What else should I do with my bedroom?

I moved house a few months ago, and this is my bedroom after painting and new carpet. Walls are Just Walnut, which in certain light is more pink than I expected.

I'm not sure I like it, but can't justify the cost to re-do it.

I need new furniture (apart from the bed, which is new).

I thought when I moved that I had a million ideas of what to do in terms of colour, furniture, decor, etc. But now I've lost the enthusiasm and gone blank.

I was thinking a picture ledge above my bed and an accent chair by the window?

How else can I liven it up, and make it a nicer space? Does it need more colour? If so, what?

Thanks!

Beautiful room! I would keep the white bedding and add art above the bed, either different sized frames on a picture rail, or two or three big pieces. Also a big plant and a tall mirror.

Agree some plants would be good. I think the white bedding is fine but a throw or bedspread would be nice.
A shelf above the bed in the same wood tone.
I like the wall colour but if you really don’t, it seems a false economy to buy furniture and accessories to match. Is re-painting definitely out? I can understand that being the case if you’re paying a decorator...

William Morris bedlinen, some big predominantly green botanical illustrations framed on the walls (and/or thomas Berwick bird engravings. And/or Samuel palmer prints), elegant walnut Edwardian furniture (mismatched but complementary, antique shop, smother with Cuprinol in the garden first!), warm toned vintage Turkish type rug.

Your taste is v similar to mine!

Definitely not redecorating. Can't justify the best part of £500 again. And I wouldn't even attempt it myself due to the ceiling height.

I don't hate the colour, I'm just a bit uninspired by it, I guess. I'm sure with the right accessories, etc. i will be happy with it.

@PutTheFruitInMyBellender I am a velvet-smoking-jacketed Edwardian bachelor trapped in the body of a stroppy middle aged feminist, I think 😂

🤣 Same here!

The bed and side table look like they’re midcentury style. So I’d switch the light for something really dramatic that’s also midcentury style. A strong coloured retro artwork above the bed, maybe in shades of green and brown. A large ornament to stand on the drawers, again a strong colour. Heavy velvet curtains and a throw on the bed.

Thank you for this - just ordered as perfect for my newly redecorated bedroom!

Oh fab! I have got it too, and it's lovely IRL...

I agree with the pps who say to change the bedding and add plants. I think you need two or three plants, ferns are nice but I can't keep them alive. Peace lilies seem indestructible and provide a vibrant rich green.

dudsville · 28/06/2022 16:22

And I'd suggest you wait to put something on the walls until you know what you like. We moved in and put in neutral walls and carpets and freaked out a bit. OH is a photographer so we had lots of his work put on canvases. That was nice and eased the anxiety of the empty space, but it made it hard to see around and only years later are we getting on with what we really want.

Beautiful room.

For me thé scale of your furniture is slightly off. I would

  • raise the bed height (Amazon bed raisers)

  • add a picture rail from which to add art work (not crazy expensive)

  • very lush, heavy, naice curtain (Sanderson, etc) maybe just one side of the window

  • a dressing table with mirror or a small writing desk or nice chaise

  • warm rug

  • plant

  • two or more pillows on the bed and a rich contrast blanket or some such.

Lovely room.

I did my bedroom in shades of ivory, with palest blush (not too pink) touches (small ornaments, prints, ceramics) and brass. Bedding in French navy linen or botanic prints but subtle.

That wall opposite the bed is crying out for a large scale painting to stare at when you have a lie in or are poorly. (I'd choose an Oscar Kokoshka Cornish landscape print) Agree local gallery hunting could be fun. Your mid century furniture is nice and the light fixture is fine with that. The neutral walls and floor colours don't need changing but just add some colour on the bed: tones chosen once you've added the art. Bedside tables don't have to match and can pick up some colours there too. It's a lovely room proportion-wise.
