I've had a fake "fireplace" opening created in our lounge. So it's just blank, and the carpet runs into it currently - no tiled hearth.

It has as wood mantle shelf.

WHAT ON EARTH AM I GOING TO PUT INTO IT?!

please - suggestions welcome.

It can't be a plant, we have house rabbit...

So far I've got a large hurricane lamp, with candle, but I'd love some better inspiration.

Any suggestions please? And better still, please show me yours?!

Tia

I'd create a tiled hearth and put in an electric stove, I love the Everhot Electric Stove and think it's gorgeous. Saving up to get one while I decide what colour I want.

Illputtheminapie · 01/03/2022 23:10

Do you need it to be a real chimney breast for the heat proofing though? Mine is just inch thick plywood all around.
That sounds lovely and that Everhot one is dreamy!! Smile

I would tile the interior on all sides coming out to make a hearth. Then in the gap, depending on style/taste/budget:
Lots of fat church candles at varying heights
Fire basket filled with fairy lights
A basket of logs
Little stove

We have an antique fire screen covering a rarely used fireplace as it’s ugly and dirty when not in use.

I’ve put a plug in electric woodburner. It’s only for show but it’s actually really handy when it gets chilly - I paid about £50 for it from B&Q

Ours has a basket of duplo in it 🙈 maybe not the look you're going for.

Grin We have a fairly ugly gas fire that we were considering taking out, but that's pretty much what I think would happen to the space if we did! not helpful

I have 2 unused fireplaces downstairs. Would appreciate feedback as we have photographer coming next week to take pics as putting house on the market.

I hid the whole fireplace with a massive leaner mirror. I thought I would do it for a temporary fix but I love it - it's now there to stay.

Illputtheminapie · 02/03/2022 17:10

Love these thank you! The electric burner isn't a bad shout. I'll do a bit of searching.
Otherwise I'm leaning towards the candles/lanterns I think.
I'm going to paint the inside a fun colour so I don't want to screen it, although I loved seeing yours as I'd forgotten they existed!

I’ve filled mine with giant pine cones and put a string of flickering flame lights in. Looks quite cosy!

Definitely take the wood out of the second one! That looks terrible. Can you light them for the photos? And remove the knickknacks?

@Flexitarian that's super looking! Very effective.

We have one we sometimes light in winter. In the summer I fill it with giant fir-cones.

Mossstitch · 02/03/2022 17:26

I once filled mine with a winerack as couldn't afford to put in it what I wanted (😕an aga, it was in the kitchen) but I like the photo of one filled with logs, that would be an easy and cheap solution.

meow1989 · 02/03/2022 17:41

We have logs in the (fake) fire and fairy lights entwined for cosy evenings. I'd grab a couple of big tiles or slabs of eg granite for in front if I were you.

Like the first one but not keen on the logs which seem very cold and harsh looking, something a bit warmer and more welcoming would be my thoughts.
52andblue · 02/03/2022 18:16

@fitat50 in f/p 1 I'd remove all except lion & unicorn plaque - lean that against back of f/p & put plain church candles either side?. F/p 2 I think the wood is fine but again remove all nicknames- plain church candles only.

Love that! Mine is very similar to yours and has fairy lights in but the cones make a massive difference! I shall be copying that.
FitAt50 · 03/03/2022 10:43

Thank you for the advice. I will remove the nicknacks and attempt to get the wood out this morning, wish me luck :-)

Mundra · 05/03/2022 15:33

We have logs filling ours. I'm not that keen (done by person before us) but I'm too worried about disturbing the spider haven it surely is by removing the logs!
In a previous house, the space was large enough to put a bookcase.

longtompot · 05/03/2022 15:45

We used to have an electric wood burner. It was a Dimplex one and we bought their fake slate hearth to go under it. It was really effective and we usually just used the flame setting with no heat as it was quite pretty. We sold it as we have the real thing now, but for a good 10 years we were happy with the fake one.

FitAt50 · 05/03/2022 15:47

Couldn't face taking the wood out so softened it with some lights and removed the nickname

I put giant fir cones in my fireplace in the summer, but I like the fairy lights as an addition. We light fires sometimes in the Winter. (properly lined etc chimney).

electrocautery · 05/03/2022 16:01

What about placing a bioethanol fire in the cavity? No need for a chimney?

@FitAt50 from the look of your fireplaces your house is going to be amazing and full of character I wouldn’t worry about the photos!
