ToothFairy2023 · 04/12/2023 09:47

Any suggestions for a colour for a north facing living room. I have purchased 9 testers and non are quite right originally I wanted a teal or a pale sagey green but I have now had a change of heart and have to pick something today?!?

Does anyone have any neutral shades they are happy with no pinks or orange colors. We have brown/tan colour sofas, neutral pale beige carpet and black fireplace.

Thank you so much.

Anyone? Of the testers I have tried Cromarty from F&B or probably in the lead. Also tried Elephants Breath which looked awful a grey/pinky muddy colour and Wimborne White which looked the same colour as the shade of the white paper I painted it on. Dulux Timeless too pale and yellowy. 2nd favourite is Clonarf but probably and possibly too similar to the colour we have in the hall. Artane too dark and Willow tree too green. Help!!

A nice green to try may be Tranquil Dawn by Dulux or Overtly Olive (althoigh this is a darker green)

Neutrals I loveeee Cancun by B&Q or Egyptian cotton by Dulux is always a winner. Ammonite by F&B is a white shade which you might like too

I'd second Egyptian Cotton, always a safe choice.

We have Dulux heritage stone green in ours - it works really well in room with so little natural light and would pair brilliantly with the tan colours to warm it up

After painting an entire wall with patchwork samples I think we ended up with Farrow and Ball Pale Powder, which is pale sage green.

Very close to the colour MN highlights my posts in now I come to think of it.

I have just done the living room in perfectly taupe (dulux) and I love.

We previously had goose down with did not work at all.

verrymerryberry · 04/12/2023 10:54

Our hall is ammonite which an green-grey. Appear very green.

crumpet · 04/12/2023 10:57

I always recommend F&B Bone, which is a lovely neutral sagey green

Hi I had a colour stylist come in and advise in my North facing room to do
Isabelline and fresh plaster by Craig and Rose and looks wonderful .

I had a back wall in fresh plaster and Isabelline on walls ceiling and skirting

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 04/12/2023 10:59

Our north facing living room is F&B shaded white. Great neutral.

WildFlowerBees · 04/12/2023 11:08

We have F&B Cromarty in our Northwest facing living room and at first I was a bit dubious but it's really restful and feels warm, everyone that comes in says how nice it feels. A lighter version is Eddy.

ToothFairy2023 · 04/12/2023 11:19

Oh no I really like that Isabelline but don’t have time to get a tester now and would it work with white @App13? Shaded white looks good. Oh no @WildFlowerBees you have got me back onto Cromarty. I have testers on three walls. On the wall closest to the window and above the TV (and the wall we would mainly see sitting down) Cromarty is the clear winner, it also looks good on the wall behind me but on the wall opposite or facing the window it looks quite dark and dull and Clonarf looks better.

I have Rolling Fog in my living room which is north facing, by little Greene, but I got the colour mixed up (cheaper). Its like a putty/stone colour. Ammonite is also a nice colour from farrow and ball, but has more grey undertones. Added some pictures.

I was the same as you op, we painted the room and the next day I wanted to change it but we decided to give it some time and actually I love it now. It's a really peaceful room. I figured I could always repaint it if I hated it!

Imtoooldforallthis · 04/12/2023 11:32

I've got nutmeg white in my whole house, originally wanted Egyptian cotton but it didn't look quite right. Nutmeg white is a neutral, no yellow but a bit of warmth from a slight pink to it, sound awful but actually work in dark rooms.

App13 · 04/12/2023 11:44

Hi

The colour stylist , whom I've employed many times now for the renovation said that painting the skirting , ceiling doors radiators the same colour in Isabelline will make the room larger, which it does. Ive gone away from the conventional of painting skirting in white and walls in one colour and ceiling white. Even the doors in side are Isabelline.

Its truly magnificent and works in a very northern dark room. As it stays true to its colour.

ToothFairy2023 · 04/12/2023 11:53

@App13 do you have a photo of some or all of your room particularly showing the skirting. Also what colour did you do the ceiling? We have double glazed white bay windows so these would still be visible in ours and a white radiator.

Ceiling, radiators, skirting, window board , walls all in Isabelline, matt and eggshell.

Sorry about picture its a mess as the new extension of the room is being decorated the same and I got the painters in

We went for Dulux almond white in our north facing reception room. It's warm and slightly creamy without being too yellow which works well with brown sofas. Ruled out nutmeg white as too pink and many others as too grey.

Imtoooldforallthis · 04/12/2023 12:37

Alll photos nutmeg white including skirting and archtraves, looks different in every room and light.

No yellow, very very slight pink in some lights.

Just painted our north facing lounge in Slaked Lime by Little Greene. It registers as a neutral warm white / v pale grey. Not creamy at all.
Linen Wash by Little Greene is also lovely, but slightly more creamy with hint of green.
