is the one bulb in the middle of the ceiling. That’s not enough: you need floor lamps or side lamps on a side table, perhaps next to the single armchair.

You need a rug that’s long to cover all of the middle of the floor and be tucked under the feet of all three sofas.

You need plants.

Depending on how low your ceiling is, I’d have a dark wooden shade to match the flooring.

I’d put a large mirror on the wall opposite the window to help bounce light around. I’d also put a floating shelf on the Tv wall either one that’s full length or 2 either side of the TV. Again in the same wood as the floor.

For a rug, this one from Next would go with the wooden floor, light sofa and navy wall. I’ve got it and it’s very good quality.

no mirror. instead, have lots of pictures, e.g. a gallery wall or a grouping of 4 in identical frames. you can buy posters and frame them up nicely. and don't hang them too high.

also a rug. that is v important.

I have two lamps in the room. Beside the couch and beside the armchair on the cream wall.
plants I could do, might put one beside the tv in the corner.
the rug is being looked for daily…I’m so fussy 😂

An actual light fixture for example

look at Dunelm for rugs , they are excellent at reasonable prices

Oooh I see…ok thank you. Would I need an electrician to install that type?

@Kitchenbattle my husband does ours but I suppose if you don’t have anyone electrically minded you may have to .

Ah ok my dad could do it I guess if it doesn’t need a cerified electrician as such. Not dps forte at all 😂

How about crystal wall lights as an option on the cream wall, maybe either side of the mirror? I would definitely NOT have a ceiling light (or at least not one you actually use). They are the harshest, most unflattering lights ever!

LibertyLily · 31/12/2025 15:52

When we had a similarly laid out room we put a (huge, 9' long) mirror on the wall opposite the windows to bounce additional light around. However, our room overlooked our very rural deep front garden, with no passers-by able to see in as the room/garden were above street level, so I can see why it may not be such a good idea in your situation @Kitchenbattle.

I'm with you on not wanting to wall mount the TV as I'm not a fan of that. Yours does seem a bit low, ours is on a vintage sideboard which is the perfect height for viewing. There are online guides which help with positioning TVs for optimal viewing and I researched this thoroughly before committing to purchasing the sideboard!

An area rug will look great once you manage to find something you love - it takes time if you're not prepared to settle for something as a space filler. I looked for ages for most of ours - apart from a splurge at Liberty with an inheritance, the best ones I've found have been antique/vintage ones on eBay. Dunelm is a good shout though, but I'd be prepared to wait for the right one.

Art, books, more lamps etc will soften and personalise the space. I agree with regards to the overhead light - we rarely use ours (except in the kitchen and bathroom/cloaks), preferring lots of lamps, but a statement light fitting (which could be on a dimmer) looks far better than a shade in most situations, imo.

Overall, if it was my room, I'd want to inject more colour, but specifically more pattern into your lovely room as at the moment that seems to be what's missing.
