Double bed advice for tall people

I currently have a wooden double bed which is fine just for me, I’m pretty short but occasionally my feet end up on the bars at the bottom. I have just started seeing lovely man who is 6ft3 and would eventually like him to stay over but I’m worried he won’t fit in my bed. I can’t really fit anything bigger than a double in my bedroom. My bed also sits under a window so I don’t really want a bed with a tall headboard. So am I better off with a divan bed? I need some kind of storage as my room is so small so possibly a lift up divan bed or one with drawers. Can anyone recommend a bed that’s not hugely expensive but sturdy? Has anyone got a bed with bars at the bottom and their tall dh/dp manages ok? 😬

A bed without bars works best. Also a super king but can see you don’t have room. My DH is a bit shorter at just over 6 foot and we have a super king with no bars. When we go away we look at the pictures to make sure there’s no bars at the end and choose somewhere with at least a king size bed as he just doesn’t fit in a double well.

Rowgtfc72 · 07/06/2024 20:21

Dh is 6ft 6. He likes a footboard. We have a king and bugger all else in the room.
Dd is just over 6ft in a single with a footboard and she's squished.
Apparently doubles are 6ft long, Kings 6ft 6.
If he doesn't mind his feet overhanging or he sleeps on his side he'll be fine with a double.

DH is 6ft 4 and until about 4 years ago we slept in a double bed with a foot board. Now changed it for a king-size divan. DH has never claimed about either bed being too short.

Lovemusic82 · 07/06/2024 21:06

I don’t think I would fit a king, I already have to squeeze around the double and keep walking into the wooden frame. So I think it will need to be a double with no board/bars at the bottom 😬. If I did go up to king size I would also have to buy a new mattress and bedding.

That’s good. Maybe I am over thinking it. He has a king at his house which is why I’m worrying a little.

Singles and doubles are 6'2" long. Kinds and super kings are 6'6" long. Emperor can vary but are often 7 feet long

I was astonished, but my experience with Crazy Price Beds (I know!) has been excellent. Perfectly good bed for £179 (frame only) and very good customer service from a woman called Sally, who might or might not be the owner. I bought the Harpenden (Victorian style metal) bed and that's been great.

I will get a tape measure out. I currently have a chest of drawers at the end of the bed and can’t really move them unless I reduce my clothing down (which isn’t going to happen) 🤣

We got a wooden kingsize bed from IKEA with 4 massive drawers in it. The built in airing cupboard has turned into a wardrobe and we have bedside tables. Dh has to do the bedside shuffle!

Dodgy drawing of room lay out….

Underbed storage would give you space to fit in a king.

Possibly. I could then get rid of the chest of drawers at the bottom of the bed.

He will probably sleep diagonally and push you out not that I find this annoying

Lovemusic82 · 07/06/2024 21:37

That’s a possibility.

Most beds seem to have huge headboards and frames taking up room that I haven’t got.

I bought an ottoman bed from Dusk for DS 19 who is 6’3”. It has a low head board and fits under his window. It’s a 4’6” double and has occasionally accommodated him and at least one of his rugby playing friends.
I think it cost between £200-300. You have to assemble it but it was straightforward. It is very sturdy.

NotMeNoNo · 07/06/2024 21:46

DH is 6ft 6, his feet still stick over the end of a king-size bed. Don't go too narrow either as tall people need more room for elbows too.

Get Laid beds are great by the way, we have one of the space saver beds as our bedroom is small.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/06/2024 22:05

DH is 6'2", DS is 6'3". Both prefer beds without footboards so they can hang their feet over the end. We spend a lot of time squinting at photos of holiday cottages.

Another thought.
This is a new man. What sort of bed do you want?
There's time for you to choose a bed together if he becomes a regular man!

I want comfort. I think I need a new mattress so how’s probably a good time to get a new bed and to consider a king size (if it will fit). There is now rush, I would like for him to be able to stay at mine because it’s not possible that I can stay at his very often. I am not used to sharing my bed, have been single a loooong time, so sharing with someone who’s over 6ft and not exactly skinning is going to be tough in my current bed.

I may ace to look at buying a 2nd hand bed in order to be able to afford a good mattress.

Try ikea. Beds and mattresses are reasonable. We certainly didn't pay the earth for them.
Dh also tall and not skinny. Doesnt really matter when your bloke likes to starfish.
Got to say, I would miss my king. I don't miss my extra furniture, just have to be more organised.
Good luck with the search!

Mossstitch · 08/06/2024 19:46

If you do away with the headboard and footboard that saves a few inches and gives you enough room for a longer king-sized divan (Tall woman here who cannot stand a footboard on a bed). I have one without either but with four drawers underneath so you wouldn't need the set of drawers at the foot of the bed.
