Advice please. Does this rug look stupid? Do I need a bigger one?

Ordered a rug, it was the only one I could find for a reasonable price. I didn’t realise there were so many ways to position a rug and that ideally the front of the sofas should sit on the rug. Does this look stupid? Do I need to find a bigger one? Should I just position the rug so that none of the sofa legs are on it? Excuse the animals …
thanks

yeah it’s way to small you need another one

Sorry, I'm going against the grain, but IMO it does look too small for the room. Is there other furniture or just that 1 sofa on the right of the pic?
Could you use it next to bed instead if you might get another or in another room? I'm also amazed at the colour, considering you have black cats 😆
If you are happy with it though, that is all that matters.
The last I went to an ikea shop, they had lots of rugs and other items discounted in a specific area. I assume they were returns, so that might be an option, IF you did want to change it.

There’s a corner sofa on the back wall, I was struggling to find a rug that would look right due to the shape of the room and the hearth

What? Why? I don’t understand.

Rugs are not carpets. They are supposed to have space around them. I didn’t understand the problem in the OPs first post and I am mystified by the idea that it’s ‘way’ too small. If it were only a few centimetres wider it would go from the hearth to under the sofa, which would be too big. I’m confused. I think I must live in a totally different visual universe.

OP, it’s fine.

Please don't leave hot drinks by your cat

The drink wasn’t hot, I put it down for a second to take a photo. Pretty sure the log burner that he’s lead asleep right next to is hotter than the cup of tea

What would you go for?

Something cat-colour. Everything I have seems to get covered in cat hairs.

DCats love the sheepskin rug. It's on a leather beanbag and they curl up on it. Seems a shame to move them.

Yeah, something I should’ve considered. May have to sell and buy another.

My style is not for everyone think hippy lol i like colour.
I have a multi colour rug a bit of funk brightens up any room.

K0OLA1D · 03/12/2024 20:23

The mug of tea and the cats sprawled next to it just gave me a wee eye twitch 🤣

I'd start it from the fire too

KirstenBlest · 03/12/2024 20:24

It looks fine @Benjmais , and it only vaguely looks like a bath sheet.
Just get another when you see one.

I just put up with the hairs otherwise I'd be living with drab decor.

That’s a good shout. Do you think it will look ok if the rug is not under the sofa legs and I get a coffee table to go on top?

Get a glass coffee table.
It’ll look fine that way and give your room the appearance of being less crowded.
Plus a little glass cleaner is all you need.
Best purchase I ever made.

Offcom · 03/12/2024 20:32

I deliberately chose a smaller rug this time because the one I had previously ended up getting a tear under the sofa leg.

It looks really cosy for the winter, especially with a cat stretched out on it

Add some more furniture to make it look less crowded? Now I’m really baffled.

Rug or cat?

soupfiend · 03/12/2024 20:44

I dont have an opinion on the rug.

I do have an opinion on tea in a precarious position near a feline

You dont need a coffee table either, side tables are far preferred, coffee tables are inconvenient.

KirstenBlest · 03/12/2024 20:49

I wouldn't get a glass coffee table. If you do, get a glass cloth (Home Bargains or similar). You just need somewhere to rest cups and the remote control.

ARainyNightInSoho · 03/12/2024 20:49

Totally agree about coffee tables. I find it really weird to fill up every space in a room. Coffee tables mean everyone having to squeeze past furniture when they cross the room and they are hardly ever at a convenient arms length distance to put down your cup anyway. Side tables are far more practical and leave some space in the middle of the room to show off your rug, nice floorboards or just to be able to walk around!

greengreyblue · 03/12/2024 20:53

I think a coffee table is essential. Otherwise you end up with a space for what? Use it for purpose- to create a cosy space to sit around with drinks and candles . It’s a focal point. Otherwise it’s a corridor.

This

Not to mention a practical issue about how people drink drinks. So you have your drink, about 3 foot in front of you, lower than you are sitting

You lean forward to take your drink, take some drink, lean forward again to put it down. Unless you sit with your drink on your lap in your hand which I dont want to do. So crushing my stomach down every time I want a swig of tea or wine or something. same with nibbles, got to lean forward and down everytime I want a crisp or nut. Not practical

I need my drinks and snacks in easy access positions.

greengreyblue · 03/12/2024 20:57

I have a coffee table side tables with lamps .

K0OLA1D · 03/12/2024 20:59

You don't need a huge coffee table. We have a tall round table in front of ours. It moves easy and doesn't leave feet marks on the rug as its light. I hated our old, heavy, low rectangular one

Advice please. Does this rug look stupid? Do I need a bigger one?

This is a great coffee table. Small and movable. I find the large rectangular ones stuck in the middle of the room very dated and impractical.

Thanks! It was 50 quid from an antique village near us and turns out it's about 100 years old and Moroccan!
