Advice please. Does this rug look stupid? Do I need a bigger one?

Ordered a rug, it was the only one I could find for a reasonable price. I didn’t realise there were so many ways to position a rug and that ideally the front of the sofas should sit on the rug. Does this look stupid? Do I need to find a bigger one? Should I just position the rug so that none of the sofa legs are on it? Excuse the animals …

I think one of the reasons it looks a bit odd is because it's only a tiny bit wider than the width of the sofa, so it looks slightly off.

However, I can see you've got another sofa there too, so even a wider rug would look a bit strange. Rugs tend to look best when they are big and all the furniture sits on the rug. It zones the space and makes the room look bigger. Or big enough so the front legs of all the furniture are on the rug. But not some bits of furniture on it, and others off. That makes it feel a bit unbalanced.

I think as others have said, a coffee table or ottoman would really help. Or pull the rug a bit closer to the hearth. But not so close that it's touching the hearth as that also looks a bit weird. There's an art to rug placement! I learned this the hard (and expensive!) way.

That was just after I put the rug down, he decided I had supplied adequate cat furniture and was very happy!

I think you need one thats a bit longer, the width seems fine. I didn't think it looked like a bath towel until I read a PP, but now that's all I can see.

I think it’s better not under the sofa legs.

Or black cats.

Because traditionally rugs are there to keep your feet warm over a hard floor. Your feet meet the floor at the foot of the sofa so the rug would be there to cushion your feet. However, these days they are often used for decoration or texture or over a carpet so that guidance doesn’t t really matter.

I would just make sure the rug either has the same amount of space all around it (not ideal) or that it is touching the mantel and under the sofa. Ideally rugs should be just under furniture ☺️

It’s a little too small. There should be some rug on either side of the sofa and it should be tucked under the legs. I’d keep it away from the fire or it’s going to get ruined, particularly a light coloured rug,

This is an apartment I’ve just furnished for STR, there is a fireplace just out of shot bottom right corner, but it has a separate hearth rug.
