How often do you decorate your home?

Inspired by another thread I've realised this is the longest I've lived in one house (12 years). The kitchen was painted 8 years ago, lounge maybe 6, bedrooms 7, 8 and 3 years ago. Lots of it needs doing again. How frequently do you repaint rooms in your house? Do you do it all at once or bit by bit?

I should add I previous houses we moved in, did them up room by room and moved within 3 years so nothing ever really needed doing again. I think maybe I've lived here so long I can't see how bad some if it looks.

Similar situation to you, OP. We've lived in our house for 10 years and have bit by bit decorated every room and had new kitchen and 2 new bathrooms in that time. The bits we did first are looking like they need re-doing.

SackChute · 02/03/2025 17:27

As little as possible. We will have lived here 9 years this summer, and every room has been done once, the living room has been done twice. The hallway definitely needs redoing.
Over the road have lived here 6 years and they were painting their living room for the 3rd time this weekend.
I’m far too knackered for that malarkey I’m afraid.

GOODCAT · 02/03/2025 17:29

In practice it has been roughly 10 years for us between painting and repainting.

Cakeandcheeseforever · 02/03/2025 17:30

I moved into my house three years ago and have done every room but one since, mostly myself. Some bits need redoing already as I forgot to use wipe clean paint. Don’t anticipate ever being able to stop as have to do it around work and small kids!

Octavia64 · 02/03/2025 17:38

Moved in 18 months ago.

Still got rooms to do.

Previous house was there 12 years and didn't do most of it (largely because it would have meant redoing in a different colour virtually the whole house as we couldn't match it)

TheOpalReader · 02/03/2025 17:44

Every 5 years or so, or when paint/wallpaper looks tired. I'm just about to do some rooms in my house that were last done about 6 years ago and only because the wallpaper has started to come loose in the corners. My friend does hers every 18 months, full house top to bottom, madness.

Well I feel reassured that I'm not the only one who is ignoring the decorating. Slightly shocked at the people doing it every 18 months.

Slightly embarrassed that we've been about 12 years since we last decorated. We had the whole house done professionally in a fairly neutral colour and just beginning to get it all done again.

Despite having DC we don't seem to be particularly hard on the paintwork. There are some scuffs and the stairs are definitely ready to be done but I wouldn't say it was too bad on the whole.

I hate decorating, as does DH, and we don't get any pleasure or satisfaction from doing it.

On the other hand we have neighbours that seem to be permanently painting and as soon as they've finished a room they move on to the next and the next. I'm fairly sure that they've done their front room around six times since we've lived next to them.

Maitri108 · 02/03/2025 20:26

Not often. The kitchen was last painted about six years ago and I'm redoing it this year. The rest is fine.

TheChosenTwo · 02/03/2025 20:28

Every year we decorate one area/section or room. just keeps everything looking fairly looked after.

Songbird54321 · 02/03/2025 20:32

We lived in our last house for 6 years, every room was done once apart from our daughters as we did it when she was a baby and then let her have input inti redecorating when she got her 'big girl' room.
We've just moved into our new house and I don't intend to repaint anything this year. The kids rooms will be done first to more their tastes but it’s all pretty neutral and clean and was clearly done professionally so until we'd only butcher it trying to redo it ourselves. I absolutely loathe redecorating so I always get a proper decorator in. Costs a bomb now so won’t be happening often.

Painting and decorating every 5 years or sooner if required / fancy it.
Bathrooms, kitchens, flooring 10 year lifespan then replace.

WhereTheSpiritMeetsTheBones · 02/03/2025 20:39

Moved in a year ago and still haven't decorated anything as i can't afford it yet, lots of reno work needs doing first and the house desperately needs decorating 😅 having grown up in a family which redecorated constantly just on a whim it's taking a lot of patience to adjust!

Leafyleaferson · 02/03/2025 21:55

I've redecorated every room in our house several times since 2020.

I enjoy painting and enjoy giving rooms a nice refresh. Just spent the weekend redoing hall, stairs and landing. Our bedroom will be next which was last done 3 years ago.

MulberryPeony · 09/03/2025 08:26

Had our hall repainted last year but that was the second time in 18 years so not very frequently. One touch up in between. A bit disappointed with it to be honest. Our old decorator died and the new one wanted to use different paint brand which is not proving to be as hard wearing on the skirting. At least I’ll be able to touch that up myself but still expected a better longevity!

Bathrooms still look great despite only using silk paint not bathroom specific and I’ll be updating with a different colour this year. A bit of regrouting in the shower and it’ll be good for a while yet too.

Bedrooms ditto just a touch up. Sons room was painted before he was born and he’s 11 now and we still love it.

Carpets throughout need replacing due to wear and tear. We’ve had our moneys worth.

Kitchen was replaced during lockdown and some of the hastily done plaster work is showing now. Should be just a sand back and filler job to make good.

You refit kitchen and bathroom every 10 years?

crossstitchingnana · 09/03/2025 08:32

I do mine every 5 years or so, but only if they need it. Just finished a bedroom that hadn't been touched for 10 years. It was rank, but did not know that due to furniture and pictures etc. covering it up!!

Goinggold · 09/03/2025 08:34

Did it when I moved in 10 years ago and just getting around to redoing it now. I bought paint to do it during lockdowns but haven't managed it yet!

SnoopysHoose · 09/03/2025 08:35

Moved in two years ago and everything has now been done, have repainted one bedroom, have just completed a full hall renovation; new stairs, woodwork, decor. The rooms that were done two years ago will get a fresh coat this summer.

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 09/03/2025 08:39

We moved in 5 years ago, the house had been repainted throughout in magnolia.

We've redone the kids' bedrooms and that's it.

We're going to make a start on each room this year.

ExtraDecluttering · 09/03/2025 08:41

We moved here 23 years ago, we did most of the house in the first year, but there were a couple of rooms that never got done and babies came along, life was busy, we have done the whole house now but the last couple of rooms were only in the last couple of years. Some of the ones we did originally could do with re-doing now (bedrooms) but they are small and it’s really hard moving and working round the furniture - if you pushed it into the middle you would have to squeeze round the outsides and there is no space in other rooms to move it to unless we get it downstairs, which is also making it a huge job replacing carpets. We have always chosen plain, fairly neutral walls and carpets so they don’t really date and haven’t too many scuffs etc.

We did the bathroom when we moved in and it could do with replacing now, the bath/toilet/sink are fine but flooring, tiles etc are dated and worn now. The kitchen had been done recently when we moved in and we gutted it about 4 years ago and re-fitted, so that was after about 20 years.

pudha · 09/03/2025 08:57

We live in a new build and it's taken us 5 years to do every room. Our decorator very specifically said we'd be good for 8 years lol. Our hallway will need doing again (the woodwork desperately so), but I'm really hoping the rest will last for a while, it's cost a fortune doing it all. We recently refreshed our bedroom and that alone cost £1500.

Yup 👍

MajorCarolDanvers · 09/03/2025 12:52

moved into our home 13 yrs ago.

it was a show home so top end decoration. We haven’t changed anything so far. But a couple of areas are starting to look like they need freshening up.
