I need to finish off this room. I need lighting and a mirror. Where would you put the mirror? The navy wall or the other cream wall? Also what kind of light shade do you think I should use. Lighting is NOT my forte. Help me please 🙏

Yes I like tv to disappear - I also don’t mind them low - that’s how we used to watch ‘em

😍😍

This is one of the main reasons yes, it’s almost hidden when off but framed when on.

Yes clever with the wall dark to conceal

Pearlyb · 31/12/2025 20:58

A rug (though I gather you're already painstakingly on this lol)

A big plant - Swiss cheese would be lovely! Other smaller plants too. They really do make a space cosy

Some floor lamps (maybe one that points downwards to the arm chair)?

Shelves of some sort with plants, books, few ornaments (maybe on the right hand side of the TV, or left of the arm chair)

Curtains! These don't need to be heavy or with crazy patterns. Just a layer of light floor length panels could do if you're not a massive fan

One of those big baskets for blankets and pillows

Coffee table

Goldpanther · 31/12/2025 21:27

I would swap the TV to the other side of the room and have the sofa against the navy wall. Will look much more inviting when you enter the room.

I'd then have a nice big mirror (or several) hanging behind the sofa on the navy wall.

I like the floorboards and don't think you need a rug, my preference would be for some floor to ceiling curtains to frame the window in a nice dark colour, maybe a taffeta fabric (purely decorative, not functional!)

I’m not a big curtain fan, we have electric blinds there so that’s enough for me.
there’s a basket in the corner for blankets 🙌

I know it looks like there’s space for a coffee table but I just didn’t want the room to be overtaken and to have to walk around everything. We use a nest of tables.

Fair enough! :)

Try this firm re the rug. I'd have more indirect lighting. Wall lights, floor lamp.

I can't find a focal point in the room which makes it a bit of a head scratcher

Yea there really isn’t one, unless you consider the tv the focal point. Theres no fireplace so it’s just a room really. 🤣

If you can't find a rug go to a carpet shop. Go through all the carpet sample books, find a pattern you love. Ask them to order an offcut of X Size and have it bound as a rug for you. Our carpet shop does this. Best to ask in advance.

I hear what you're saying...even though I'm a massive fan of curtains (I adore fabric/pattern and try to cram as much as possible into any room scheme!) we actually didn't have any window treatments in the living room of our last house. Sometimes it's just not necessary/doesn't work.

Imo your room needs an injection of pattern somewhere @Kitchenbattle - the rug when found will hopefully bring this, but more (large) art and some additional interesting cushions would help enormously.

What our room lacked in patterned fabric at the windows was compensated for by a densely patterned rug, a few colourful pieces of art and an abundance of cushions in loads of different designs/colours.

trickyex · 31/12/2025 22:55

I think the room might feel better if you flipped the layout, ie have the TV on the wall with the door, have the two sofas facing each other so one remains where it is and the other sits in the window. So you dont see the TV from the door.
Put your armchair where the TV is now.
The navy is smart but very high contrast to the other walls. And not needed if you move the TV.
I think a jute or sisal type rug would make it feel much cosier too, but perhaps a bit too rustic for your taste OP?
A large fabric or paper ceiling fitting would work well. I would avoid black shades or glass, too harsh in this space IMO.

You have a point moving the TV. I just keep moving the furniture until it works. I'd put a big piece of furniture against the navy wall I think.

Kitchenbattle · 31/12/2025 23:12

im not sold on moving the tv to the other wall with the door as that is where the radiator is and it would look strange imo.

I think the room needs more colour and warmth. All the bits are in place, but it looks rather flat and chilly. Warm lighting from table and standard lamps, don’t use the overhead light, and some warmer colours in cushions and the eventual rug — maybe warm tans and oatmeals. Larger wall art hung at the right height. I hate to say it, but I think the dark wall is the wrong colour. It would be better in F and B Inchyra Blue, which is a deep grey-blue which will still hide the tv but be less cold.

I found that colour too blue green tbh, I wanted it deep dark navy. I have two lamps in the room and I will try to get more blue in the rug if I can. But I’m not a major bright colour lover so the tan would throw me off tbh.
i can see what you say about it looking cold but it really doesn’t feel it in person.

I think with all 3 seats pushed against the walls and forming a square it feels a bit formal and uninviting. If you angle the armchairs towards the big sofa it'd look more conversational as a setup.

In our living room we have a bookshelf that the TV sits on plus an armchair alongside it at an angle pointing towards the larger sofa - that's the seat our guests tend to pick to sit on as it looks most inviting. It also takes some of the focus off the TV.

Just a suggestion! Ps love the first lamp that was linked with the wood effect. I also don't feel a mirror is needed, just some more artwork and a rug

no I hate mounted tvs, I like it on the table. Why no mirror?

I too hate wall mounted TVs. So naff. I’d definitely put a large mirror on the cream wall opposite the window.

Oooh I see…ok thank you. Would I need an electrician to install that type?

Probably. Most pendant lights incorporate the junction box into the rose (rose = the plastic dome on the ceiling) and you'll need to instead move the junction box above the ceiling and have a piece of twin-and-earth come down through a hole for the fitting. A sparky can do that for you and install the new fitting. When you want to replace the new fitting in years to come, you can do it yourself and have a lot more flexibility about what kind of fitting you want, because you can have any kind including pendant if the junction box is above the ceiling.

I opted for a cluster of spotlights because I can direct the light to where I want it. If I could afford a rewire, replaster, and redecorate, I'd add wall lights as well. Having lights in places other than the middle of the ceiling improves how the room feels and how well you can use it more than any other feature.

comeondover · 01/01/2026 02:49

@selffellatingouroborosofhate you can get wall lights now that you just stick on the wall, no fitting necessary. They're rechargeable. So they might be listed as stick on or adhesive or rechargeable wall lights

I suppose I have made the room the tv focussed room tbh, in terms of its use it’s mostly used by me and the kids. We have another sun room with couches which is where we tend to sit with guests to converse. This room is used to watch tv.
will keep an eye out for more artwork yes. Thank you.

Does the sofa on the back wall fit into the bay nicely?
That might address the layout as bit, it looks a little awkward as it is. Swap it with the armchair, so that fits on the shorter wall by the door.
And yes I would add softer mid tones to bridge the contrast between the navy and the other walls.
Could you have all the walls dark it ifs just a TV space? Like a cinema room?
I did that in my TV room and it looked great, really cosy.
I also had a neutral sofa and dark floors and added a paler rug, will try to find sth similar to link to.

trickyex · 01/01/2026 09:47

Sorry ignore my suggestion re the sofa, I have just checked the photos again and you only have one sofa.
COuld you try having the sofa on the long wall opposite the window and the two chairs facing it, side by side?
All at right angles to the TV?
The sofa looks so close to the door and not a very relaxing place to sit.
