Show me your non-grey stair carpets!

I’m planning to redecorate my hallway and staircase and I’m in desperate need of some inspiration.

It’s currently white walls with a grey carpet that hasn’t been touched since I moved in and which I loathe. My instinct would be to go beigey neutral but a) it’s a little boring and I’d like something a bit more interesting, and b) I have a dog so it can’t be too light as I couldn’t bear it looking dirty.

For some reason, I have a rich, plummy red wine colour in my head but I wouldn’t have a clue what paint or wallpaper would go with it. I’m open to any and all suggestions though! It’s a relatively small space with not a huge amount of natural light if that makes a difference.

Do you want a runner or edge to edge?

Joeslaol24 · 07/01/2024 18:36

This carpet is ideal with a dog . Picture doesn’t really do it justice!

I have a sort of aubergine colour on mine. Plummy red wine colour sounds fab. The rest of my hallway is very neutral (plain wood floors and white walls) apart from a huge collection of small mirrors on the wall opposite the stairs.

Also stripes here, hides more marks with kids and dog

Plummy red 😁

We love it. It feels so warm, cosy and welcoming. Had it down for about 10y now. No stains.

Only white fluff shows up badly - what colour is your dog's fur?

Mine is a very forgiving mid blue. I tried taking a photo but the colour didn't look true.
We've got it all through the downstairs and landing - in the living room we've got a Persian rug on it which is mostly rich red with blues and neutrals , dining room we've got yellow with it.

It's over 20 years old and has survived a child and two dogs.

I have this exact carpet and love it.

Edge to edge @PoinsettiaLives, I’ve a feeling the stairs aren’t in great condition and I don’t have the patience to have them replaced/restored 😅

Oh the stripes are fab! They’d be ideal for the dog.

Aubergine sounds absolutely beautiful @BonjourCrisette! I don’t think I want white walls but maybe plainish with some of vintage photos and artwork in antique looking gold frames 🤔

We've got stripes - in blue, grey, soft green and a natural/beige. Hides all sins and only gets hoovered once a week. https://www.crucial-trading.com/product/blue-gold-ws100/

Beautiful colour and looks practically brand new!

I think I’m leaning towards a deeper, more purple leaning red. A sort of vintage, luxe, witchy eclectic mix in my little terraced house ha! I just don’t know how to achieve it and Pinterest isn’t delivering the way it usually does.

Sorry, forgot to say my dog’s coat is a mix of black and golden blond.

We have plummy red, it's not to my taste but it was here when we moved and good quality so it'll be the last thing to get redecorated (so probably never). It shows up dirt/specs of anything very easily. The day after it is vacuumed it looks scruffy and we don't have any pets or wear shoes indoors.

BonjourCrisette · 07/01/2024 19:13

I have a black cat, hence the choice of dark coloured carpet!

@Aparecium That is a really lovely colour.

DappledThings · 07/01/2024 19:15

Stripey, with pink walls and green, white and blue tiles in hall. Photo is from when the pink went on the walls last year and was only one coat on so there is still a bit of tape up and a few white marks

Don’t do red… maybe just us but it showed every dog hair and I couldn’t wait to get rid of it. (It was here when we moved in, could be quality of carpet.)

Aparecium · 07/01/2024 19:27

I think the secret to a striking solid colour carpet that does not show every speck is to choose a carpet with a heathery tone. In other words, not actually a solid colour. Slightly heathery does not show that it is heathery.

I love SnowsFalling's stripes.

Greeksummer · 07/01/2024 19:37

Oh no I didn’t think pet hair would show up badly that sort of colour. I’m an obsessive hooverer though so it wouldn’t necessarily put me off. It’s more that she sneaks up stairs now and with mucky paws so I thought a darker colour would be better.

We chose a heathery tone in our last house - it never looked clean. Paid a fortune for it and truth be told from the day it went down my heart sank. Mind you the dog vomited on it, pissed on it and has bled on it too. Didn't do any of those things before it went down.
New house now - terrace too, I don't want stripes. I'm thinking of creating the drama on the walls and the lighting and letting the carpet take a back seat and be beige.

greenacrylicpaint · 12/01/2024 06:35

ours are red velvet.
lovely when freshly hoovered, but show the dirt quite a bit.

Lottapianos · 12/01/2024 06:38

Watching with interest - I have the same situation OP, minus the dog!

greenacrylicpaint · 12/01/2024 06:50

the wood is off white. wall greyish off white.
love the colour but the velvet shows up dust and hair very quickly.
waiting for a stair hooverbot to be invented
