Am I making a big mistake? Abort mission?

My kitchen has left me feeling uninspired for a couple of years now. At first it felt lovely and fresh but I've since really regretted my cupboards and wished I'd stretched to a nice bold colour in a hand painted wood. Everything just felt so white and everything blended in to each other a bit between the units, worktops and walls. I snapped yesterday and did a few swatches and felt like I loved the F&B Inchyra so I got a bit carried away and decided yes this is the one.

Woken up today and gone downstairs and god it's dark isn't it. I've done a huge section but thankfully not the whole room. Is it just the shock? Or is it a terrible idea?

Given you are so far in I'd finish that one wall and see how you feel.

It's so dark that at least if you do the full wall, should you decide to paint over it with something else you'll get a more even finish.

uggmum · 21/10/2023 11:28

I love it.
I have a similar colour in my bedroom and a slightly lighter colour in my kitchen.

Chocolateweight · 21/10/2023 11:31

It’s not too dark of it feels as if it is maybe change the pictures behind the table for a huge mirror and add some kind of lighting at the top of the cupboards

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 21/10/2023 11:37

I like it! Keep going and get some fairy lights in, will be lovely and cosy for winter then you can reevaluate in spring if you like

needtonamechangeagain · 21/10/2023 11:44

Love it.. paint it all but go and grab some big houseplants get some texture and greenery in the room.

SoupDragon · 21/10/2023 11:54

I think it's far too dark and also not a nice colour - to me it's quite dreary and you wanted to make it less cold/clinical. However, that's all personal taste. I do think that if you are finding the tester patch too dark you might want to go lighter.

I think the cupboards are fine - they'll go with lots of different colours of paintwork etc to create a different feel to the room.

Caspianberg · 21/10/2023 11:55

I like it and would continue.

i think it won’t be too dark as your kitchen units are light, and then you will have those pictures back on wall, so it not just a solid colour.

I freaked out when we painted large hallway all dark green, including ceiling. But now I live it. We added artwork, mirror, there’s large windows anyway and the woodwork was kept natural light oak. It works. Used to be white

Lucy377 · 21/10/2023 12:04

Can you post a pic of the whole dining area again with the new dark patch?

Isheabastard · 21/10/2023 12:04

I can see that looking fabulous.

Remember we are having some very dull days and that could be skewing your thoughts. What’s the light levels on a sunny day?

I have a dark kitchen where I currently live. Strategic tables lamps and plenty of plants has really helped.

If it’s any consequence your before kitchen was ‘nice’, but it look like a million other kitchens. The green would make it chic I think

DappledThings · 21/10/2023 12:08

It looks great. Way better than the before photos. I agree it looks very clinical before.

SoupDragon · 21/10/2023 12:09

I far prefer the small strip of the lighter colour to the left of the dark one. It has more colour to it rather than just being dark.

Parakeetamol · 21/10/2023 12:25

It's not the darkness, it's the shade that looks wrong. The cupboards seem an almost pinky grey so the more yellow undertones of the green look odd. I'd try and find a dark green that matches the undertones.

featheryfancy · 21/10/2023 12:40

We have this in our kitchen with light grey cupboards and blinds and gold accents to brighten it up.
It is quite dark but I absolutely love it. My favourite paint in the whole house.
After being used to it all very neutral and light it will take a bit of getting used to but keep going!

TheLonelyGoatTurd · 21/10/2023 12:55

For me it’s not the darkness as such (I have a Studio Green wall in my kitchen), it’s the particular shade. I’ve tried Inchyra Blue in a few places in my house and wanted to love it but it just felt sort of sapping. I find De Nimes is the same.

LibertyLily · 21/10/2023 13:31

I don't think it's necessarily too dark (but we have loads of dark/saturated colours in our house which has very thick walls and mostly small windows) and imho it's much better than the clinical look of your before pic.

I love Inchyra Blue - we painted our dark hallway with it after deciding to embrace the gloom! We colour-drenched the whole space (walls, ceiling and joinery) except the upstairs landing where we have one wall in William Morris Strawberry Thief paper.

It's a great colour that can look blue, grey or greenish depending on the location/lighting. I was actually tempted to use it our kitchen but instead chose F&B Oval Room Blue on the lower cabinets and island, keeping the few upper cupboards cream (Craig & Rose Pale Oak) same as the walls.

However, I think one of the F&B dusky pinks would possibly work better than Inchyra in your space - I'd get a couple of match pots and paint some lining paper samples before you go any further.

It looks good and I'd add a bright window blind. I'd also replace the two dining chairs with mustard ones or if not, paint the chair legs in Vardo, also the table legs or for added oomph - paint the stool legs in a strong pink like Rangwali.

sparklefresh · 21/10/2023 13:55

I think it looks great! Gorgeous kitchen by the way. But that colour will really make it special

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 21/10/2023 13:59

You have a lovely kitchen OP. Personally I think that shade of green is too dark and a lighter shade would look nicer.

ButterMyParsnip · 21/10/2023 14:07

I think it's the shade rather than the dark colour. We've just painted our dining room in Little Greene Royal Navy and I love it.

trulyunruly01 · 21/10/2023 14:43

Have you done the kitchen beyond the breakfast bar yet?
The dark will probably be quite nice in the dining area, especially under lamplight over the winter. The wood of your dining table looks great with it. And you could break up the dark area with a couple of toning canvases, maybe food-themed. Accessorise heavily.
For the area between the worktops and the cupboards I'd go a lighter shade of green, maybe Overtly Olive.
Above the breakfast bar, put a shallow shelf unit onto the wall to help disguise the changeover point.

InchyraUnsure · 21/10/2023 15:02

Someone mentioned Overtly Olive, I have some of that here left over from the babies bedroom. I have done a swatch, a much smaller one though 😂

I think that’s really nice.

InchyraUnsure · 21/10/2023 15:19

I can't find who asked about the light fitting but it's from Made.com, Kaleido in green and brass. I bought it 2 or 3 years ago though so it might not be available anymore.

That was me @InchyraUnsure. It’s really nice. I think Made.com went out of business though.

Peridot1 · 21/10/2023 16:45

Just googled Made.com and they seem to be trading again.
