Am I making a big mistake? Abort mission?

My kitchen has left me feeling uninspired for a couple of years now. At first it felt lovely and fresh but I've since really regretted my cupboards and wished I'd stretched to a nice bold colour in a hand painted wood. Everything just felt so white and everything blended in to each other a bit between the units, worktops and walls. I snapped yesterday and did a few swatches and felt like I loved the F&B Inchyra so I got a bit carried away and decided yes this is the one.

Woken up today and gone downstairs and god it's dark isn't it. I've done a huge section but thankfully not the whole room. Is it just the shock? Or is it a terrible idea?

I actually love it but I like experimenting with colour and am not timid.

SeulementUneFois · 21/10/2023 09:28

Hmm ... everyone's different.
It looks a bit dark to me as it's there.
But then I remember seeing photos with dark kitchens looking amazing.
Can you find one of those online things that let you mock up your kitchen virtually?

MiddleagedBeachbum · 21/10/2023 09:29

Love it too - it will really make the units and white / grey pop now. Keep going it will be worth it!

Aquamarine1029 · 21/10/2023 09:31

It's just paint, and it's just the walls. It's an easy fix to change it again in a while if you end up not liking it. It's a beautiful colour, op. I say go for it.

Ihaveated · 21/10/2023 09:32

I love it! I don't think you can tell properly until it's done but I think the room looks like it can definitely take the dark colour.

Missingmyusername · 21/10/2023 09:35

I love it too. It’s only paint OP, if you hate it that much just change it back!

DaftQuestionForToday · 21/10/2023 09:35

@InchyraUnsure

its only the walls. Just finish it & live with it for a bit, you can always pain over it in the spring!

im putting in a new kitchen, it's actually very much like yours (size & shape) & I'm undecided about unit & wall colours.

id love more photos when you've finished

where did you get your cabinets from & what style & colour are they? I really like them.

Petrine · 21/10/2023 09:36

I think it’s too dark. Your kitchen window looks to be small and I think the overall effect will be claustrophobic.

Just a bit of advice… when testing out a colour it is best to get a roll of lining paper and paint the test colour onto it. You then have a good sized swatch to blu-tack onto the wall. Painting directly onto the wall, especially dark colours, is an absolute pain to cover - both brush strokes and the colour show through.

Spongeeater · 21/10/2023 09:37

I love it.

InchyraUnsure · 21/10/2023 09:39

I know it's only paint but it is so dark it would take quite a few coats to cover and it's the kitchen so it's fiddly going around all the units so I'd prefer to not have to paint it back. I'd like to get it right first time.

Wish I'd heard of that lining paper trick first!

Yes the windows are small, it is dual aspect so there is a window either end of the room. The one the other end is slightly bigger but still not huge.

Go for it, you have brought the paint now.

Live with it, it will make a brilliant backdrop for Christmas decorations.

Then decide if it is too dark later one, you are only loosing your time (which I know is a cost in itself) as the paint is already paid for. Plus you might love it when it is all done.

ThreeCanKeepASecret · 21/10/2023 09:42

Maybe not helpful but I love the before photo, a really calm space.

Aquamarine1029 · 21/10/2023 09:43

You could have the paint shop add white to the can to lighten the colour.

Petrine · 21/10/2023 09:43

My kitchen is painted Wevet (walls) and the cupboards are Downpipe. So I do like the dark grey colour but maybe just a bit less intense than the one you’ve chosen.

you could always buy a tin of lighter paint and mix the two - just make sure you keep a note of the mix used if you need to buy further tins.

Maybe not helpful but I love the before photo, a really calm space.

It felt like it at first but it feels a bit sterile almost. Cold and clinical with all the white. I definitely want to do something, I'm just unsure if it is this...

It will be wonderfully cosy with lamps in the winter. I like it.

Tryingtokeepcalmandcarryon · 21/10/2023 09:47

We have F and B ‘light blue’ in our kitchen, well, colour mixed in cheaper equivalent). It was recommended by an interior designer. Adds some colour but it’s not as dark and it’s calming. Hats off to you for having the skills to paint in a dark colour the cutting in is so difficult! (We have a study painted in Hague blue which we love!)

InchyraUnsure · 21/10/2023 09:48

I'm not scared of dark colours, our lounge has all 4 walls painted F&B Hague Blue. I only wanted a feature wall but didn't make it clear and my husband painted all 4 when I was away one night as a surprise and I walked in and thought oh no. I love it now, it feels so cosy and ambient with the lamps. The downstairs toilet has no windows and is painted F&B Green Smoke and again it's dark but it works with the light fittings and gold touches. I'm just worried because it's the kitchen and I don't want it to feel gloomy!

Personally I think it’s too dark. I get you want to warm the space up but a lighter green may be better.

along the colour of your light fitting. Which I really like. Can I ask where that is from please?

Meadowdog · 21/10/2023 09:51

I love it. We had our old front door painted that colour - one of my favourites. I think it looks cosy and inviting and really sets off your furniture and fixtures.

Tellmemore16 · 21/10/2023 09:52

I personally find it too dark, I think a lighter green would compliment your kitchen nicely tho! For what it’s worth I think your kitchen is lovely

IhearyouClemFandango · 21/10/2023 09:52

I like it. Crack on and post pics after. 👍

everycloud3 · 21/10/2023 09:52

I love it!

NigelHarmansNewWife · 21/10/2023 09:53

I agree with Peridot1. If you like green, I think a sage green, which is lighter than the colour you've used, would work well to warm the space up. You could perhaps use the dark F&B on one wall.
