Have striped stair carpets had their day?

We think we might go down this route. Will it be really, really dated very soon?
No plans to sell.

I like them. I don’t think stripes ever go out of style.

StressyMcStressFace · 09/04/2022 16:44

I'm not a fan and never have been but if you like them does it matter if they're the latest thing or not?

LubaLuca · 09/04/2022 16:46

I don't think they're 'in fashion' any more, but this is your home - buy whatever you like most, anything else will be for who's benefit?

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 09/04/2022 16:48

If you're not planning to sell you should always just go with the thing you like the best. I would say it probably does look a bit dated now, but not hideously so. Painted stairs with a sisal runner with a striped edge seems more fashionable.

But again, go with the thing you like.

I have one and I had one in my last house too. And I've got no plans to change it because they don't show dirt!! I briefly rented a house with velvety plush stair carpets in different colours for each floor (tall thin townhouse) & they show every bit off fluff and lint!

Aside from having no carpet (which I think is a current trend for staircases) I think stripes or at least some kind of pattern are best as a low maintenance option! If you love hoovering or have an exceptionally clean and lint free household maybe go for something more current carpet wise, I'm not sure stripes are totally out dated yet though, especially if you don't want to use the stairs for impact / colour / to make a design statement.

ItsPrettyObvious · 09/04/2022 16:57

Buy what you want. Fuck everyone else

ArabeI · 09/04/2022 17:04

I like them, and agree with Empresso.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 09/04/2022 17:09

:) Well that's a mixed response!
No carpet or just a runner wouldn't look right I don't think.
Not worried about being bang up to date but don't want to be embarrassingly out of date.
This was just a final sanity check. Thanks :)

I think they still look very nice and they have been around at least 20 years cos I remember a friend of mine used them in her house (i'm in a flat so no opportunity) If YOU like them other people can fxxk off!

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 09/04/2022 17:18

I love them. Here's ours. The stripes hide an inordinate volume of dust and 'bits' so we only have to hoover it once a fortnight.

What a lovely hallway Dennis! Ours won't be half as spectacular. We'll have some brighter colours in ours as our walls are paler.

@ImplementingTheDennisSystem yours look lovely .

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 09/04/2022 17:29

Haha. They don’t hide the dirt if you’ve not hoovered them for months!!! I have stripy and I love them. My stripes have almost disappeared 😳 I love it when they are hoovered! I think it’s a classic look. Not really fashion.

Empressofthemundane · 09/04/2022 18:10

I think stripes are pretty safe. It’s probably the colour you choose that could date more than the pattern.

Generally speaking stripes and plaid are truly classic and do not date. (Polka dots too, but they always feel twee to me.) Floral patterns and geometrics are much more likely to be tied to short trends.

A wool carpet seems to be a British classic to me. You are using local materials, milled and manufactured here in a time honoured manner. That said I do like sisal too.

icklekid · 09/04/2022 18:12

Yes I still love our stripy stairs and would
Happily include in a new house now. If you like them go for it!

OverByYer · 09/04/2022 18:13

I’ve had striped stairs for about 10 yrs, I still like them ( as others said don’t ever loook dirty) my sons for some reason hate it and think they’re naff. IDGAF.

Tlollj · 09/04/2022 18:17

As long as they pattern match going round corners. I like them.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 09/04/2022 18:34

I'm enjoying all the love for striped carpets. No corners to turn Tlollj but it's going to have to be perfect for the autistics in the house.

I’m not a fan, but I don’t really like carpet in general. Selling or not won’t make a difference as it’s pretty cheap to change a stair carpet. If you like it then go for it! I can’t imagine any of my friends caring what we have on our stairs, and wouldn’t be bothered if they didn’t like them. It’s just you that has to live with it!!

Tlollj · 09/04/2022 19:11

Yeah mine would have to be perfect too. I tend to go plain in home decor or a random pattern. But as I say I like them. What colour are you thinking?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 09/04/2022 19:35

We'll do the landing too Qwill too so not going to be cheap.
It's a mix of burgundy, cream and grey Tlollj Everything we could find in plain was boring or looked too office like or pub like. This has a balance.

@ImplementingTheDennisSystem
You've stolen my hall!!!
Same carpet and colours on walls 🤣
Whilst a runner is lovely, it's a pain to keep clean, all the fiddly side bits.

LolaStrange · 09/04/2022 20:02

I like the idea, and the PPs pics. But what happens at the top of the stairs? I wouldn't want striped carpet on all the floors up there

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 09/04/2022 20:02

Very nice Tretchikoff. If I had the right house then the bars would be lovely.
