Am I making a big mistake? Abort mission?

My kitchen has left me feeling uninspired for a couple of years now. At first it felt lovely and fresh but I've since really regretted my cupboards and wished I'd stretched to a nice bold colour in a hand painted wood. Everything just felt so white and everything blended in to each other a bit between the units, worktops and walls. I snapped yesterday and did a few swatches and felt like I loved the F&B Inchyra so I got a bit carried away and decided yes this is the one.

Woken up today and gone downstairs and god it's dark isn't it. I've done a huge section but thankfully not the whole room. Is it just the shock? Or is it a terrible idea?

I like the dark one, op.

StarlightLime · 21/10/2023 16:47

I love your pink table legs! @LibertyLily

TriceratopsRocks · 21/10/2023 17:09

I love the colour - and it's a good job because it's the colour of our new kitchen which is being installed on Monday! I just need to work out what colour to paint the walls.

LeonBlack · 21/10/2023 17:12

I think it’s too dark and swampy.

Someone mentioned Overtly Olive, I have some of that here left over from the babies bedroom. I have done a swatch, a much smaller one though 😂

Oh, I think the Olive is great! But whatever you do, you'll need to think about window dressing. The white window will pop out starkly and there is your opportunity to draw it into the new colour scheme with a nice blind.

DappledThings · 21/10/2023 17:13

I much prefer your first green to the olive

CymruChris · 21/10/2023 17:24

I think everything else is so light, the room can take it. Love your dining chairs by the way!

DuchessOfSausage · 21/10/2023 17:47

The olive is much better

LaurieStrode · 21/10/2023 17:49

The olive is much better.

Honestly with such a nice kitchen I would have left it alone and added splashes of colour with framed prints and other decor. But each to her own.

InchyraUnsure · 21/10/2023 18:02

I've covered the lot up 😂 I feel like the Inchyra is too blue, I think I would like a greener green if I'm going to have green but I also don't think that is olive. I definitely think I want a warmer tone.

Not interested in changing the chairs as I love them and yes desperately need blinds throughout the house but so expensive. We're getting there! Blush

I'm sort of thinking the whole room could be a warmer shade of white, it's very bright brilliant white and I don't like it, I'm also thinking behind the cupboards could stay a warmer white and I could somehow separate the dining area with a colour? Somehow?

Little Greene Limestone is a nice light shade, can look very different in different lighting. Have you thought about Phillips hue bulbs, you can change the colour/tone/level of light so easily. I use a warm white flickering candle effect on the spots nearest the dining pendant when I have people round in my kitchen diner.

DuchessOfSausage · 21/10/2023 18:07

I like your chairs @InchyraUnsure . The only thing with putting a warm colour is that if your floor is cool toned they'll compete.

You could never tell!

therealcookiemonster · 21/10/2023 18:22

I think it will look lovely... but I would only do one side of the room and not all the walls. it will bring definition to the kitchen. I love it!

I can't find who asked about the light fitting but it's from Made.com, Kaleido in green and brass. I bought it 2 or 3 years ago though so it might not be available anymore.

Hi OP, going off the topic of the post here but I have this light fitting sitting in a box waiting for when I finally get my garage converted but I'm worried it's going to be too long. Are you able to tell me if you were able to adjust the length?

I got it on the made.com John Pye auction site a couple of months ago if any is looking for it there might still be some available.

Snorkmaidenn · 21/10/2023 18:33

I love the olive paint! I have a white kitchen with Egyptian cotton on walls with black artwork and accessories. The dark green is too much of a contrast with the white for me, but we are all different thank goodness and you do what makes you feel happy.

Lavenderosa · 21/10/2023 18:34

You could have the warmer white and then in the dining area, you could run a dado rail around the wall at the height of the kitchen workstops, paint the rail and below it in Inchyra or another dark colour - I like Little Greene's Ambleside - I did my bedroom in that.

Lucy377 · 21/10/2023 19:00

When you buy a sample pot, paint a largish sheet of card or paper and carry that around to test it around the room.

Don't paint the sample onto the wall.

Always worth buying the sample pots.

Rainbowshit · 21/10/2023 19:17

I love it! Dark paints always look a bit odd until it's all finished IMHO.

Sussurations · 21/10/2023 19:26

I agree with pp who said it’s not the darkness but the colour - I tried Inchyra on my stairs and it just didn’t work, so I used Mole’s Breath instead. I really recommend it as a colour in general as it’s very versatile, very soft and gentle but has enough weight to feel deliberate, and different lights draw out different aspects of the colour - nice with a dual aspect.

I didn’t like the olive colour with your units and floor at all. I think you need something that is more neutral in the sense of being neither too warm nor too cool. Be wary of going for too much of a compromise.

You need something to make the window less stark. Either a simple curtain or a Roman blind. I think a fairly stylised/bold botanical pattern would look good. And it would be good to paint the reveal and maybe even the frame itself, to reduce starkness. I agree with pp who said the room needs a bit more texture.

LuluBlakey1 · 21/10/2023 19:35

I love your light.

I think the room looks a bit clinical. You could make a huge difference with a blind and some cushions and/or table cover. Not the ones below but just as examples of pops of colour and how they can create atmosphere.

@Colinswheels Yes you can adjust the length of each of the three pendants!

Rather than paint, have you thought about wallpaper? Just the dining area. Some modern white/green on botanically. Patterns can introduce warmer/darker colours without overpowering/darkening a room.

Lighttodark · 21/10/2023 19:38

I like the colour generally but I think it’s too dark against the light kitchen. It will look too much of a stark contrast imo. The kitchen side does look a bit bland. You can add interest and colour in other ways - plants, darker wooden accessories (your decorative boards look a bit too warm toned). The dining side looks a bit more balanced with a mix of wooden tones and black against the lighter walls.
