Any suggestions for a colour for a north facing living room. I have purchased 9 testers and non are quite right originally I wanted a teal or a pale sagey green but I have now had a change of heart and have to pick something today?!?

Does anyone have any neutral shades they are happy with no pinks or orange colors. We have brown/tan colour sofas, neutral pale beige carpet and black fireplace.

Thank you so much.

I've got Rope Ladder, Dulux in a few rooms and F&B Old White/Off White in the others.
Both a have a greeny tint, especially the Rope Ladder - really warming in the north facing rooms.
House is very neutral with lots of woods, whites and aged black accents.
Easy to live with and I love the effects of neutral linen lampshades against the wall colour - so cosy.
I used Ancient Relic, Valspar in the lounge - has a more beige feel but still warm toned.
Good luck!

Hi

The colour stylist , whom I've employed many times now for the renovation said that painting the skirting , ceiling doors radiators the same colour in Isabelline will make the room larger, which it does. Ive gone away from the conventional of painting skirting in white and walls in one colour and ceiling white. Even the doors in side are Isabelline.

Its truly magnificent and works in a very northern dark room. As it stays true to its colour.

I've opted for that too. It really does work, and having the skirtings & door frames a few shades away from white is a blessing! Used to get so sick of repainting the white all the time 😫!

Egyptian Cotton Dulux.
Buy a tester and paint a piece of cardboard then place it around the room. It'll definitely warm up the room and looks lovely against the white skirting boards/ceilings.
Neutral enough not to fight with the brown/tan furniture.
You can add colour with cushions etc.

Thanks all opted for Cromarty mixed up in a local paint shop in the end stayed with traditional white skirting as had already confirmed that with the decorator and green blue in the hallway again with white skirting. Hope it works out ok.

Thanks its just going on today and at lunch time ours looks like a lovely very pale lovely green neutral shade.

What other colours do you have in your room? I am just wondering what would go I would like a new mirror probably round, oval or definitely less rectangular than the previous one and also want a new light fitting and spotted this one from JL on insta in the photo (but want a much cheaper, slighty less bulky alternative) and maybe some new cushions but unsure what to go for with the green.

Any advice gratefully received.

The first photo is of an insta room some elements of which I quite like although I would like ours to be slightly more contemporary and definitely don’t like the white standard lamp in the corner (although maybe not visible from this photo) and would like a smaller more toned down mirror. Their green is much more obviously green than our paler Cromarty which is what I wanted and it seems a little larger with higher ceilings and more period features although ours is 1930’s semi. We have just painted our fire place black. I do love the ceiling light fitting. If anyone has seen anything cheaper and a more budget version of this JL one? I like the more modern less traditional mirrors better on the 2nd and 3rd insta photos if anyone has seen anything similar? Thanks all.
What colour cushions with pale green Cromarty walls (and pale or patterned), Tan/brown leather sofas, black fire place, beige carpet and cream/ivory blinds, white ceiling and skirting boards.

Pretty sure those round mirrors are these IKEA ones.

Check out this STOCKHOLM from IKEA

Here's a little more information:

Mirror, walnut veneer, 60 cm

Great thanks @SwedishEdith love the name, although they have a slightly bigger version (which looks very nice but seems to have few mixed reviews about being distorted etc).

I have Fired Earth Opal (mixed in a Johnston's base) in my north facing bedroom. I would describe it as a calm, clear, watery-pale green backdrop for the stronger accents with the wooden furniture (a mix of teak, walnut and dark-ish cherrywood, so darker than pine/birch). It looks nice with the walnut stained floorboards, sort of conker-brown curtains, and oyster woodwork. We also have a fireplace in the room with green tiles and black grate and surround. The room is a mix of modern pieces and Edwardian fixtures, and this shade seems to work well.

ToothFairy2023 · 07/12/2023 20:50

Thanks @BigSkies2022 do you have any metal colours as well as the wood say in a light fitting, lamp or mirror surround etc and if so did you go for silvery, gold, brass, pewter, black etc. Also do you have any other particular colours and prints in the room i.e. cushions, vases, rugs, throws lamps etc. A lot of photos feature pink accent colours to add warmth but its probably my least favourite colour.

@ToothFairy2023 ooh, interesting point! The only permanent metal 'accent' in there is the light switch on the wall, which is an 'antique bronze' by Forbes & Lomax. If I were to bring in other items, I'd probably stick with that theme, and repeat the bronze/brass (also because that's what I have elsewhere in the house). But I think this shade of paint wouldn't start a fight with pewter, black - whatever you like really. I probably wouldn't choose chrome/silver colours, as that might be a bit cold. But I haven't tried it, that's just a hunch.

In terms of other colours, I have ornaments/paintings/prints in there which are yellow, green and amber glass, deep purple, more greens and reds. I like to put daffodils in there come January, and that kind of yellow looks lovely, IMO. Also black and white photos. I happen to like pink, so I also have quite deep clay/salmon colours in there with a couple of pillowcases and a blanket. But you need not have one thread of pink if you don't like it, lots else will be happy with this kind of green!

ToothFairy2023 · 08/12/2023 19:37

Thanks your light switch sounds good (ours is a horrible plastic one but I would like something but waiting to see what light fitting we decide on). The current one is a but dated but bronzey and we have a couple of pictures with a different sort of bronzey frames. I thought purple might work. I was wondering about purple, coral or orange and other green shades.
