We need MN mediation - which colour sofa?

After a very long search, we’ve finally found a sofa we both agree on. The display sofa was upholstered in a gorgeous deep green colour which is my absolute favourite and would go really well with the William Morris wallpapers I’d like to use. DH is adamant that he doesn’t want more dark green as we have it in the bedroom and master bathroom. Problem is, I don’t like any of the other available colours anywhere near as much. He favours the pale aqua colour but I hate the fabric type that colour comes in. So, a compromise is in order. I prefer deep, rich colours whereas DH likes neutral.

The compromise colours are a dusky pink, almost mauve (which I like but think it might limit decor choices), bright teal (would have preferred a muted version), dark blue, mink or black.

We have to decide this week before the sale ends. Please help us reach a compromise - which colour should we go for please?

If you can’t agree on the green, I think the navy is the next best choice. I like dark rich coloured velvet - it’s sumptuous.

Black always shows up any thread or crumb.

I went for a light coloured sofa and while it’s the most comfortable sofa ever, the colour was wrong for my lifestyle. I have had to drape a couple of thick woven throws over it so I don’t have to worry about food stains from grandkids (and I’m pretty messy too).

Teal

I would campaign for the green and offer him a choice somewhere else.
But if he really wouldn't, then I'd go for black.

I don't think the chenille would wear as well as the velvet

I think the dark sofas will date sooner than people realise and it sounds like you're investing quite a lot financially into this redecoration.

Usually I'd say mauve with your colour scheme but that one isn't an inspiring shade at all...The mink looks great and I think will achieve a victoriana vibe but you say you don't like it.

Go for the dark blue or the brighter teal (Dress it with darker cushions and even a throw to neutralise it if you prefer).

Agree the aqua is awful.

The teal's lovely. So's the dark blue. I sympathise with DH's view but dusty pink and eau de nil are still quite dated sofa colours, particularly in chenille. OK if you were going for a cheeky retro Margo Leadbetter vibe, but you aren't!

Teal could inject a lively ocean colour theme ... or you could treat it as another shade of green 😉

What about go with the green but then make the rest of your room neutral. Green sofa lots of plants but paler/neutral walls and floor? I think these really dark rooms are starting to look dated.

Mink. Then accidentally smother it in green cushions and throws.

GladWhere · 07/11/2023 07:27

I think all of the colours are lovely.

The mauve looks good!

Green

piscofrisco · 07/11/2023 09:24

First (teal?) or second blue.
Though you are right op the green is the nicest. Is it worth one last discussion? Because I had this with a huge armchair we wanted for our bay window. I wanted teal or soft pink velvet because I liked them
Both and knew I could make
Them work with various colour schemes (so would be able to change my room drastically over the years without changing the very expensive chair). Dh and dd2 wanted burnt orange and argued for it strongly. We went with the orange and only 7 months later I really don't like
It! But I'm
Going to be stuck with it for years!!

I'd go mink - sorry! Just because itll not limit future decorating choices the same, you could still have William Morris wallpaper and cosy deep patterns etc with it, but easier to redesign the room with a more neutral sofa.
I dont see the point of navy or black because the overall feel will be the same as with deep green - but not as nice a sofa, so neither of you will get what you want.
Mauve is nice, but I cant really see how youll decorate around it (other than with green, which DH has already vetoed once...), without it being a bit dull.
I hate the aqua, I think itll be more difficult to live with than any other colour.

Why not chenille? I have a good quality chenille sofa that’s nearly 20 years old and the fabric has worn incredibly well. I wouldn’t write it off based on durability. (But maybe there is another reason!).

the shimmery look is dated to me but that’s only my taste.

#teamgreen

But failing that, #navycompromise

ButterMyParsnip · 07/11/2023 21:09

I like the green but my living room is painted dark green on the walls AND ceiling. We use our living room in the evening so I went with a dark sleepy colour and it's north facing so was always going to be dull. I see it as my place to wind down. Funnily enough our bedroom is a pale minty green. Our compromise was that the living room would be for winding down whereas the bedroom would stay neutral and bright to help us wake up in the morning.
