Husband says no one has curtains these days

My husband talks scathingly about curtains, saying they are 'old fashioned' and 'you won't see them in any interior design magazine'. I think he's absolutely wrong, and likely people are even more likely to have curtains these days, with energy bills being so high. We have roller blinds throughout. It looks rubbish and our heating bills are high.

So who's right, in your opinion?

Your husband has never looked at an interior design magazine, or perhaps never visited anyone else’s house.

The problem is, he's a graphic designer, so he thinks this somehow means that his view about anything, design wise, is superior. Clearly he is very wrong!!

I think you should buy him an interior design magazine.... because he's talking rubbish.

Curtains / carpets can also make a big difference with managing sound.
Rooms with laminated floors, plain walls and no curtains can echo sound.
We have full drop lined curtains at the front of the house- helps to reduce the sound of outdoor road traffic and also reduce the sound of snoring across the house…
I find that when eating in restaurants (that have no fabric/ furnishings), background chitter chatter sound is greater and it is harder to hear conversations across the table. Much more evident with older friends who have some hearing loss.

If you have fully glazed crittal walls or live in a skyscraper penthouse, then your husband is probably right. But I assume you are talking about 'normal' windows, and there curtains definitely are a design staple, for their aesthetic as well as for their thermal and acoustic qualities.
