How much was your bed?

I bought mine 6-ish years ago from IKEA. Double. Cheapest frame and cheapest mattress. I think it was about £300 all in at the time, including a chest if drawers?!

It has served me well but we could definitely do with an upgrade: literally a bigger bed but also a better quality one.

Some prices have almost made my eyes fall out of my head, so I think I need to marinate on the price for a little while to get used to it.

It almost certainly has to be a divan to fit in my shall bedroom.

One bed in John Lewis was £7000... I'm hoping that your king size bed was a bit cheaper than a car?

A quick google tells me frame would be £200 (ikea king size) mattress was a (bloody) Emma that I got with a marketing discount, so maybe £350 I think. I could sleep on a bench, so as long as it looks ok, comfort is largely irrelevant although the Emma mattress is trying my patience.

OrangeIsNeutral · 23/06/2021 23:04

@Hughbert you wouldn't recommend Emma then? Grin can I ask what's wrong with it!

I just looked up old email confirmation from when we bought new furniture 3 years ago.
Our bed was £750 from Made. It’s a velvet king size ottoman bed which flips up for storage. And the mattress is a memory foam and spring one from Otty and cost £500.

I remember being a bit surprised at the cost of some beds and mattresses too! We were unable to find anything very cheap that didn’t look the totally shit. I don’t regret ours. You do spend a lot of time in bed so it’s worth getting something decent.

PinkPlantCase · 23/06/2021 23:11

When we started out we bought a decent mattress, I don’t remember how much, around £400 maybe and a very cheap bed frame.

After a few house moves we upgraded the frame and bought our ‘forever bed’ that’s solid oak but still quite snazzy looking. That was just under £1,000. It’s beautiful and makes me smile everyday.

OrangeIsNeutral · 23/06/2021 23:13

@Fluffyandsilly thanks for sharing, I appreciate that. Would you say you're happy with your ottoman and mattress? I've been debating ottoman Vs divan but haven't been swayed either way yet.

And yep, I fully understand that it has to be an investment, it's just HOW much of an investment?! I had to marinate on the cost of our Loaf sofa for about 3 years!! I tried to find alternatives and it wasn't until our sofa was hurting me every day and we were on the verge of buying a £1k sofa which was "just okay* that I knew we had to get the Loaf!

I spent ages searching and couldn't find anything I liked so ours is actually a £50 double bed frame from the British heart foundation charity shop because I like more traditional furniture. It's a lovely heavy, solid pine frame (albeit a bit scratched).

Original mattress was £800 odd from dreams but recently replaced with a Nectar hybrid mattress for £450ish.

altiara · 23/06/2021 23:16

1700-1800 in the dreams sale for bed and mattress. It’s an ottoman bed with a big headboard. I bought a double to save space as just me (divorcing) but the bed frame makes it as big as a king divan bed.
Only just got keys to house so not delivered yet! Can’t wait to have a fancy new bed 🤩

ICECream821 · 23/06/2021 23:17

£2,967 to be precise super king tempur mattress was the main cost £2045

iduno · 23/06/2021 23:21

Base with drawers, headboard and mattress was about £500ish. Mattress was pretty shit and we bought a new one a couple of yrs ago. I think it was £569 but I got it for £469, they had one in the back that the cover had come off a tiny bit and it had a dirty mark on it. Cleaned off with a cloth no bother so was worth it!

I wouldn't buy a bed without trying it out in a store now precious ones I just bought online and hence whey they never lasted long or weren't super comfy.

foreverandalways · 23/06/2021 23:21

Our super king electric bed was 5000.....feels like sleeping alone literally and way too big...never again

OrangeIsNeutral · 23/06/2021 23:23

@altiara congratulations! Having a bed allllll to yourself is absolutely luxurious Grin

@foreverandalways I'm sorry, electric bed?! What was electric about it?

My king size bed frame was 550 and is an ottoman with a high heat board and mattress is an otty. Which after two years has started giving us both back ache after completely eradicating my sciatica in the beginning and my husband has never had a sore back/hip. We went away for the weekend recently and were absolutely fine in the hotel mattress. So I wouldn't recommend an otty.

Shodan · 23/06/2021 23:29

XH and I bought a Hypnos mattress and a divan base several years ago for about £2500. The divan base didn't last well and I've just replaced it with a reinforced one from Sonno which was about £450, I think.

The mattress, though, is still in perfect condition and is what I think of as 'old style'- you can turn it over as well as head to foot, so it wears more evenly. Before that one we had a few pillow top types which were hopeless.

MuchTooTired · 23/06/2021 23:31

I got ours off of eBay 😳

Solid wood, massive and proper sturdy for the bargain price of £75.

The mattress was £550 I think in the sale from the local mattress shop. I regret buying it really as it is a bit harder than I’d like, but my babies had a full on breakdown in the shop and I bought the mattress just so I could get out and not have to go back!

isettled · 23/06/2021 23:39

Our superking ottoman bed and mattress was under £800. Think the bed its self was £385. We did get the mattress 50% off thanks to a BlueLightCard discount. However I really rate the Ikea mattresses and that was second choice if the discount hadn't been available

NannyAndJohn · 23/06/2021 23:53

£1145. Could have pushed the boat out a bit more but this had better reviews than the other options we were considering.

Last year I finally replaced my futon which my DM bought for me as a teen (I'm in my 40's), I only changed it because I wanted a bigger bed. I know it sounds grim but I've always been really careful and it was still in really good shape (no stains, didn't smell, no bugs!).

Anyway, new futon cost €260. I want to get a frame with a headboard (it's currently on slats on legs (sorry don't know the English terms), but can't bring myself to fork out over 1000€ for the only one I've found that I like so far (started looking 3 years ago).

noblegreenk · 24/06/2021 00:04

Had ours for 4yrs now. We've got the Ikea Tyssedal king size bed frame - cost about £270. Ikea Horvag pocket sprung mattress - cost around £260. So approx £530 all in. I've been quite impressed with this bed and mattress considering they were pretty cheap. The mattress was a bit too firm for me when we first had it, but I added a deep duvet type mattress topper and it's been perfect.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 24/06/2021 00:10

Have a Radius oak bed frame from Habitat which was about £699 in 2007. Still looks great! Original mattress was about £599 but I only just realised the other day it’s now far too old. Was just looking at sale mattresses earlier, pocket sprung ortho ones around £500.

PickAChew · 24/06/2021 00:15

Got our frame for £400 in barker and stonehouse about 18 years ago. Still fairly pristine metal frame with curved slats. On our 3rd mattress.

MintyCedric · 24/06/2021 00:16

DD and I both have these:

www.bensonsforbeds.co.uk/products/slumberland-clima-airstream-memory-6000-divan-bed-set/

I think they were a hundred quid less (799 each) when I bought ours 3.5 years ago.

It is the comfiest bed I have ever owned...I honestly can't believe what I used to sleep on.

My first friend cat sits for us from time to time and she always comments on how comfy they are too.

MintyCedric · 24/06/2021 00:16

best!

Auntienumber8 · 24/06/2021 00:34

Ours was 1k and that was 19 years ago as DS was a baby and I wanted a much comfier bed.

Titsywoo · 24/06/2021 08:36

We got our bed frame second hand- its a leather sleigh bed with a tv that rises out of the end. So £500 for that (they are about £2k new). Our mattress is expensive but DH has back issues and a tempur is the only thing that helps and the basic one of those is £1500 for our size bed.
