Am I making a big mistake? Abort mission?

My kitchen has left me feeling uninspired for a couple of years now. At first it felt lovely and fresh but I've since really regretted my cupboards and wished I'd stretched to a nice bold colour in a hand painted wood. Everything just felt so white and everything blended in to each other a bit between the units, worktops and walls. I snapped yesterday and did a few swatches and felt like I loved the F&B Inchyra so I got a bit carried away and decided yes this is the one.

Woken up today and gone downstairs and god it's dark isn't it. I've done a huge section but thankfully not the whole room. Is it just the shock? Or is it a terrible idea?

I love it but maybe get some lining paper to paint on now and finish off the gaps to see what you think. I love dark jewel tones though so I would go for it personally

DuchessOfSausage · 21/10/2023 09:56

It's dark and looks cold, and makes the units look glaringly white. The white looked much better.

TerfTalking · 21/10/2023 09:56

I love it! just add a few more bright green plants and you're all good. If you really hate it, leave it for the winter then change it in the spring, but I think its great.

pictoosh · 21/10/2023 09:56

For me no. It's a good shade for woodwork possibly but will end up feeling oppressive on a day to day basis. Other dark colours are so much more sumptuous. The grey is rather bleak.

Maybe not helpful but I love the before photo, a really calm space.

Agree, the"before" is enviable.

I'd abort mission.

CrunchyCarrot · 21/10/2023 09:57

Depends how much light your kitchen has naturally and the lighting you have in there. Far too dark for my taste, I wouldn't paint the walls such a dark colour. My own kitchen is pale yellow walls and light brown cupboards. In your shoes I'd leave the walls alone and change the cupboard doors colour to something brighter. I really dislike white as it shows the dirt.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 21/10/2023 09:57

I think it will look a bit bitty with the cupboards: that kind of dark suits colour drenching in grand sitting rooms with lots of lamps.

Can you paint the cupboards instead? Maybe dark on the lowers and keep the pale on the uppers? Or a different green?

Greens I like are F&B Bancha – it’s Olive but better – and Little Greene Citrine.

Or a deep egg yolk yellow on the cupboards!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 21/10/2023 09:57

I love it. Think it will be really striking with the light cabinets.

NoSquirrels · 21/10/2023 09:59

I’m a big fan of bold colours but I think it’s too dark. Is it north-facing? It doesn’t look like a very light-filled room so the colour you choose probably shouldn’t be so intense - what works for a cosy living room won’t be the same for a more functional space.

Have you thought about a brighter but warmer intense F&B colour? One of the yellows or reds?

InchyraUnsure · 21/10/2023 10:00

I would love to paint the walls a warmer white and have deep jewel coloured cupboards but I don't think changing the colour of the cupboards in an option. This was my first choice but they are just vinyl wrapped MDF ones, not painted wood so I might ruin a brand new kitchen (well, two years old now) if I try. I can't afford a new kitchen, annoyingly when we put this one in we probably could of stretched to wood but it genuinely didn't occur to me with all the other choices we were having to make at the time.

I love the before, too.

My kitchen is fucking horrible and yours is what I have in mind when I finally get it done.

NoSquirrels · 21/10/2023 10:11

I think I’d go for one of the F&B pinks. Something warmer, will tie in with the wood and the green accents like the light and (possibly?) the chairs.

BlueRidgeMountain · 21/10/2023 10:15

Our kitchen was very white all over (units, walls, doors), so I got a very dark inky blue and painted the two walls where the dining table is, and left the other two white where the units are. DH requested that as he’s scared of bold colours, but I think it’s a good compromise of adding colour, and helps to zone the space into cooking and dining areas. Like your kitchen, it’s a good size light space l, so can definitely take the darker colour without it feeling oppressive.

EerilyDecorated · 21/10/2023 10:18

I don’t think it works with your flooring and grey table runner although it does suit your table and bench. How about just doing part of the kitchen in a deeper colour? We have a white kitchen, speckled counter and tiles on the working side of ours but on the living/eating side we have oak counters and Dulux Denim Drift which is a soft warm blue and makes it feel very cosy, it tones with our grey grouting and speckled counter tops as well.

WoollyBat · 21/10/2023 10:20

I love it, and it looks great with the wood. It is dark but it definitely adds style and interest to your kitchen.

what I would do is carry on and paint one full wall in that colour, or however many walls you’ve started on, and leave the rest, then live with it for a bit. Just doing one or two walls can work really well, I have my bedroom done like that - it means you get colour and interest but not an overwhelming “immersed” feeling.

ThreeCanKeepASecret · 21/10/2023 10:24

Have you thought about adding colour using a roman blind that sits outside the recess and at whatever you’ve got at the other end window wise?

IsAnybodyListening · 21/10/2023 10:25

I love the colour. I would add a smallish bohemian type rug that has the wall color with bright colors just to tye it in, and make it pop!

CrystalMaisie · 21/10/2023 10:38

I think a warmer colour would be nicer.

Bigroundpear · 21/10/2023 10:41

I would have gone for a much warmer colour - invisible green by little greene has earthy warm tones in it, but would have given the same amount of drama.

I absolutely adore colour, wouldn’t be able to stand your before photos, looks like a show flat, nice but so dry. I think you should be bold and keep going. If you can switch to the LG green.

SwedishEdith · 21/10/2023 10:49

I'd go a burnt orange (is it called Charlotte's Locks or something like that) or Dutch Orange. I think that would look great in an eating area.

HashBrownandBeans · 21/10/2023 10:51

My whole house is darker than dark. I love it. Go for it!

Peachyscream · 21/10/2023 10:53

When I bought my house, I couldn’t afford a new kitchen but wanted to tart it up a bit. It’s battered but functional.
Bright wallpaper under cupboards instead of tiles. Bright paint above cupboards. Other walls white.
Looks good.

StopLickingTheDog · 21/10/2023 10:56

I like it. The light colours feel very clinical. I think there's enough cupboard/work top that actually there's not much wall, and the wall behind the dining table already has pictures and stuff to break it up.

3luckystars · 21/10/2023 10:58

I live the colour but think your kitchen is a bit dark for it.

Or Bamboozled is another good earthy orange
