Shoe storage!

We have a medium sized house, family of 5 and we have so many shoes!!!! And not many places to put them tbh. I have a shoe rack in the hall but it only holds about 10 pairs. The rest are all over the house, no room in wardrobes either.

I have looked at shoe cabinets but I don’t have room for one really.

What do others do?

Have this problem a bit too! Bigger shoe rack?

Spendonsend · 07/01/2023 09:48

We have a shoe mountain that we trip over on entering the house, it also smells.

DRS1970 · 07/01/2023 09:49

You can get racks that hang on backs of doors.

Railwayroad · 07/01/2023 09:52

I think it boils down to the fact we have no room. For a bigger shoe rack or all of the shoes!

I might need a shoe cull. Or a giant basket to Chuck them all in.

Thankfully we have a small porch so can hide our shoes - and the smell - out there. We’ve got cube shelves with fabric drawers (like IKEA kallax). Not great but looks a bit tidier.

boboshmobo · 07/01/2023 10:33

I have a ikea Kallax in the downstairs toilet and everyone has a box

Enko · 07/01/2023 10:45

We use a shoe rack from futon company. They are.more compact than others I find this one

FinallyHere · 07/01/2023 11:22

Yeah, it's almost always about having too many of something rather than needing more storage.

Put all your shoes away somewhere inaccessible like the attic. Let everyone keep three maybe four pairs.

See which ones you really can't live without. Throw the rest away. Good luck.

Time40 · 07/01/2023 11:29

I've got all the infrequently-worn ones in shoeboxes in a bookcase. It works really well.

Let everyone keep three maybe four pairs

Sorry, but in what sort of world could anyone manage with four pairs of shoes? That sounds like a recipe for utter misery to me! 👠😃👠👠

FinallyHere · 07/01/2023 11:41

Maybe just me. 😃

Not just you

Dog ate 2 of my pairs and I am weeping (thought he had outgrown that but apparently only everyone else's shoes)

holidaytimeatlast · 07/01/2023 16:48

Never mind the adults, often for kids there's:
Wellies
School shoes
Sandals/crocs/sliders
Trainers

And that's before hobbies creep in and you have football boots, ballet/tap shoes, indoors/outside PE shoes, plimsolls for school etc!

Plus other seasonal like water shoes, snow boots, canvas shoes

Times this by several children, then allow children's feet to grow = utter chaos!!

bobbytorq · 07/01/2023 17:04

There used to be six of us and now we're down to 3. I still haven't enough shoe storage🤣. I quite like shoes though and have about 30 pairs. The kids have wellies, walking boots, school shoes and a couple of pairs of trainers each. I've a shoe rack in the hall, one in the utility room and two in my bedroom.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 07/01/2023 17:11

Just mine take up two long shelves in the cupboard under the stairs!

Could you maybe keep the more occasional shoes in everyone’s wardrobes, and then sort bigger/better storage for the hall for your everyday ones?

Railwayroad · 07/01/2023 17:38

Some useful ideas here -thanks.

We have these long shoe racks from Ikea either side of the porch. Holds a lot of pairs of shoes. Then in summer I put winter boots/shoes up in the loft and vice versa in winter.

I hate to admit it but I have a double wardrobe with sliding doors in the “box” room/study full of shoe boxes. All labelled & easy to find. (Big fat felt tip.)
I also bought some plastic see through/opaque boxes with lids for when the original boxes get threadbare.
I appreciate this arrangement takes up space but it’s better than the basket in the downstairs cloakroom! I religiously put shoes away (most expensive ones have shoe trees in them!)
If I still had family at home I dare say all those shoes would drive me potty. I can’t recall how we managed.
I defo don’t store shoes in with clothing or in my bedroom. Can, potentially, make the wardrobe or bedroom “aromatic.”
Crocs by the back door of course.

Lovely porch @Maddylovesshortcake

We have a rule that everyone keeps shoes in their own room and everyone has shelves within wardrobes for that... except me as I have a love of shoes and a dressing room, which makes me feel guilty sometimes, but not guilty enough to take it down 😂😬

We have the smallest hallway there is, not even room for a small shoe rack on the floor, so we’ve gone for ikea trones on the walls. They hold a surprising amount of shoes, as well as bags and boots. Looks like this in our hall, we’ve just stacked them higher.

Railwayroad · 08/01/2023 22:56

That looks good. I don’t really have space for it though sadly.

My wardrobe was an absolute mess, so last year I had a big clear out. OMG, the amount of footwear I’d forgotten I had!

Everything that needed binning was taken in a couple of bin bags ti the charity shop, marked as junk - as they get a bit of money per kilo of junk.

I didn’t really have much money to spend, so I bought these boxes (flat pack and easy to assemble). You can stack them in whatever combination suits your space best. I’m pleased with them - wardrobe looks tidier, shoes are easy to see and access.

They look good. Where are they from please?

I have a wooden blanket box in the hall & chuck all the least used ones in there.

toomuchlikemyusername · 16/01/2023 10:04

In our house everyone stores less frequently worn shoes in their wardrobes. Then we have a shelving unit in the garage for wellies and walking boots. In the hall we have a monks bench with a lifting seat where everyday, commonly worn shoes and trainers go.
We've also removed the kick board under the cupboards in the utility room to use the space under there for garden shoes/crocs etc.
