Colour help for someone with no clue

I’m in the process of picking things for living room but my head is actually hurting with it. I just can’t visualise at all. Any help from those far better at this than me would be so appreciated.

Living room is 5x3.5m west facing floor to ceiling windows at one end, French doors into kitchen at other.

i have sofas (attached) already and don’t want to replace. I’ve ordered rug (attached) and have seen curtains in a burnt orange that I’m considering too.

I was thinking dark grey for carpet (out of necessity as current one was white and is now vile brown) and grey for walls. But I don’t know. I can’t pick the right shade and every time I look at grey carpets in store I literally go colour blind. Have some colours I like on punters (also attached)

Was thinking a kind of art deco/French old lady’s sitting room kinda vibe , a bit like the picture attached taken in IKEA. All fittings are gold, inc my beautiful gin trolley so that can’t change.

Any ideas?

The sofa looks ok but I wouldn't go for grey walls.

superdupernova · 02/02/2023 20:41

I wouldn't go for grey either. I love dark and bold colours but if you want a lighter neutral I think an oatmeal type colour would work better with orange and blue.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 02/02/2023 20:49

So an oatmeal carpet… will have to be reasonably dark as I’m done in with having a white carpet.. cat, red wine blah blah

What colour walls?

@Chocbuttonsandredwine , if it's a house or ground floor flat, get a wood-type flooring in not grey. If a flat, get a middling sort of colour like a mid-blue or mid-green and make sure it has a fleck.

Unless you have a white cat. If your cat is a pale colour, go for a light-to medium oatmeal.

KirstenBlest · 02/02/2023 21:04

Red wine? Get a coffee table or side table.

fruitbrewhaha · 02/02/2023 21:07

Does the flooring have to be carpet? Could
you put down a wooden floor, or do you have floorboards under neath. I think for the maximalism look you are going for in the photo you need nice vintage glamour (I’m not seeing art deco I there) so floorboards would go better. Not grey.
There are so many dark and interesting colours out there that would create this look. A dark green could look good.
Although the sofa you have chosen is very mid-century in shape so perhaps you may steer more in the direction.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 02/02/2023 21:08

I had thought about flooring but the doors and all skirtings are white… which I think would look odd unfortunately. Would be happy with oatmeal I think

What’s wrong with floorboards and white skirtings?

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 02/02/2023 21:09

I have tables. I also have a clumsy boyfriend, a teen and mates trooping through and a cat running back and forwards without wiping his feet.

I don’t know. Thought it would look weird?

No it looks fine

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 02/02/2023 21:13

See I told you I was terrible. Not art deco. Vintage glamour. Yes.

So dark wood flooring would look ok with white skirtings and leading into kitchen with pine coloured wood? Like this ?

ps see carpet rotten

I have wooden ish floors and white skirtings. It's easier to sweep cat and human hairs than it is to vacuum them.

I'd paint the walls brilliant white and use artwork and soft furnishings to add colour.

wickerhearth · 02/02/2023 21:18

What about wallpaper?

fruitbrewhaha · 02/02/2023 21:19

If you go for a wooden floor I think it would need to match the other wood floor.

You can of course paint the woodwork to match or complement the walls, they dont have to stay white.

How about a sage green for the walls?

Brilliant white is quite hard on the eye. It’s not comfortable. When we did our house up the builders sprayed the whole house in white. It felt very different when we went over with an ‘off white’ in some rooms. Just more relaxing and less cheap looking.

For a living room you can afford to make a statement with a colour.

fruitbrewhaha · 02/02/2023 21:24

I’ve noticed the rug is from la redoute. Have a look at their styling. It’s mid century with rattan and lots of greens and terracotta colours.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 02/02/2023 21:25

See that’s what I thought, and the what colour do you paint the other sides of the doors? And before you know it it’s turned into a whole house thing. No. No. No.

im only going to be in this house for another few years so really don’t want it to be a mammoth task/expense

What colour is the sofa? Navy or dark grey?

I wouldn't know - there isn't a lot of bare wall in Blest House.

Floralnomad · 02/02/2023 21:30

I have mid / dark wood floors with white skirting and doors it looks fine , you just need to get matching door thresholds ( if you have them ) .

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 02/02/2023 21:31

Sofa is navy.
