Grey kitchen cupboards with mustard or yellow walls? Opinions please?

So we've been in our house years and the kitchen must be 15/20 years old. We are doing a wrap around conversion in a couple of years so just doing a few cheap bits at the moment to make it a bit nicer foenthe next few years. We were away this week so asked our local painter to paint the kitchen cupboards grey. It's the rustoleum slate grey cupboard paint. Just got home and he's done a great job and I'm really happy with it. However the rest of the kitchen is pale grey and it all just looks a bit grey! Also have 20 year old orange and mustard tiles so thinking what about painting the walls mustard. It's a small kitchen about 10 x8 so actually not that much wall as lots of cupboards windows. So anyone gone with a mustard or orange kitchen even with grey cupboards. Pics appreciated

Photo of the new cupboards against the old tiles! Hated them when I first moved here but they've grown on me!

I would not paint the kitchen yellow. There are certain colours "experts" advise to avoid in kitchens, yellow is one of them, and I happen to agree. Especially a mustard yellow.

Personally, I would replace the tile and choose a gorgeous colour for the walls. You could also paint the tile with tile paint if you want a change but don't want to rip the existing tile out right now.

Yep not up for ripping anything out as this is just a tidy up job until we rip the whole lot out and extend. Hadn't thought of tile paint. Will have a look into that.

See if it was alot of wall I would agree but it's only a small bit!

This I like. Recently painted the also dated bathroom a dark dusty blue and I bloody love it and smile every time I go in there and have a feeling I would feel the same about my bright mustard kitchen.

Love a sage green BTW. Recently painted an old mahogany fireplace sage green and I think it looks awesome 👌

Grey doesn't go...too dark
Consider
pale yellow and white
Orange and white
Navy and white

I really like Farrow & Ball dayroom yellow. I painted our old kitchen in it, and I think it looked fab. Might be worth considering?

I'm intrigued about the PP comment that "the experts" say you shouldn't put yellow in the kitchen… I am planning to paint my new kitchen yellow as soon as we get it done… And previously had a mango orange glass splashback, too, which I suspect experts may not approve of either...

Dulux do quite a good dupe of F&B Dayroom Yellow, which I think is called vanilla sundae.

I’d replace the tiles with a bright turquoise backing. Or something colourful like Spanish tiles with bright blues in them. Blue & grey are classic. You’d hand to change the handles though.

EezyOozy · 06/03/2023 17:36

I’ve got a bright yellow kitchen and i ruddy love it! I’m going to paint my cupboards a very dark/muted teal

Ah image upload fail! Sorry

Lovely!

Never heard the thing about not using yellow in a kitchen before- I think it's a lovely colour for a kitchen.

@EezyOozy - that is a gorgeous yellow… What paint and colour is it please?

EspeciallyDedicated · 06/03/2023 18:04

My friend has units in a similar grey with turquoise tiles and it looks lovely

We've just moved into a house ŵith a bright yellow kitchen. It's vile. Please don't

WinterMusings · 06/03/2023 18:14

@Kitchenette

have a Google. There are all kinds of recommendations for colours to use in kitchens and a lot of suggestions for colours not to use. Mainly to do with colours that are good for digestion or creativity. Interesting but brain fog not enabling recollection of what's what just now!

WinterMusings · 06/03/2023 18:18

@Deedippy it wouldnt be my choice, but I'm not living there!!

it's only paint, it's only a small area! Just do it, if you don't like it you can just paint over it!!

I HATED the tiles in my kitchen, so I removed them (great fun, highly recommended!!). I still have some bits of tile adhesive on the walls, but it's a million times better than the gopping tiles! When
i fo the kitchen I'll probably take it back to brick to get it properly re plastered, looking forward to that too!!

Choconut · 06/03/2023 18:20

Yellow/orange and grey is really corporate and dated IMO. I'd paint over all the tiles or all the coloured tiles with one colour and then paint the rest of the room to match

Saz12 · 06/03/2023 19:17

I think the “do t paint your kitchen yellow” is the idea that “people” find yellow energising and lively, so not conducive to evening meals and digestion. Hence use it in utility rooms, and your “morning room” (what???! Doesn’t everyone have a room for different times of day??). Personally I find yellow happy, cosy and friendly, so perfect in a kitchen. DH claims colour is irrelevant to emotion - which is probably true for most people....

OP, what did you do in the end?

Wolfcub · 06/03/2023 19:20

Ivy kitchen is grey, mustard yellow and white and I love it.

Honeyroar · 06/03/2023 19:24

Our kitchen is yellow too. In the daylight it’s a really sunny colour (in a very old cottage with rows of mullion windows, so perhaps not as light as a modern house).

Thanks @EezyOozy - it's fab 😄

Snugglemonkey · 06/03/2023 20:42

I have had a yellow kitchen twice and both times it has been lovely. I particularly like @EezyOozy 's colour. I would go for it op.
