Where on Earth can I find good quality Sofas

Just as the subject said! I've heard horrible stories about DFS, SCS and now I'm hearing stories about Sofology who I was gonna go with and I just don't know what else to do. Where can I find good quality sofas that will last and won't break/wear out after a few months?

Stay away from Harvey's.

They use significantly better quality foam in the showroom from the one they sell you.

Mine was awful and despite them replacing them were misshapen again within weeks.

I had someone out to look at them-if you look at the stitching on the inner cushions the colour of the thread apparently shows which type of foam they used. Mine were the lowest quality.

Because I'm a grumpy sod, I went to the show room with them, on a Saturday afternoon and took all the removable bits with me. They were extremely fast in arranging a replacement, which interestingly are still in perfect condition now and I've had them 9 years.

They also tried to blame me being fat for the state of the thing so I asked why they weren't weighing all their customers before purchase.

greenbirdsong · 28/04/2022 13:33

I've had sofas from SCS and DFS and both were terrible. They squeaked and sagged and looked so worn after 18 months. Both brushed fabric.

They looked great in the showroom but didn't last in real life. For context there's only 2 regular sized adults and 1 child here. I dread to think how quick they would be ruined if I'd had more kids or pets!

I once called our DFS as apparently there was a 15yr guarantee on the frame, the guy told me they were all cheap chipboard and showed me when he took off the bottom lining. He implied "well, what did I expect", I told him I expect a sofa to last longer than 18 months!

My parents still have the same leather sofa from John Lewis that's 25yrs old - it's still comfy and still looks nice.

Tinkletwat · 28/04/2022 13:39

Sofa Sofa. Or if you have a local independent or small chain furniture place they would stock brands other than the ubiquitous DFS etc.

darlingdodo · 28/04/2022 13:44

Go and have a look in a Furniture Village - we've had 2 lots (2 separate living rooms) of their 'own label' ones and they are well made, no sagging of cushions. They also sell other good brands like G Plan, Duresta etc

muppamup · 28/04/2022 13:47

agree with ikea. you can buy washable covers, they don't break the bank, and you can replace parts easily if necessary (new cushions etc - not that I have needed to!).

TheDogsMother · 28/04/2022 13:50

Previously I would have agreed with M & S but I have had a terrible experience with them that they wouldn't take responsibility for. We've had to spend £££s getting an upholsterer to put in further filling to stop the thing sagging. The problem started with a matter of weeks of delivery. The quality is definitely what it was.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 28/04/2022 13:54

The problem with people suggesting the retailer who provided them with a sofa 20 years ago that’s still looking good, is that in most places the quality has had a massive slide in recent years.

Whitney168 · 28/04/2022 13:56

I was determined I was going to get Darlings of Chelsea sofas, but when we went to try them the ones we liked were so deep seated (and I am fairly tall, with my length between hip and knee) and sloping backed that I had to concede they weren't compatible with husband's dodgy back - so just a cautionary tale that even though they look gorgeous, make sure you try them first if considering that.

JaninaDuszejko · 28/04/2022 14:04

Definitely not made.com, I bought an (admittedly cheap) click clack sofa bed from there for theplayroom and it has not survived at all, it's 4 years old and I've been wanting to replace it for about 3 years. Meanwhile our IKEA cheap as chips Klippan is still going strong after 20 years.

For real quality though buy vintage or antique and reupholster if needed. I inherited an Edwardian chaise longue that looked good as new once we reupholstered it and recently bought a 60yo Danish leather sofa that is in fabulous condition. Both will last longer than me.

Another vote for Sofasofa

We’ve just ordered from them again after our old ones lasted for ages. We’ve never had a problem with quality and the customer service is excellent.

Agree with IKEA. We have had our IKEA sofas for 12 years and DD was 3 when we bought them so they lived through plenty of jumping on etc. They are still going strong. I'm considering replacing the covers in the next six months or so. Covers are hardwearing and can be washed in an ordinary washing machine - SO useful.

pinkysmum · 28/04/2022 14:45

We've currently got 2 sofas on order so have been the search process recently. I looked at DFS and SCS but didn't see anything I liked. I don't know if you have one near you - but Stokers was massive and seemed good quality. We went to a few independent furniture shops near us and they seemed the best. Bought from a smallish business in the end. You just have to keep googling and find all the small local places and there may be just what you want there.

ladygindiva · 28/04/2022 14:55

My parents bought an m & s sofa, it's really lovely, and approx 5 years on it still looks and feels like new.

woodhill · 28/04/2022 15:01

G Plan but not sure if they still exist

orangeisthenewpuce · 27/04/2022 19:23

Oh no, I'm currently thinking of buying one from sofology? Are they a bad idea?

We bought our sofa with Sofology 6+ years ago and it's still in great condition. We're moving so looking for a new style - headed straight there as we were so impressed from before. Unfortunately they don't have the style we're looking for this time but wouldn't have hesitated if they had!

cherrytreecottage · 28/04/2022 15:25

Out of interest, anyone used sofa-club.com?

We looked at sofa.com and agree they're beautiful but slightly out of our price range. Sofa-club had the similar style we wanted at a much more affordable price, but assumed in reality they'd be crap quality. We visited a stockist and were surprised at how good the sofa looked; but not sure how well it would wear. The old saying of "you get what you pay for" springs to mind!

uggmum · 28/04/2022 15:26

I tried the sofas at 'snug' and they were very comfortable.

Looked very well made. They are on line but they have a local pop up in my area. I was impressed with them.

In the past I have had sofas from 'sofa sofa'. They are an on line company. But I was really happy with mine from there. The last one was great. I had 18 years use I'm out of it and I gave it away to a friend. It was in very good condition.

I have a Barker and Stonehouse sofa now. It's 4 years old and I don't think the quality was worth the price tag.

whosaidth1 · 28/04/2022 15:34

OK I'm seeing a lot of votes for Sofa Sofa and Sofa.com (currently having a browse now)

Also I'm seeing some advice to check out local/smaller businesses (Will def try this, we plan to go furniture shopping this weekend and will include this in our plans)

Can I get honest opinions on these sofas please?

sofasofa.co.uk/products/grosvenor-2-seater-sofa-pavilion-cream

Context: Its for a formal lounge (think "a place for when grown ups only" lol) I'd probs get a 3 seater and a 2 seater.

For our other lounge which is like an open plan kitchen/dining/lounge situation I'm thinking something of this style? What do we think?

Next ! Brilliant sofas and really last

I was going to say avoid Next. Ours are only 9 years old and the covers look shocking, and I have had to restuff the cushions. (no small children or pets here).

NameChanged2022 · 28/04/2022 15:43

Oak Furnitureland. We've had beds from them which are over 15 years old so we decided to go with their sofas this time around. We haven't been disappointed!

notacooldad · 28/04/2022 15:49

I know you have ruled out Dfs but our first one lasted 16 years before we changed it as we had a room reshuffle. Our current Dfs one has lasted 13 years and we are going to change it soon for the same reason as before. It is in good condition to sell.
The setter in our middle room has lasted years ( over a decade, maybe 15 years, not sure) and that was from SCS.
My husband is a large unit and none of the settes have broke! They've also survived the toddler to teen years and beyond. They are reasonably priced and have always been good quality.
I'm not unique, my friends and colleagues have similar stories about these companies.

soupmaker · 28/04/2022 16:00

Another vote for IKEA. We bought our sofas 15 years ago as a stop gap before splurging once the kids were bigger. Still love them. Easy to replace covers and perfectly solid despite being abused by toddlers!
