I'm just wondering what people think of this style now? I love it ( it's my back room) but not sure whether it would be considered really dated now.

Would help if I posted a picture

Personally I think it's quite dated and not my taste but it looks nice and cozy.

As long as you love your own home no one else matters.

TobarnanGealt · 24/03/2024 17:33

From what is visible in the image, it looks like a perfectly pleasant room, but I wouldn't have said it was aiming at any particular 'style'?

The only thing that strikes me as anomalous (though not exactly 'dated') is the combination of the geometric design of the rug/kilim with the florals of the curtains and the cushion. I have a similarly patterned kilim in more faded rose and creams, but it's the only pattern in the room.

letstrythis · 24/03/2024 17:33

It looks classic, I don't think it can go out of fashion.

43ontherocksporfavor · 24/03/2024 17:34

Looks lovely. Classic and stylish doesn’t go out of style.

SoupDragon · 24/03/2024 17:34

I like it. It looks homely and shows personality. Far better than the bland expanses of grey and gloss white you see nowadays.

it's a room that has things in it because they are loved, not because they are in fashion.

cartreffi · 24/03/2024 17:37

@TobarnanGealt interesting you think this, and appreciate your view! I think my style is not having matching patterns, and enjoying mismatch. I also think I don't have a particular style but I like lots of things and it gets confusing.

A while ago everyone loved navy blue & now they’re all raving about sage green, not because their tastes have all changed independently but because fashion.

It does seem a bit daft. Go with what you like.

RichardsGear · 24/03/2024 17:42

I think the industrial type table and benches isn't what I'd expect with that style of room decor, but it doesn't look bad. I like the rug and the green chair.

43ontherocksporfavor · 24/03/2024 17:43

So long as you have what you love and don’t slavishly follow fashions, anything goes.

cartreffi · 24/03/2024 17:47

@RichardsGear I agree, you're right. I have to admit everything in this room is on a budget. The industrial type stools were a necessity and everything else is either Facebook marketplace or auction.

Some of my favourite pieces of furniture have come from FB marketplace. I love a bargain!

Wolfpa · 24/03/2024 17:51

I think it depends on the age of your house, in a modern new build that would look dated and out of place. In a classic cottage it would fit right in.

but as others have said, it’s your home do what makes you happy

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 24/03/2024 17:51

I think the curtains look a bit dull but apart from that looks fine to e. It doesn't matter what other people think anyway, so long as you like it that's all that matters!

Mmmkaay · 24/03/2024 17:53

There are nice bits of the room but for me it doesn't all work together - the curtains look dated and there's too much clutter on /around the fireplace. That said, I love the rug/floor/green chair combo, it's just needs a little bit of curating (and maybe some different curtains!)

I would also paint the wooden surround on the fireplace the same colour as the wall.

Icanttellyouanything · 24/03/2024 17:59

I'd see if I could dye the curtains and paint the fireplace and surround.
Love the chair and the rug.

curlywillow · 24/03/2024 18:03

It only matters whether you like it.

For me the collection of stuff in the fireplace is odd and looks messy. I have lots of old and eclectic stuff in my house but I think you need to edit. That’s what takes old stuff from looking like a shelf in a charity shop to stylish and expensive. But that’s just what I would do. You’re the one living there.

cartreffi · 24/03/2024 18:32

Thank you everyone, that's genuinely really helpful . I will think about painting the wood around the fireplace, at the moment my whole house has wooden bits so I would need to think about painting all of that

Classic, good blend of styles and colours. I like it.

Waitingforgeorge · 25/03/2024 18:33

I like it - especially your rug. Follow trends (we all do to an extent - even those who claim not to) - stick with classics, do whatever makes you feel good when you sit in your room.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/03/2024 18:37

I see a collection of lovely, interesting objects, beautiful colors, and I think everything comes together well. I really like it.

rumbanana · 25/03/2024 19:23

I really like it, but I don't like anything that is too easy to date. I prefer an eclectic assortment of things rather than what is fashionable at any point in time.
I purposefully chose a kitchen that wasn't in fashion when I bought it, and isn't now, still looks nice to me though.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 31/03/2024 00:31

Your room looks really cosy and well loved and a bit bohemian. Really lovely and you have a good eye for matching. Mine needs some warmth added to it. Can you help. Good to have your own style and what you like and you seem to have got some good pieces.

RogueFemale · 31/03/2024 00:46

I like the wood floor and the rug, and the wall colour looks ok. The fireplace I find a bit odd and fussy, - why have a table lamp and a framed picture on the floor?

Curtain and tiger cushion don't seem to go with anything. Wall mounted TV cables look messy.

Sorry, but you did ask. If I were just a random visitor I wouldn't have had an inner critique.... just looks like a 'normal' house, and cosier than ones attempting to be modern.

RosesAndHellebores · 31/03/2024 00:56

I like the rug and the elephant chair.

The empty fireplace looks as though you have bunged a load of junk in it and I'm sorry but I think you have a wide screen tv above the fireplace and its wires are hanging down. That completely flies in the face of the Arts and Crafts/Bohemian image I think you are trying to create.
