I know that it is a question of each to his own etc but what do you find naff in other people's homes? I was invited round to neighbour's today to gawp at their new gas barbecue that is the size of a Challenger tank. They were terribly proud of it and the husband was lovingly caressing it whilst the wife was squealing in anticipation of all the hot sausage her man was going to serve her! All I could think was 'Why? Why? Why?' What do you find naff in other people's homes and why?

These…they creep me out and seem to be bizarrely popular.

Hahaha, love this thread. I’m sitting in my conservatory with vertical blinds. I also have net curtains that I quite like.

Artex ceilings not so much, but too expensive to do anything about it at the moment.

I also really enjoy my feature wall and our electric fireplace.

I better not invite you lot around.

I don’t like formal looking gardens or gardens without flowers.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 26/06/2021 18:36

Anything bought from B&M.

NewLifeInTheSouth · 26/06/2021 18:40

I am in the market for sofas, and was thinking velvet. What kind of velvet is OK??? Please post pics of unacceptably crushed velvet??

All crushed velvet is dreadful.

Regular velvet is fine.

Maddison12 · 26/06/2021 18:41

What's wrong with crushed velvet?! (Asking for a friend, obvsWink)

Also those "you don't have to be mad to live here, but it helps" signs? Where would one purchase one of those?

I'll get my coat...

NewLifeInTheSouth · 26/06/2021 18:43

Feature walls, especially those that have violently patterned wallpaper.

A feature wall of violently patterned wallpaper is vastly preferable to a whole room of the stuff.

I admit I quite like a feature wall and I adore some patterned wallpapers. Some are absolutely beautiful. and usually stupidly expensive But one wall is often enough.

I have seen pics from posh interiors folks (House & Garden/Architectural Digest sort of thing) of drawin' rooms bedecked with velvet sofas, even corduroy. Help me avoid an MN faux pas, I beg you!
If you want to please the MN snobs, this velvet sofa is probably perfectly acceptable but this crushed velvet one probably isn't.
ScrollingLeaves · 26/06/2021 18:47

Velvet is best when it is real velvet not dralon. Not crushed.

Artex can be plaster skimmed over I am fairly sure.

Lepetitpiggy · 26/06/2021 18:48

We have grey kitchen and bathroom and I genuinely had no idea they were naff or popular or whatever they are! I just really like them. Also dark brown john lewis sofa and chair that our horrible ex neighbours sold to us 10 years ago. Most comfy items ever.

Poorlykitten · 26/06/2021 18:50

I think grey is fine just been massively overused and in every room, I blame Hinch.

NewLifeInTheSouth · 26/06/2021 19:09

I saw a house on rightmove once that had the same colour grey walls throughout the whole house with the exact same colour grey carpets throughout, grey kitchen units with grey tiles on the kitchen and bathroom floors. Darker grey sofas and darker grey rugs and curtains and cushion, bedspreads etc.

Looking at it sucked the life out of me.

habibihabibi · 26/06/2021 19:11

We have a curly waterslide from the balcony into the pool in our house . The former owner had waterparks. I don't think you would get it past planning in the UK and the neighbours would think it very naff. I love it.

AntiWorkBrigade · 26/06/2021 19:27

@Petalplucker

I think Mediterranean gardens with bright blue pots etc, only look good in Mediterranean countries where the light is totally different.

And I rarely think that home painted garden murals and home made mosaic table tops look good I'm afraid. Ditto painted terracotta pots.

I bought a load a bright blue ceramic pots a few years ago, and they don’t look as good as I think they should. They look a bit sad. Mystery solved after reading this post.

Personified I was in a shop in France years back that had hideous tanks .
I'm sure they must've been filtered to blazes they were clean.
But think 2 tanks connected by tubes . Black gravel White gravel. Tiny black and white fish

A "coffee table" that was a flat glass tannk on legs with goldfish .

There are worse ones out there Sad
Often with a solitary fish.

I've kept goldfish they are hard work. Ours loved plants but obviously these uber stylish tanks don't have them.
Horrible life for a living animal .

chickenyhead · 26/06/2021 19:36

@Serin

I have a platic flamingo but anymore than 1 is a flocking disgrace.
Blasphemy! Don't want them to be lonely.

I also have a watermelon egg chair which with furry red lining and I made my bed from paper mache and toilet rolls etc. I even stencilled the painted floor.

I don't mind being naff.

Oh my god, that's amazing! Can I come and play at your house please?

Petalplucker · 26/06/2021 19:41

Antiworkbrigade I feel badly for posting that now! The main thing is that you enjoy your garden. And you can get away with bright colours I think in very sunny southern parts of UK, such as Cornwall and the Scilly Isles.

ForestYeti · 26/06/2021 19:45

A home bar, either in the garden or even worse in the house

Poorlykitten · 26/06/2021 19:47

@chickenyhead I need pictures!!

Benjispruce3 · 26/06/2021 19:48

Grey can be great. I have dark grey with brass in my kitchen and it looks mighty fine IMO. I also have pale grey with beige in my bedroom and that is calm and tranquil. I agree that grey everywhere is a bit much but each to their own.

pinkmagnolias · 26/06/2021 19:51

My late parents had crazy paving, fake panelled frames on the walls and that foamy flocked wallpaper painted a rather bright peach. So erm, I don't blink at much tbh

Every istagrammer is now putting fake panels on their walls! Very on trend ie will date ASAP!!!

VroomVrooom · 26/06/2021 20:03

@Whall10

Wondering what people have on their walls instead of family portraits etc?
You really can’t figure it out?

Art and prints.

pinkpapaya · 26/06/2021 20:41

Friends, I give you the double dolphin glass coffee table. Exult the new God! Revel in the magnificence..... I was rendered speechless upon first gazing upon such cetacean splendour!
