Naff things in other people's houses (Tongue in Cheek)

I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

Artificial grass in the garden- I can’t stand it, it looks horrific.
Any motivational phrases or affirmations on walls
Little wooden signs for example ‘home is where the heart is’ or ‘this house runs on love’ etc
Fake brick wallpaper

StevieNix · 26/06/2021 20:53

Also pretty much everything they sell in the home/gift shop in center parcs!

DXBMermaid · 26/06/2021 21:02

I find placing your sofas and arm chairs next to each other strange. Somtimes you see pics of a lounge and it ends up looking like a Dr's waiting room. I'd always try to create either a bif of an L shape or have them facing each other rather then just along the walls.

Look, I’m not going to pretend I think Lladrò figurines look wonderful, just because I’m working class.

Fibre optic Christmas trees - the ones that glow different colours.

Culinary Concepts do some fairly tasteful cutlery and glass ice-bucket bowls that I covet ..........................

And they have utter shite like this Crane Bottle Holder £399.20 Bargain.

A house without books is scary. What do people do if they don’t read?
Read and post on mumsnet threads like this? I’m guilty of this but do like to read books too, although I seem to be buying more than reading at the moment.

I'm an avid reader but I tend to use the library.

I always find it odd when people judge others by the appearance/ lack of books in their home.

Personally I think books look ugly all lined up so I put them in cupboards. It's a sensory thing, I find clutter almost disturbing.

Did you prefer DVDs to be displayed too? Or is it just reappearance of being well read that you are attached to?

TheTuesdayPringle · 26/06/2021 23:18

I'm a keen reader, but posts like this make me cringe.

You might read a lot but you either don't seem to have a clue about life's options, or you're being faux confused in some kind of egregiously humble bragging way.
Ugh.

Astro turf —— urgh!
After spending a fortune of time and money on grass…..bring on the turf! I’m so over it

That's very narrow minded and presumpuous. I have books. Probably close to 1000 of them. They are in a room on their own where you are unlikely to ever go, as a visitor. You won't see them all on display if you are in the sitting room, the kitchen, the dining room or the hall. Don't jump to conclusions that there are none. You just can't see them.

Some of the most voracious readers I know only ever use libraries. They can't afford to buy (or indeed store) books at the rate they read them. And in case you've forgotten there was a little thing invented a while ago called a kindle.

Poorlykitten · 27/06/2021 08:35

But books also look lovely and smell nice so who wouldn’t want them on view!

catfunk · 27/06/2021 08:41

Fake grass
Grey wood effect flooring
Triangular glass tv stands with chrome legs
Frames up with no photos in them
Live laugh love / relax signs or decals
Shiny bed sheets
Sequinny cushions
Fake fur cushions
Plastic plants
Grey everything
Chunky Lay-z boy 90s sofas
Photos/ pics printed onto canvas
Shiny brass door handles with the pattern around the edge

NewLifeInTheSouth · 27/06/2021 08:53

Poorly If i had 100 I'd happily keep them on view. With almost a thousand it starts to feel like living in a branch of Waterstones. If you have the luxury of devoting a whole spare bedroom to or an extra, private reception room to them then why wouldn't you? A few lovely coffee table type books can look lovely when chosen purely for their ornamental value, but a floor to ceiling shelves and shelves of them (paperbacks especially) in several rooms can look oppressive, scruffy and cluttered.

OutComeTheWolves · 27/06/2021 09:32

@SummerHathCommeth

Oh and FAKE GRASS. It’s just awful for so many reasons.
I don't think it's as simple as that anymore. I've never had fake grass because of environmental concerns but then I was reading the other day about how lawns aren't much better. I think it's quite a complex issue unless you use your lawn as a wildflower meadow.
