What colour sofa’s go with this carpet?!

Hi All!

We have chocolate brown carpets thoroughout our house which I hate, but that’s a story for another day and we are currently sofa shopping. Unfortunately, nothing seems to look right with this flipping carpet Confused. Our current sofas are a lightish grey and seem to stick out like a sore thumb.

Any advice/opinions on what colour sofas would compliment this carpet would be greatly appreciated.

We currently have a dark/emerald green feature wall and matching throws/cushions but thought a green sofa may be too restrictive if we wanted to redecorate further down the line. Ideally I was thinking something neutral-ish but at my wits end at this point so open to any ideas Grin. Not sure if the fact I don’t like the carpet is clouding my judgement!

Photo of said carpet attached- hit me with your suggestions! Smile

Honestly yeah that’s bad, I’d replace rhe carpet or cover it with a huge cream rug so it couldn’t be seen, no sofa will go with it.

MuchTooTired · 17/03/2022 22:20

A blush pink works really well with brown carpets.

No it doesn’t. Pink sofa and brown carpets would be awful.
Ylvamoon · 17/03/2022 22:22

Chocolate & Cream is a classic....

EezyOozy · 17/03/2022 22:24

Burnt orange ?

inappropriateraspberry · 17/03/2022 22:25

Cream, or go for the 60s/70s vibe and go for orange and/or purple!

EezyOozy · 17/03/2022 22:26

Farrow and Ball have a chocolatey brown coloured paint and they show suggested colour contrasts, if you scroll to the bottom

Cream
White
Blue

CollyFleur · 17/03/2022 22:26

Or bottle green? (Dull, not bright emerald). Lots of plants and seize the 70s vibe
Navy?
Teal?
The carpets are pretty horrid though (sorry)... I think I'd be wanting to prioritise changing then rather than buy a sofa to match / complement them.

This is a good call. Pick a rug or cushions in the third colour of the scheme.
WhatIsThisPlease · 17/03/2022 22:28

Buy a sofa that you really like then replace the carpet to go with the sofas.

As soon as you can.

DrCoconut · 17/03/2022 22:33

We've got pretty much that exact carpet (for now) and a cream sofa (with childproof throws on it 🤣)

Blackmagicqueen · 17/03/2022 22:35

Red, blue, green

wintersdreams · 17/03/2022 22:53

Thanks everyone! I’m glad it’s not just me who thinks the carpets awful. Alas my other half picked them and loves them Hmm (I wanted a grey carpet or laminate flooring but he was paying so got the final say!). It’s not even been down 6 months so replacing isn’t really an option.

That link is really helpful, thank you @hassletassle

I also thought cream. I’m very clumsy so hopefully I wouldn’t ruin them. If I got a cream sofa I’d then have a good excuse to get a cream rug to cover the god awful carpets too Wink

Navy or Teal might be worth a look too . I do love those colours. The other half had precisely suggested those and I automatically vetoed them in my head because as you can tell, we have very differing opinions on styles ha!

Maybe a full on 70s vibe is the way to go Grin

Maybe you could donate the carpet (rolled up with OH inside it!) to a charity & replace it. I'd rather replace the carpet & sit on the floor!!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 17/03/2022 23:06

God my husband is like this. Anything lighter than dark brown or black and he says "it'll get filthy and need replacing, we're not having it." I compromised on the stair and landing carpet a couple of years ago but I've never been quite happy with it as it's just slightly too dark for me. I've put my foot down on my son's bedroom carpet and said I don't want my home to look like a rental flat thanks and we are NOT getting dark brown carpet! I said he could have bare floorboards if he wanted to sand them instead, but I'm not having a nasty dark brown or dark grey carpet.

Orchidsonthetable · 18/03/2022 03:40

I’m not going to lie op I’m really surprised that is a new carpet. I thought it was really old. It looks saggy in places and a bit dirty. (Sorry) I think everyone assumed it was really old hence why the suggestions to change. I’d be giving my husband the side eye over that.

@CurlyhairedAssassin, I don’t understand his thought process that if a carpet gets dirty it needs replacing or buying one to hide dirt. You just have it cleaned. The carpets get the same level of dirty irrelevant of colour..😳

NurseBernard · 18/03/2022 03:52

Wow, that carpet is bad. We had one that colour in the 70s.

And a dark green emerald feature wall? If you can’t get rid of the carpet, then maybe consider ditching the feature wall.

Any colour you consider had the fight with both the carpet and the wall….

wintersdreams · 18/03/2022 10:15

Believe it or not, that photo is from the day it was fitted! Hmm Ditching the feature wall might be an idea and getting lots of huge rugs for throughout the house The living room is definitely due a repaint…

Honestly, I could live with the carpet on the stairs/bedroom but it really is doing my head in downstairs.

Anyway, thank you for the suggestions- a cream sofa is currently a strong contender Smile

The carpet does indeed look quite baggy and also very thin, perhaps you should wear some stompy boots and deliberately wear patches over it. Maybe drop an iron too?!

I’d go taupe and blush pink, like the first suggestion in the F&B link. But honestly, only get stuff that will match with future carpets cos not very much will make it look better

Orchidsonthetable · 18/03/2022 10:54

Did he fit it himself op? Just find the cheapest carpet he could and fit it himself? Or did you complain? A carpet should be stretched. That one looks like it’s not fitted right at all.

sunshinesupermum · 18/03/2022 11:06

I'd go for a burnt orange sofa.

ScribblingPixie · 18/03/2022 11:10

Leather.

inappropriateraspberry · 18/03/2022 18:51

It doesn't look like a great quality carpet and not fitted well at all!

feministqueen · 19/03/2022 09:08

@wintersdreams I have very light cream sofas and 13 years on they're still like new even with 2 kids! So don't be put off by the colour. Mine are textured with quite a strong weave so they're great for scrubbing clean!
