Coffee table books - Would you?

I have recently heard about this trend that has been around for about 10 years Blush. At first I thought it was a bit weird, as the pages are blank, but then I can see why people like the look of the books on a table/shelf.

Now I’m thinking of buying some books to style my coffee table Blush. Do you know anyone that has them? I think I would be embarrassed if someone picked one up only to find out it’s not a real book. Am I being daft even considering the purchase?

Coffee table books - Would you?

I have never seen or heard this.

I would expect to be able to leaf through the pages of a coffee table book. Isn't that the point? They're meant to be luxurious, beautiful, etc etc

I change mine regularly so my nice books aren't just stuck on a book shelf.

icdtap · 01/04/2021 09:45

No!!! What a waste of money. I can't believe this is even a thing. How ridiculous.

Arbadacarba · 01/04/2021 09:49

@ILoveShula

Go to your local high street when the shop reopen. Your friendly local charity shops will have lots of impressive looking books for less than £1 each. Failing that, try WH Smith or TK Maxx
This. Or try eBay/Amazon Marketplace if you don't mind paying postage for a heavy book.

Books about art/architecture often have stylish covers and interesting contents.

Sadly my coffee table is usually cluttered with the very unstylish paperbacks in my 'to read' pile so my elegant hardbacks stay in the shelves.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 01/04/2021 09:54

I’ve got 40 boxes of books in storage ... nope I wouldn’t be buying any stunt books!

Books are there to read, flip through.

Ninkanink · 01/04/2021 10:09

It’s utterly ludicrous on so many levels!

Just buy some real coffee table books and that way you can enrich your own life and that of anyone who visits you. Blank pages in a book, what on earth is the point of that?? Style over substance, and really bloody stupid too.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 01/04/2021 10:29

Unless you use it to doodle? I have blank books but I use these for drawing out things I am making it for my portfolio.

Bluntness100 · 01/04/2021 10:31

God no, how cringe is that? Go on eBay, buy some gorgeous antique books of the classics, like treasure island etc, they are probably cheaper and much classier than putting fake books out.

Bluntness100 · 01/04/2021 10:33

Something like this. So cheap and as said, much classier than fake books,

I've had to spend a lot of time recently, getting rid of actual books! Selling clothes is less of a pain I tell you and I don't especially enjoy that.

So, no. I would never do this! Less is more in my house and I'm forever doing battle with clutter, so I would never consider paying for more clutter!

crumpet · 01/04/2021 10:41

This is just a hilarious concept!

SatsumasOrClementines · 01/04/2021 11:05

If you’re into interiors then ‘For the Love of White’, ‘Eat, Drink, Nap’ and ‘AD at 100’ are on every interior instagrammmer’s coffee table at the moment.

They really aren’t,,😂
AgathaX · 01/04/2021 11:27

This is such a daft concept. If I went to a friend's house and they had a fake book on the table, I really would have to take the piss.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 01/04/2021 11:45

I’d draw something in it for them.

SatsumasOrClementines · 01/04/2021 14:15

@Bluntness100 I’m not talking actual interior designers Grant K Gibson, Sarah Sherman Samuel etc. But the huge amount of standard ‘5k followers/my new home/I love neutrals’ type of interior accounts definitely!

Search #coffeetablebooks in recents and I guarantee you’ll see one or more of those titles.

(I’m not saying it’s a good thing btw, just stating facts.)

SatsumasOrClementines · 01/04/2021 14:18

(Along with the Channel/Dior/Gucci ones that are also everywhere.)

BasiliskStare · 01/04/2021 14:27

For of love of betsy - if you have some big books which you have no where else to store them - aces - coffee table - great ) but "pretend ? books - for me a No - as ever other opinions are available - personally I would not buy a book to put on coffee table specifically - just where they can be stored ( But I have a small house )

goldenshoe · 01/04/2021 21:28

I thought the point of coffee table books was that they were design-y books with lots of images for flicking through and looking at, rather than actual blank books! Just buy some cool looking hardbacks if you like the look, then you won't feel silly if someone looks through them.

RingtheBells · 01/04/2021 21:37

Back in the olden days, wasn't the Next Directory what people had on their coffee tables. On our coffee table is the Radio Times, much more useful than a blank book

1frenchfoodie · 02/04/2021 08:45

Madness!

Janegrey333 · 02/04/2021 18:02

Don’t you have any books at all?Confused

StCharlotte · 02/04/2021 18:15

I'm glad you've seen sense OP. Imagine if someone picked it up!

SatsumasOrClementines I have the V&A Christian Dior book from when I went to the exhibition. It's very well thumbed. Sadly I don't have a coffee table...

echt · 02/04/2021 21:56

I thought this was going to be about the trend for piling books on coffee tables so there's nowhere to put your sodding wine glass.
But this is worse.

Bluesheep8 · 03/04/2021 09:05

I think that’s one of the most genuinely depressing concepts I’ve come across lately. If you read books, put books you like in your rooms, if you don’t, are you really going to arrange blank books on your table?

Me too. How sad. The books a person owns say an awful lot about them. I don't need to spell out what a fake book with blank pages suggests Hmm

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 03/04/2021 13:22

What an utterly batshit concept.
