What to do with this space (pics) behind the sofa?

We have quite a large but awkward living room and after much moving of furniture have finally settled on a setup that works but has left a void between the sofa back and window and a rather sad empty corner. I was thinking a small desk and nice chair in the corner but it would be more for show as I like to work in the kitchen. I think it's too small for an armchair although that would be more practical as we can pull it forward when we have guests. Any thoughts?

How about a window seat with built-in storage? People often make them with Kallax units from ikea.

bonfireheart · 29/07/2021 17:40

That little square white table doesn't look right there, I'd replace with big floor lamp and a few plants.

bongbigboobingbongbing · 29/07/2021 17:40

What about a drinks trolley? Oliver Bonas do a beautiful one. Or a corner table that you can put flowers or a lamp on.

BasiliskStare · 29/07/2021 17:42

Could you fit an arm chair in if you moved the little white desk ?

lemmeavabru · 29/07/2021 17:47

Concur with the poster who said plants in the corner. The plant potss with stilts and long growing ones. (Sorry don't know the proper name for it).
Faux or real ones

hifidelityhi · 29/07/2021 17:56

Sorry should have said - the white desk isn't a permanent fixture we've just moved and didn't have anywhere else for it so waiting for it to be collected by someone local. Plants are a great idea but the corner you can't see already has a lovely big plant in a raised pot so don't really want another one.

I would put a console table between the back of the sofa and the window, photo frames on it. Push sofa back so table doesn’t get accidentally jigged about.

Then move your big leafy plant into this corner that’s getting light and is bright. Alternatively, lamp and side table as sofa will have been pushed back.

I have a similar corner, with a large basket which contains throws and blankets in the winter, newspapers in the summer. That’s in front of a floor lamp with a large arced arm that sheds light for the newspaper reader. I have w coffee table in front, but if I didn’t I’d definitely have a side table. Need somewhere to put tea / drink.

I lovely big vase and beautiful faux flowers!

Bluesheep8 · 29/07/2021 18:19

A corner bookshelf. With books on.

elaeocarpus · 29/07/2021 19:46

Console Table behind sofa with decorative things or lamps , and push sofa up to it

Corner says xmas tree spot to me! Maybe a bookshelf/lamps/plants?

A stylish cat tree, and if you don't have a cat you'll need one of those too.

lannistunut · 29/07/2021 19:57

Don't fill it for the sake of it, keep it empty as space is lovely.

Or get some beautiful houseplants in there somehow.

Or of course lovely bookshelves if you have lots of books (do not ever arrange your books in rainbow order, this is monstrous) but not bookshelves with just random crap.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/07/2021 20:00

Definitely a console table behind the sofa.

blakeway45 · 29/07/2021 20:03

A drinks trolley and a plant!

JessieOh · 29/07/2021 20:09

In my house, that would become the corner where the clothes airer lived, (oh how I long for a futility room) but that might not be in line with the look you're going for?

namcybotwinbloom · 29/07/2021 20:46

I can't work the room out can we have a little diagram please?

trickyex · 29/07/2021 22:33

Another vote for console table ideally with table lamps on and plants or a floor lamp in the corner where the white desk is.

Ideally 3 cats for maximum impact.

A statue or wall art

Yes I agree, wouldn’t it work to have the sofa against the window rather than a gap?

It might make more sense with a diagram, I can’t really work it out from the pictures

hifidelityhi · 29/07/2021 22:47

Picture attached Grin not quite managed the scale and door positioning is a bit off but you hopefully get the idea.

Window is quite big and a bit too low to have a piece of furniture in front of it but I do like the idea of a console table so might see if I can find anything to fit. I do also like the sense of space when it's empty so conscious of not overfilling it. The big wall behind the large sofa is definitely in need of some artwork so something low and pretty might be better. Love idea of a bar but DH is quite anti anything retro or Art Deco style which most seem to be.

I'm thinking a lovely table and statement flowers might be the most simple but effective.

Some great ideas than you and I'm off to Pinterest some of them. Hopefully a decision will be made and I'll post a photo once done.

How about a modern sideboard along the wall where the white desk is? Then you could decorate it?
Like these ideas. I'd put a plant, a nice lamp and some drinks or pics on it.

Are you putting curtains on the window? If so, then I don't think I would put a console table in behind the sofa.

Nuggetnugget · 29/07/2021 22:54

Great to get the floor plan

I think a curved floor lamp would look really great there. A big silver one would look great with the navy.

LawnFever · 29/07/2021 22:56

Just to be a pest Smile I’d swap the two seater sofa for where you have the tv, put the tv where the arm chair is and the arm chair in front of the window.

That way there’s more space as you come into the room, it could be the layout not to scale but it feels from that the sofa is right as you come in?

Then I’d move your big plant into the current empty corner Smile
