What else should I do with my bedroom?

I moved house a few months ago, and this is my bedroom after painting and new carpet. Walls are Just Walnut, which in certain light is more pink than I expected.

I'm not sure I like it, but can't justify the cost to re-do it.

I need new furniture (apart from the bed, which is new).

I thought when I moved that I had a million ideas of what to do in terms of colour, furniture, decor, etc. But now I've lost the enthusiasm and gone blank.

I was thinking a picture ledge above my bed and an accent chair by the window?

How else can I liven it up, and make it a nicer space? Does it need more colour? If so, what?

Thanks!

It's a lovely room but it definitely needs something. A throw in a definite colour? Pictures and/or shelves on the walls? A lamp on the bedside table?

PutTheFruitInMyBellender · 25/06/2022 18:57

OP, that window is absolutely beautiful, which suggests that the room generally has good (Victorian) proportions and (hopefully) features.

What's under the carpet? Is it boards which could be sanded and sealed/waxed?

If you have space, a chair would be nice - but I'd go for a Victorian nursing chair type thing, rather than an 'accent' chair (but I don't like everything to match). I'd look at auctions for a walnut chest of drawers (probably Georgian, as they are more spindly and elegant on the whole) and either walnut or mahogany bedside tables (not ones which match anything else - more complementary than matching).

I'd also invest in some fabulous curtains - Sanderson/Wm Morris/Osborne & Little type fabric. Are there any seconds/mill shops near you, if you're on a tight budget? Ebay can also be good for this sort of thing.

I would also have pictures, but not matchy-matchy types. A few unusual ones (again, auctions - what's your taste?)

That's a stunning room ! So elegant. Some fresh greenery / plants would still keep it minimal but add interest

teezletangler · 25/06/2022 19:00

The walls are huge. It definitely needs some art!

Livedandlearned · 25/06/2022 19:03

A leafy fern would look lovely in that room

madeyourbed · 25/06/2022 19:07

The carpet has to stay. It's only been down a couple of months, and wasn't paid for by me! Grin

Would a picture ledge above the bed work then? If I go with a wooden tone, the same as the bed, what kind of frames on it?

A plant near the window instead of a chair? Or both?

White on the bed doesn't work. Try bedspread that tones with the "walnut" walls and carpet. A patterned one would be good.

Pippinbird · 25/06/2022 19:15

Beautiful window!

Scandi pattern paintwork would look amazing here.

I get that it sounds a bit ‘changing rooms’ but looks amazing and is a new trend.

floppybit · 25/06/2022 19:28

You need a colourful patterned bed linen, not white

PutTheFruitInMyBellender · 25/06/2022 19:31

Sanderson/Wm Morris for bed linen too! With white Oxford pillow cases.

Whatever you do, OP, don't go for matchy-matchy or feature walls or that kind of thing. If I were you, I'd find things that you really love; they will all fit together if you are guided by this, rather than by what's fashionable/what matches the walls. The walls are a great neutral which would make other things shine.

Can I have some suggestions for bed linen?

I wanted colour, but again, got fed up trying to pick.

I had this picked out originally, but wasn't sure

In your position, I would gather my budget up that I wanted to spend and blow the lot on some original, perhaps local, art. You can have fun touring galleries and exhibitions, meet some artists and buy some things that draw you and will make you happy every day. Worth a billion accent chairs and fancy curtains and then your colour scheme will find you.

Both!

You definitely need art. I love the window!

I like a nice floral bedspread but that might not go with the style of the room. A nice bedspread and cushions, possibly.

Can I ask where your carpet is from please, my mum wants one just like that.

gjatage · 25/06/2022 19:52

Gorgeous room & window. Agree with some colour, wall art, throw etc. Sconces?

bravotango · 25/06/2022 19:54

Wow beautiful room, I love the colour. I'd get a patterned blind (something like a blue or green stripe) and an accent chair, and a big plant.

It's just from a local family run shop. Sorry Blush

where is the shop?

Verbena87 · 25/06/2022 20:05

William Morris bedlinen, some big predominantly green botanical illustrations framed on the walls (and/or thomas Berwick bird engravings. And/or Samuel palmer prints), elegant walnut Edwardian furniture (mismatched but complementary, antique shop, smother with Cuprinol in the garden first!), warm toned vintage Turkish type rug.

ememem84 · 25/06/2022 20:14

I’d be putting a chair in the window space. And some art on the walls. If you’re sticking with white bedding I’d go bright colourful art. Or colourful throw and cushions on the bed. And a colourful chair. Find the right style of chair for you and the room and the. Have it recovered.

Trivester · 25/06/2022 20:18

I love it - it has really good bones. I’d go for a huge mirror leaning against one wall, change the light shade (the wood tone isn’t right with the other wood) and maybe a big plant. But I love the minimal effect.
