Help me make these wardrobes look better

I live in a rented house, so am very limited in what I can change.

Over and around my bed I have built in wardrobes, similar to in the photo but white and old fashioned. I'd like to find a way to hide them, I thought of using voiles or fairy lights hanging down, unsure how I'd attach them though, but was thinking Command hooks.

Any thoughts?

While I'm at it, in the bathroom there are textured flowery tiles as a border, does anyone know of anything that will disguise them? Painting them is not an option, it would have to be something easily removed when I move out.

TIA

Washi Tape for the border! It's a patterned Japanese sticky tape.

Imherenowandthen · 03/04/2022 23:45

I’ve added photos of the tiles. I’m not sure washi tape will cover them.

So the flowery bit is 5 cm high, and including the decorative bit below it it’s 6.5 or 7 cm.

You are probably right!

I think you can buy some kind of peel off paint to paint on glass? Maybe try and get some to paint over the floral motives in the tiles.

Imherenowandthen · 04/04/2022 00:31

Thanks I’ll look for that!

Google tile stickers. They make things that will work for your bathroom. I cannot get the link to work.

Imherenowandthen · 04/04/2022 02:57

I’ve been looking at them, but they were the wrong size and didn’t look like they’d stock on textured tiles.

One of the problems I also have with the wardrobes is I can’t have a bedside lamp without the cable being in front of the drawers and getting in the way. There is a hole to feed the cable through to a plug inside the wardrobes but the hole is too small for a plug to pass through. I bought a lamp that charges by usb, but it’s not bright enough to read by.

There's really nothing you can do in either situation if you're renting and not able to make proper changes. You'll just have to live with it, it's not too bad!

Imherenowandthen · 06/04/2022 20:22

Thanks! I hope there’s something I can do though!

Can you remove the plug, push the wire through the hole and then rewire the plug?

Sgtmajormummy · 06/04/2022 20:31

What about a “mosquito net” canopy over the bed? They spread out from a hoop shape which you could suspend a bit further down the bed than central. That way the canopy would keep the wardrobe out of sight but still let you open the doors. Fairy lights and a head torch for reading. Grin
Not much you can do with the bathroom tiles. I had similar in my 1995 kitchen. They’re very much of that era. Luckily you don’t spend much time in there.

Sgtmajormummy · 06/04/2022 20:35

Hmmm. Not a great look…

A clip on reading light on the headboard?

I’ve never done that 😳 probably should Google it! Can you do that with any plug?
OP posts:

The problem is either the lamps need charging which I always forget or the cable is trailing. Believe it or not there is no plug behind the bed, just ones in each wardrobe on the sides of the bed!

That is awful. 😂 Not sure a mosquito net would work in hiding the wardrobes really 🤔

If the bedroom is big enough put the bed on another wall and cover the lot with net curtains or similar.
If another room is big enough for a double bed use that and put a child in this room or use it as an office if you need one. Still keep clothing in the wardrobe but you won’t have to look at it.
Whatever you do with the tiles be careful of staining the grout.

Rosebuud · 06/04/2022 21:20

Stick glass mosaic tiles round the tiles, you can peel them off when you go.

These,

But these are identical and much cheaper.

It’s not big enough unfortunately, there’s barely a foot at the end of the double bed when it’s in place between the wardrobes. The second bedroom is tiny.

Thanks, that’s an idea, if they’ll peel off again. The Etsy ones are £3.19 for 1 cm2, not cheaper I think.

Also the second bedroom has built in wardrobes too 😩

That’s a shame.
What about a curtain pole in front of the wardrobes and have the curtains parted and tie backs attached to the wardrobe doors
It would look nice unless you were in bed and then you’d be looking up at the wardrobes. Although you could do what Barry and Yvonne did to their chalet on hi de hi and blue tack wall paper over them.

😂 blutak!

I don’t really want to drill to attach a curtain rail. It would be better if I could attach something with Command strips or hooks.
