We need MN mediation - which colour sofa?

After a very long search, we’ve finally found a sofa we both agree on. The display sofa was upholstered in a gorgeous deep green colour which is my absolute favourite and would go really well with the William Morris wallpapers I’d like to use. DH is adamant that he doesn’t want more dark green as we have it in the bedroom and master bathroom. Problem is, I don’t like any of the other available colours anywhere near as much. He favours the pale aqua colour but I hate the fabric type that colour comes in. So, a compromise is in order. I prefer deep, rich colours whereas DH likes neutral.

The compromise colours are a dusky pink, almost mauve (which I like but think it might limit decor choices), bright teal (would have preferred a muted version), dark blue, mink or black.

We have to decide this week before the sale ends. Please help us reach a compromise - which colour should we go for please?

The green sounds gorgeous or the dark blue.
I’d love to see a link to the style you’re thinking.

What aspect does the room have ?

IDontLikeItMuch · 07/11/2023 00:50

@DowntonCrabby, I’ve attached an image. It looks better in the flesh and a little darker than this picture.

@Slipknotted the room is on a corner and the large window in the room faces east and the patio doors face south but we’re surrounded by trees so quite shaded.

That green is gorgeous but it would likely suit a very dark blue as well . Lovely sofa .

FortofPud · 07/11/2023 00:58

I'd avoid black for sure. Is mink basically grey? If so, I'd avoid that too. Navy blue or mauve sound best to me.

Beautiful.

You can never have too much green.

Peachyscream · 07/11/2023 01:00

Navy or mauve

HeddaGarbled · 07/11/2023 01:00

I’d go with mink and then have a lighter room altogether. Sounds like you have lots of dark colours in your house already. Think how nice it would be to have a light bright living room.

Missingmyusername · 07/11/2023 01:07

Dusky pink /mauve or mink.

I can’t find pictures of it in all the colours but have taken some screenshots of sofas available in the same fabric/colours.

I agree. Can I swap you for DH?

Get some large fabric colour swatches and try them out in situ at different times of the day.

This is a possibility but I just don’t feel inspired by the mink colour whereas I can see exactly how I would decorate around the green. It’s a Victorian house so I feel lends itself better to dark colours although the living room get a reasonable amount of light.

Sofas are really expensive. Paint and wallpaper less so. So my advice is to forget about the wallpaper you have your eye on and go for the sofa colour you love, or can compromise on. And then decorate around it.

Dogdaydream · 07/11/2023 01:22

I'd go mink or mauve personally. More modern

Housenoob · 07/11/2023 01:22

Can you show us the William morris wallpaper you're going to use?

Green is gorgeous but if not then I'd pick either dark blue or dusky pink. Pale aqua doesn't sound great.

IDontLikeItMuch · 07/11/2023 01:23

@Whataretalkingabout, the shop sent me home with 4 different (tiny) swatches as they’d run out of the others. It’s some distance to the next nearest store that stocks it so not sure I’ll get the chance to bring more swatches before I have to order. The only colour I haven’t seen a swatch of is the black as it wasn’t in their book for some reason.

Team green!

IDontLikeItMuch · 07/11/2023 01:30

@Dogdaydream, this is my plan and whilst I’m trying to keep an open mind, I’m just not inspired by any of the other colours. The issue is, the sofa can come with optional accent fabric and I just adore one that goes perfect with the green.

@Housenoob, I haven’t got a specific one in mind, I just love WM papers so will go with that or something similar depending what sofa colour we settle on. I know they come in a range of colours but the greens and blues are the ones I like most.

I think go for the mauve or dark blue - I’m sure you’ll find a wallpaper/ paint to go. It sounds like dh has compromised with dark green already despite it not being his preference in 2 rooms

IDontLikeItMuch · 07/11/2023 01:34

This is the aqua colour which I actually like but the fabric is a chenille rather than my preferred velvet.

Navy. I love green too but I think navy is more classic and versatile.

Teal second choice.

We have cobalt blue at home, is that an option?

KingsleyBorder · 07/11/2023 01:35

No, avoid chenille like the plague!

IDontLikeItMuch · 07/11/2023 01:39

@Dontsparethehorses, he actually likes green but thinks we should use a different colour before we have to rename it the Green House!

@KingsleyBorder, I agree that navy should stand the test of time. We did a lot of navy in our last house though so I’m a bit bored of it but I could probably make it work. Totally agree about the chenille. I’ve vetoed a lot of sofas based on the fact that the nicest colours only came in chenille.

If you have children or pets, any pale colour is going to be hard to keep clean. I'd be more likely to choose a neutral colour and bring in colour with throws and cushions.
