Should I change this mirror?

I've had this mirror for years, I really like the interlocking circles but I've always felt that the silver was a bit tacky. It's resin and I think I could paint it really easily, but would black be too harsh? We do have lots of silver photo frames and silver metal on the table lamp.

The sofa (not pictured) is cobalt blue and we have white shutters in the bay.

Or could white work? Or do I just leave it as is?

Should I change this mirror?

You have a lovely fireplace - I think white would look really fresh and light for the mirror

Trulyweird1 · 21/10/2022 17:35

I agree with white. That’s a lot of frame for black.

ImAvingOops · 21/10/2022 17:35

I like it and would leave it, assuming the silver isn't tarnished

akabluebell · 21/10/2022 17:35

I like it as it is, it seems balanced in the room.

Thank you. It's not silver metal, it's resin with silver and black paint on it, so it shouldn't tarnish.

Thanks. I feel like my mantelpiece dressing needs work though!

Yes that was my gut feeling too, and once it is black it would be hard to go back to a lighter colour.

It is a beautiful mirror and really suited to the location,

personally I would not change it, it is lovely, but I would go for white if you really want to update it.

MrsEricBana · 21/10/2022 17:42

I think chalky white so not too stark, def not black. Lovely room.

Yes agree - the mirror shape is really lovely but I find the dull metal look a little dated (sorry OP!)

Poppins2016 · 21/10/2022 17:45

Another vote for white.

Try Rust-Oleum all surface spray paint, I've always had really good results with it (just make sure you mask the mirror glass well and use the product outdoors).

The mirror is quite bold (and I think will be even when painted white) - I think you need to get rid of the stuff underneath it, maybe just have something on each end.

cravattwat · 21/10/2022 18:05

I'd go for white too or if you don't want that, a brass/gold colour.

SoupDragon · 21/10/2022 18:18

Personally, I think it will look cheap and horrible in white.

I'd be tempted to do string with metal leaf. Maybe copper.

CambsAlways · 21/10/2022 18:47

Go for white

FindingMeno · 21/10/2022 18:50

White.
I would leave the mantlepiece clear. The beautiful fireplace and the mirror are enough and the other things confuse the eye.
It is a lovely unusual mirror.

Penguinsaregreat · 21/10/2022 18:53

FistFullOfRegrets · 21/10/2022 18:54

I really like it as it is. I'm a really fussy pants and don't like many things, so my 'Oh I like that' was quite a surprise!

i wouldn't paint it.

JaninaDuszejko · 21/10/2022 18:54

Are you just painting the silver parts and keeping the black? Or painting the black as well? I'd be concerned that it'll seem to heavy if you paint it all the same colour. I think the PP is correct, if you paint it white it will look cheap and eighties. Changing the silver to a more golden (brass) colour will modernise it without changing the balance of the design.

Aria999 · 21/10/2022 18:57

I like it.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "string"?

Thanks everyone. The number of "it's fine as it is" comments are reassuring actually, perhaps not worth the risk of messing with it.

Something

it was a typo/autocorrect.

Belindabelle · 22/10/2022 13:06

I think I would leave the mirror as it is. White would be too stark. I would probably go for black but I do like dark and dramatic.

To dress your mantle I would group smaller items together. For example move the white candle next to the blue vase and place a small photograph to form a group of three. Nothing in the middle, then one larger item on the other side or another group of three different items. Play around with your favourite objects. A trailing plant might work on the right or something thin and tall.

Thank you. The white candle was just there because I was burning it for fragrance actually, wasn't ever meant to be part of the decor!
