Has anyone got a dark painted living room?

I really fancy painting my living room and darker colour. Its a large victorian room, north facing, but I'm nervous of winter and darker evenings. Does anyone have a darker living room and if you do, do you regret it?

My paint options are on the picture, goodhome Milltown or Saint Raphael...

Beautiful fireplace. If its between those 2 I like the green better.

Brunocatmon · 05/04/2025 20:17

I love both of your colours. I'm going to do my guest room in a midnight blue

SquidgibleDirigible · 05/04/2025 20:19

We have a NE facing dining/playroom which is painted navy blue, with white woodwork and ceiling. It's gorgeous amd we love it. We have very warm cosy lighting and a bright teal sofa. It's my favourite room.

Thank you, I'm leaning toward the green too! Just need to be brave and do it!

We have a 1930's property so high ceilings. I hate flat painted walls but have black damask wallpaper with white ceilings and coving. We have woodburning stoves in both rooms and tend to have non scented candles lit in the evening. I am quite happy in darker rooms, although it isnt for everyone. The vestibule is a Victorian green colour (without the arsenic), one bedroom has 3 purple walls. Out of your two sample colours I prefer the green.

My daughter’s living room is navy blue. It is a high ceiling Edinburgh tenement flat and it looks amazing.

I've a north facing living room, painted in f&b off black. I love it, makes the room really cosy

EasternStandard · 05/04/2025 21:21

I prefer the green too, feels calmer

Yes, and it works amazingly!

I've got a dark blue living room (Dulux heritage Oxford blue if I remember right). North facing. I love it, I have dark teal velvet curtains and in the evenings I draw them and it makes the whole room snug.
In the mornings I do find it a bit cold / dark feeling but I usually sit in the south facing kitchen - diner instead for my morning coffee!

I hated mine, I felt it was just too dark and depressing especially in winter. I love them in other people's houses but they're not for me.

My lounge is painted the top colour and the kitchen the bottom! Lounge is just the wall with the fireplace, both are cosy.

Thanks everyone.

I think I'm going to go for just the fireplace wall in the green and an off white round the rest. Just too worried about it not bring bright enough!!

We had crown after show in our previous lounge with a very similar fireplace. This time I have Light Fern which is much lighter but if I was single (!) would have had Valspar Nature Lover which is a lovely deep silvery olive green. I wouldn’t do it in the kitchen but for a snug / TV room those darker shades are fabulous.

I have a north and east facing book lined room, which had dark red walls, rugs, curtains and furniture. I love it, it is so cosy in winter, with a glowing fire and lamps.
I have a dark blue colour drenched inner landing/study upstairs and I am plotting to paint the loo a dark teal.. I'm sold on dark!

I am also now considering redoing my smaller sitting room in the same green as yours, because I like the strong colour of the other room so much and don't find it too dark. This room also has two windows, east and a smaller south window.
I think it is a lovely green and if you did decide to use it, ensuring that you have enough strategically placed lamps should help.
I would say that using silk paint for that slight sheen and having pictures, or ornaments, etc, helps break up a dark room.

Sophie Robinson, the interior designer, has hers painted a very dark brown with lots of pops of bright colours. She has photos of it on Instagram.

My lounge is F&B Railings top to bottom and I don’t think I’ll ever change it, I absolutely love it. Everyone comments on how great it looks and how cosy it is in my lounge.

Tulipvase · 06/04/2025 16:21

We have Valspar victorian dusk in our low ceiling Victorian cottage living room. We like dark and cosy though. I’m tempted to go for a charcoal/black colour next.

Wakemeupbe4yougogo · 06/04/2025 16:22

We've gone for Prussian (dark green/blue) in our dining room with burnt orange as the accent colour and I'm now really cross I didn't use it in the living room instead as it's such a lovely colour palette. Our dining room only gets the evening sun but it's warmed the room up whatever the time of day.

Mikart · 06/04/2025 16:28

We've just moved and the living room is card room green. I hate it.

Frumpyandfrustrated · 06/04/2025 16:39

We have a very dark blue and i love it BUT when the children dent or mark it (as they do) it somehow seems much more noticeable than it did on the horrible yellow it was when we moved in or on the magnolia on the hall. So I wouldn't do it again if your children are younger or in a high traffic area. Looks stunning though (helps that we have high ceilings I think)

GeorgianaM · 06/04/2025 16:43

Personally I hate dark walls and rooms.

I'd never have dark blue and prefer the green out of your two choices -

Same here and I love it.
