Two mismatched sofas? What do you think?

I bought an IKEA sofa in blue a few years ago when setting up home after my divorce. I've since been given a cream covered by my mum. IKEA do replacement covers, but I can't work out how to remove the current cover - it would involve taking the sofa apart again, which I don't think I can do easily.

I've attached a photo. The colours in my lounge are all blue, cream, brown. Does it look stupid? Or shall I just get a cream throw? I'm sure it'll slip off all the time - the cushions slip at the best of times and have to be pushed back into place every day, not a major deal, just annoying. My budget is low, so I can't replace the sofa.

Most of us would choose a blue cushion we like and put it on the cream sofa. Repeat if required.

Isolatedizzy · 15/12/2020 21:52

I like the different coloured sofas! It looks great!

NowImmeagain · 15/12/2020 21:53

Ok, thanks.

I guess an additional problem is that the blue cover has been scratched by my cat so covering it or replacing it wouldn't be a bad idea.

Ugh, I'm talking myself into buying replacement covers Confused I've just found a replacement cover on the IKEA site, not too expensive either, but I'm unsure if it's white or cream (why can't they say?!) And can't get to a store.

Also, if the sofas are different styles but similar colour, is that even worse? Confused

I think it looks OK you could make it look better as ppl have said by getting some blue and cream cushions

user1471530109 · 15/12/2020 21:55

I have mismatched sofas deliberately. One in grey leather, the other in cream fabric. I love it! I think your sofas look great and personally, I prefer them mismatched.

inquietant · 15/12/2020 21:57

It's fine. No one will even give it a thought.

The only think that matters is are they comfy.

inquietant · 15/12/2020 21:57

Think = thing.

user1471530109 · 15/12/2020 21:57

Get some throws and cushions. Makes it more cost anyway although mine are often on the bastard floor
What sofa is the IKEA one? Maybe someone can help with the cover question?

CordeliaCroft · 15/12/2020 21:58

I think it looks really nice

Ikeameatballs · 15/12/2020 21:59

I also have deliberately mismatched sofas. Different styles, one teal and one dark grey, both covered in velvet with some scatter cushions with both colours in. I think they look great. And, when one get’s tatty you can replace that one without needing to worry about buying two to match!

SameToo · 15/12/2020 22:06

I like mismatch. I think all matching can be a bit too sterile/catalogue. Which castle is it in the pic?

NowImmeagain · 15/12/2020 22:37

Thanks. I have got cushions but will look for some blue ones (have cream ones at the moment).

The sofa is Kivik.

The castle is Raglan castle in Wales Grin I've since replaced the picture however. I'll try and find a photo .. totally outing though!

I'd paint the walls in a colour that tones better too. That'll help to pull the scheme together and make it all look a bit more deliberate.

poshme · 15/12/2020 22:48

I don't know why, but it looks welcoming.

I'd like to walk in and sit down in either sofa & I'd feel welcome.

Maybe because I like both the pictures & the sofas.

NowImmeagain · 15/12/2020 22:50

Thanks Smile Nice to know it looks welcoming.

It's rented so unsure about painting, but after Christmas I might ask my landlord.

I'm on my phone, so not great, but it looks to ne like the sofas are the same tone. They look nice together.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 15/12/2020 23:16

They look absolutely fine together, and there’s no need to spend money on new covers that your cat will scratch to pieces in no time...

I’d probably get a throw with cream and blue in it for the cream sofa, and some cushions that tie both together. The mismatching look is cosy and welcoming.

NowImmeagain · 15/12/2020 23:22

Thanks. I've found some cushions on the dunelm site. I'll look for a throw.

I never ever have matching sofas, on purpose. Sofas look better when not matching in my opinion. Your room looks very cozy.

NowImmeagain · 16/12/2020 00:14

Thank you Smile

So, overwhelmingly voting for mismatched sofas!

I much prefer mismatched sofas too.

GabbyBN · 16/12/2020 21:51

Not about the sofas but me and partner went to Raglan a few years ago and its a stunning castle, we'd never heard of it before but were in Hay on Wye for the festival for the week and so had a few sight-seeing trips and stumbled upon Raglan on one of our adventures. I was really impressed, and you can even climb up to the tall towers (which are very tall lol) so would definitely recommend anyone if they like that sort of thing and are around that part of the world.

Hay on Wye was beautiful too, if a little busy due to the festival, but the countryside is breath-taking, and I think i enjoyed that holiday more than when we used to go abroad, was just a peaceful chillax of a holiday, couldnt get over how quiet it was when you get outside Hay on Wye, theres nothing but countryside and hills all around. Want to retire there one day, lovely part of the world :)

CaptainM · 17/12/2020 06:30

I also deliberately have mismatched sofas (grey and teal, with cushions & throws pulling the colours together).

I prefer them to matched ones. I'd suggest throwing in some accessories rather than covers. It looks good! 👍🏼

NowImmeagain · 17/12/2020 09:08

@GabbyBN we stayed in a cabin near Hay on Wye Smile It was absolutely beautiful, so quiet and Hay on Wye is a pretty little town. We also went up the tall tower, it's very high!

Thank you @CaptainM Smile I'm not very good at accessories, somehow it ends up looking cluttered, and I like more personal things rather than generic items from Next etc. But I'll have a think ..

So the Op’s house looks nice, the cat won’t be stressed and we have some nice places to visit once we are allowed. Happy days!
