What to do with this space (pics) behind the sofa?

We have quite a large but awkward living room and after much moving of furniture have finally settled on a setup that works but has left a void between the sofa back and window and a rather sad empty corner. I was thinking a small desk and nice chair in the corner but it would be more for show as I like to work in the kitchen. I think it's too small for an armchair although that would be more practical as we can pull it forward when we have guests. Any thoughts?

I’d it was us

  • a large sideboard to hold all our board games
  • a drinks cabinet
  • large bookshelf full of books

I'm just here for all the great ideas that PPs have suggested, as we have a similar sad empty space in our living room.

And Grin to JessieOh's futility room - my utility room often feels very futile!

@LawnFever that would be better I agree but all our tv points are on the left hand wall and I really don't want trailing wires or to have to get walls replastered. We really have tried every other option and this works best plus the room is bigger than the plan suggests so you're not walking i into the sofa.

We have a whole wall of floor to ceiling cupboards and shelves where the tv is so not short of storage hence happy to have something purely for aesthetic purposes in the corner.

If it's for aesthetic purposes then is a drinks cabinet the solution? You need to have space around it so it wouldn't look out of place and then the lamp one of the PP suggested too?

in my house, it would be a bookshelf. because we never have enough storage space for books (and they are decorative) so every available bit of wall has shelves.

failing that, an tall corner cabinet / shelves that could have decorative 'objects' on - vase etc.

like this but taller if possible

What about a console table with two footstools underneath. Handy for extra seats or just chilling and also give a bit of a contrast if you go with a different fabric.

I'm going to be full of ideas OP - waiting to refurb our house here and am all over boards these days looking for inspiration.
I think you'll need a bit of furniture to balance out all the shelving at the other end of the room. Is it white shelving? What style is the coffee table?

Actually yes, a pp is right. What window dressing are you going to have behind the two seater?

If floor tile ceiling curtains, your choices will be limited. And, actually, I’d probably switch things round a bit more: put the armchair in that empty corner with a footstool, side table, lamp etc. You want to be able to open and close the curtains easily, and they’ll hopefully be nice to look at.

If you’re having Roman shades/blinds, you can push the sofa up to a console table. The window is low, but you’ll find something that height. By the time you’ve put whatever on the table, it’ll be fine. Just make sure you can reach the shade to raise/lower it. Or get a motorised thing (inexpensive).

The wall opposite, with the TV, will be busy if it’s floor to ceiling cupboards and shelves plus the TV. Artwork behind the three seater. Agree the rest of the room should be simple and uncluttered. What will you do with the wall the door is in? Keep it blank?

I would have a complete wall of floor length curtains in my favourite fabric. They would soften the corners of your room, without the need to add another piece of furniture.

In our 'awkward window corner' I have a cabinet on an angle, which has a glass front and hold DH's music memorabilia. I usually have a big bunch of flowers in a tall vase on top of it. We've got big floor to ceiling curtains so it doesn't take up too much room.

You want a very ‘occasional’ chair - something totally contrasting to your other seating, wicker or lightweight or a pouffe or something like that. Along with an impracticality small side table.

Personally I’d have a low display bookcase or cabinet, just for pretty things. And a floor lamp that’s beautiful. And very luxurious curtains.
