Husband says no one has curtains these days

My husband talks scathingly about curtains, saying they are 'old fashioned' and 'you won't see them in any interior design magazine'. I think he's absolutely wrong, and likely people are even more likely to have curtains these days, with energy bills being so high. We have roller blinds throughout. It looks rubbish and our heating bills are high.

So who's right, in your opinion?

Has your husband visited many other homes?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/12/2023 18:58

You're right. We have blinds but went to the effort to put curtains up even though it was hard work and we rent because it makes the house so much warmer and cosier

educatingrati · 18/12/2023 19:10

Our love our curtains, they are quilted wool lined and make a massive difference to the room temperature when drawn.

Soontobe60 · 18/12/2023 19:12

I have wooden Venetian blinds at most windows, with added curtains in the bedroom, a fabric Roman blind in the bathroom and floor length curtains at the French doors.
I consider myself to have excellent taste 😂

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 18/12/2023 19:13

Your OH is clueless

I have shutter blinds and curtains ..... the blinds aren't great for keeping it completely black so we have both & the curtains keep it warmer

Exactly that. We even have shutters and curtains thanks to some clever diy work by husband. I hated the starkness of just blinds ( others call it "clean lines") and the moment curtains were there, the room looked so much warmer and dressed

Favouritefruits · 18/12/2023 19:17

I love curtains, if you live in for example an Edwardian house I think blinds look daft, it’s not in keeping with the property! I can’t imagine a nice big bay window with blinds??

bellac11 · 18/12/2023 19:19

I dont like roller blinds, I think they look hefty and clunky

I have voile roman blinds which stay down, which we can sort of see out of but which provide privacy and then curtains over the top with a layer of voile curtains under that, they stay open at the sides but we can draw them if we like

YOu can get double layered curtain poles from Ikea, very clever

Your husband might be right that fewer people use curtains but thats why people are constantly moaning they're cold and heating bills are through the roof

BoobyDazzler · 18/12/2023 19:20

Roller blinds look much worse than curtains imo.

motherofkevinnotperry · 18/12/2023 19:22

Nope, lined Roman blinds. Curtains take up too much room, if they're not the right length they cover radiators and absorb heat. Trap dust etc. I'd want more than a roller blind.

VisionsOfSplendour · 18/12/2023 19:23

Apologies if your husband is blind but what kind of idiot thinks no one has curtains?

Toomuchleopard · 18/12/2023 19:32

I have eyelet curtains in heavy fabrics like velvet. They look modern and warm and cosy. I have a Roman blind in my bedroom and it looks crap when it is pulled down. I wish I had curtains!

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 18/12/2023 19:32

Your DH doesn't know what he's talking about. Unless you live in Spain or somewhere hot most of the time. Curtains keep the draught out, and look great.

Gingerninja4 · 18/12/2023 19:37

Shutters and heavy lined curtains here. Notice difference cold wise when you open them

IoWfairyonthechristmastree · 18/12/2023 19:37

Your DH won’t be moving into my place anytime soon. I think most windows without curtains are a bit undressed

calishire · 18/12/2023 20:37

I literally just put up super thermal curtains in our lounge. I like having curtains plus a blind

Treesinmygarden · 18/12/2023 20:44

Buy that man an interior design magazine for Christmas...

HideTheCroissants · 18/12/2023 20:49

I have curtains in every room apart from kitchen, bathrooms and DHs “office”.
I have net curtains too (live on a bus route).
My friends all have similar window covering arrangements.
My neighbours all have curtains too.
OPs DH is wrong IMO.

Geppili · 19/12/2023 02:53

He's talking out of his French blind!

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 19/12/2023 03:56

Your husband is an idiot.

mondaytosunday · 19/12/2023 04:02

Blinds or shutters in many houses. I did have curtains when k had a big Victorian house, but only on the bay window - blinds elsewhere.

Swishyfishy · 19/12/2023 04:03

I hate roller blinds.

we have Roman blinds in some rooms, curtains in others, slatted wooden blinds in one room

IncompleteSenten · 19/12/2023 04:21

Does he mean net curtains? Because you rarely see those any more

If he means proper curtains he's wrong. They're as popular as ever.

Oblomov23 · 19/12/2023 06:08

What strange view. I don't know anyone without curtains. A few very posh ultra modern London houses may have high tech windows that blacken etc, but most of us have blinds and curtains. Plus curtains are very British, warmth aswell.

borntobequiet · 19/12/2023 06:24

Your husband has never looked at an interior design magazine, or perhaps never visited anyone else’s house.
