Looks beautiful Shock I'm always amazed at what people cover up in houses

0blio · 09/10/2021 19:25

That's amazing, so beautiful Smile

toothgenie · 09/10/2021 19:25

This is looks amazing , love the tiles.
It's so satisfying isn't it.

bettyfloormop · 09/10/2021 19:27

Sadly I think period fireplaces fell out of favour in the mid 20th century, and were considered a bit naff.

Luckily for us most of them seem to have just been painted to buggery or covered, not totally ripped out thankfully.

That's nice 😂

Great job! It looks lovely.

My Mum did her back in in the 70s removing all the fireplaces. Literally slipped her disc. It was quite a botch job too.

Perdy45 · 15/10/2021 17:30

Stunning!

JellyfishandShells · 15/10/2021 18:48

When we were having some work done on our house, the builder discovered a whole load of fireplace fittings like grates and mantle supports plus a lovely copper fire screen ‘walled up’ at the back of the understairs cupboard. It had been sealed off and just looked like a dead end.

The fireplaces had been removed in the dining room and the bedrooms by a previous owner who had done a lot of structural work ( much of it dodgy ) in the late 80s . We still can’t work out why all the iron work was hidden like that - builder bravely checked there were no bodies as well !

I used a grate for the remaining, non functioning but pretty , front room fireplace and gave some to neighbour who was restoring more of their fireplaces.

FWBNC · 15/10/2021 18:51

It's lovely!! Exactly what you'd pray was behind there!!!

bettyfloormop · 15/10/2021 20:24

Thanks all.

We had a go at the one in our current dining room, unfortunately it had been butchered, so have bought a 'new' one which looks as if it will fit the space perfectly Smile

Brilliant

Loveitloveitloveit · 17/10/2021 17:59

Gorgeous. Our dining room fireplace has sadly been destroyed- no remains of the original just a naff 80s mantelpiece stuck over it- so I’m very jealous Envy

bettyfloormop · 17/10/2021 18:41

@Loveitloveitloveit oh no.. but you can pick up salvaged fireplaces on Marketplace for not too much. Could you put a new one in?

Loveitloveitloveit · 17/10/2021 18:43

I’ll have a look @bettyfloormop. I’m trying to restore as many original features as I can, but everything is covered in a million layers of white paint

Andante57 · 17/10/2021 18:46

It looks really beautiful.

wonkylegs · 17/10/2021 18:51

You've done a wonderful job, well done

Letsrunabath · 20/10/2021 09:33

Both of these restorations are beautiful, bet you can’t wait for cold nights to light them.

bettyfloormop · 20/10/2021 09:40

@Letsrunabath sadly they are just for decoration!

I'd much rather people covered up things like this and beautiful staircases, than rip them out. Beautiful work @bettyfloormop
longtompot · 20/10/2021 10:46

I meant to say, same here @namechangerforthisconfessionn but I guess fashions and tastes change

Just saw the beautiful green tiles when you opened up the surround. Were they salvagable @bettyfloormop?
