Help me with this decision-living Room

I need to finish off this room. I need lighting and a mirror. Where would you put the mirror? The navy wall or the other cream wall? Also what kind of light shade do you think I should use. Lighting is NOT my forte. Help me please 🙏

Mirror would look great above armchair opposite window.

MadisonMarieParksValetta · 31/12/2025 16:24

Send the pics to chatgpt and ask it to show some options. It's really good!

So I think what the room needs is a bit of softening.

If you're going to put a ceiling fixture, I'd go for something that's going to give you some warm, cosy light - something like this
https://www.lamp24.co.uk/products/elysia-pendant-light?fec_currency_code=GBP&variant=19262663&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23325245656&gbraid=0AAAAA-9fnnE_iBb6bWrcm7g-TxhX_r5-b&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpeix053okQMVcotQBh0nyx5jEAQYASABEgJIEPD_BwE

I do like the rug you posted, but it's very grey, which is going to give you a pretty monotone feeling room. I'd think about one more along these lines
https://www.rugvista.co.uk/p/monet-200x300-cm-multicolor-large-rug-RVD19338
Ikea also has pretty good quality rugs at good prices.

Then a mirror over the chair, as @PeonyPatch suggested, and you'll have a lovely room.

I would put a mirror above the sofa on the right hand side , if getting light fitting changed I’d use an electrician.
agree with trying chat gpt

I think it’s gorgeous. And I love your sofas, they look
so comfy and the type you could sink into and stay in forever haha

I don't know, but I love your navey wall and think it would be nice to have another wall of that.

Same !

I was going to say the opposite! Paint the black wall a lighter colour! 🤣

Definitely some plants OP. What types of light do you like? It’s a fairly neutral room, which will work with most light shades I would have thought.

BoarBrush · 31/12/2025 16:54

Just get a mirrored shade a la a disco ball, two birds and all that. J/k I do Not condone disco balls.

I actually really like that squint navy one you posted. My son plays football in the living room and mine looks like that daily anyway, save me fixing it 😁

Ketzele · 31/12/2025 17:00

I'm personally not a fan of The Big Light and only use mine very occasionally. I would be looking at wall lights and floor lamps to make the room softer and cosier. Many wall lights are now rechargeable or plug into a socket, so you don't need an electrician. (If Pooky is beyond your budget, try Habitat or Made.) I's a good opportunity to introduce some colour, maybe a rusty red. Dunelm do wall lights and floor lights in untreated wood tgat you can paint yourself.

For your overhead light, I would go for something white and sculptural, maybe a pleated paper shade or something like the Ikea Krusning (£12!) or a simple Gullsudare (£2!). I can't quite say why, but it's something about having a point of interest without disrupting tge flow of the room.

I like your wooden floor. I reckon a big jute rug would look good - I got one from Dunelm that looks great and was cheap.

MimiSunshine · 31/12/2025 17:15

You need a giant rug. Ideally one that can go under at least 2 of your sofas / chair.
if you get one that creates an island in the middle of the room it’ll make it feel small. Have a look in carpet shops, they often sell off cuts of carpet that have been made into rugs or actual rugs much cheaper then regular shops.

i would also swapped the art for something much bigger, on both walls have something that fills the walls as at the moment it feels bare.

GreywackeJ · 31/12/2025 17:31

Ceiling lights are never good. I’d have a skinny console table behind a sofa with lamps on it.

LibertyLily · 31/12/2025 17:36

Another vote for Pooky (who have a sale of up to 70% off selected items till 17th Jan). We have numerous Pooky lamps and shades dotted about, plus three of their brass Sisi light fittings in our kitchen. Some have been fortuitous eBay finds.

But we also have a lovely ceiling shade from Dunelm that I found in store reduced to under £4 as it was a customer return! They sell brass/chrome ceiling roses/bulb holders with retro style flex in a variety of interesting colours too for use with shades. We have a couple - £15 each iirc.

Overall, I prefer lamps (our living room has five!) and wall lights, but some people like the option of an overhead light.

Rugs definitely need to be as large as possible as @MimiSunshine says. In our 15' x 13'6 room we have one that is 13' x 10'. If anything, it's a bit too large but was bought for our last-but-one house that had bigger rooms. As it's an antique Persian in very unusual colours, we're rather attached to it and would find somewhere for it wherever we move to.

I love the light linked by @user23442721 and some of those Rockett St George mirrors @OverlyFragrant suggested are lovely. We actually have a pair of elongated oval ones with birds that are very similar...reminds me I need to find somewhere to hang them 😉

Parsleyforme · 31/12/2025 18:52

I would get a bigger picture for above the sofa, it’s too small and a strange height. Also go as big as possible with the mirror (Ikea if you have to) otherwise it will also look a bit off. People always put tiny things on their wall, bigger is almost always better. Aside from that it’s a lovely room

BeenChangedForGood · 31/12/2025 19:45

Nice room @Kitchenbattle ☺️ have you looked at La Redoute for rugs? I have some fab larger rugs from there ☺️

Lighting ideas…any of these?

Top two navy ones

I like the tv not on the wall

yes
plants
books

mirror opposite window but I think you’d need a shelf under it - I’m thinking i would odd otherwise - like you’ve taken fire place out

JillMW · 31/12/2025 19:52

I don’t think a mirror would work in that room. I would focus on art work. The picture looks lost on that wall and a tad too high.
I would move the tv if you can, that wall is very dark and flat with the dark tv. It might look less draining with some prints in metal frames or a very large painting.

Imo - and it might not be the reason why @Kitchenbattle did it - some people choose to paint the wall behind their TV in a dark colour in order for the TV to 'disappear'. Personally I think that's a good reason as it makes the TV less dominant.

Yes I like tv to disappear - I also don’t mind them low - that’s how we used to watch ‘em

😍😍

Unfortunately there is no where else to put the tv.

I would opt for a large art deco type mirror opposite the window and a large piece of colourful artwork above the tv

Yes I know - I just think mirrors can look odd on their own although just realised I have one over sofa and it looks fine (no mantelpiece)
