What would you put in this space?

Please can anybody advise?

There is a space between the staircase and the sofa.
Usually, we put spare cushions and the magazine rack there, but we are buying new furniture, and think the space could be used better.
If it was your room, what would you put in the space?
Thanks in advance 💐💐.

Can you show us a picture?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/02/2020 15:59

A console table, with a nice lamp and maybe a little trinket bowl on for your door keys.

HollowTalk · 21/02/2020 15:59

Oh cross post!

HollowTalk · 21/02/2020 16:00

Does the sofa have to go in that position?

PhilCollinsFingerWag · 21/02/2020 16:03

@Hollowtalk, it’s only a small living room, so we can’t put it anywhere else really. If we moved it forward it’d block the door from the kitchen to the living room, as we also have two armchairs.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz, a console table and lamp is a good idea.

It’s a shame I can’t pull the sofa forward or I’d put a small slim sideboard in it against the staircase.

Floor lamp or a table with drawers facing out with a lamp on top

Lipperfromchipper · 21/02/2020 16:10

Tbh I think if you put anything in there it will just look cramped and cluttered...I would leave it. But that’s just me...

HollowTalk · 21/02/2020 16:11

I agree - I would leave it clear.

lemontreebird · 21/02/2020 16:23

Nice storage box.
Bean bag for extra seating.
Cushion for dog.
Cat 'kennel' for cat. Ours loves his!
Cat tree.
Slim table with lamp. Maybe battery powered? I don't see a socket. Perhaps a shelf below for a storage box.
Toy box.

PixieDustt · 21/02/2020 16:30

I would probably put a slim unit in there from Ikea with a lamp on.

Dozer · 21/02/2020 16:34

Slim table or storage box.

fedup21 · 21/02/2020 16:40

I wouldn’t put anything there.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 21/02/2020 19:02

I would leave it empty as it’ll look much clearer and less cluttered. But if you wanted something maybe a shallow shelf so it’s just above the back of the sofa. This is only if you like ornaments, photo frames etc.

purplepingu · 21/02/2020 19:03

A houseplant?

LochJessMonster · 21/02/2020 19:05

I’d put a tall plant or tall lamp but leave the rest clear

HerRoyalNotness · 21/02/2020 19:05

If you had an armchair there instead of the sofa I’d ouf a book case there

TrickyKid · 21/02/2020 19:08

I'd leave it clear. Does the sofa have to go there?

Bluesheep8 · 22/02/2020 10:06

You can't really put anything there I don't think. It would look silly. Just my opinion.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 22/02/2020 10:12

Could you show us the rest of the room? Maybe we could think of an alternative furniture arrangement that you haven’t thought of?

EL8888 · 22/02/2020 13:27

Another vote for console table from me

Belindabelle · 22/02/2020 14:28

Can you take a photograph showing the sofa and stairs from the front.

Spartonian · 22/02/2020 14:39

Lamp or a nice tall indoor plant

goingoverground · 22/02/2020 15:13

I think I would build a fake wall with cupboards/shelves floor to ceiling all the way to the foot of the staircase and that are the same width as the wall and made from plasterboard for the back and sides rather than wood so it looks like a wall IYSWIM. I would have handless doors to make a cupboard up to the height of the back of the sofa or possibly the ceiling. Again you can make it look like a wall, a bit like this photo. It's not hard (nor expensive) to do, just google how to make a stud wall. You can use the part of the cupboard that is behind the sofa for storing things that you don't often use eg Christmas decorations, wrapping paper, suitcases.

You could have shelves at the top or another cupboard. If you want more light to the staircase you could have the "fake wall cupboards" up to the top of the banister then shelves with no back to let the light through.

I grew up in a house that had a "secret" wall, with skirting board, dado rail and picture rail. You pressed on it and it opened to reveal a walk in cupboard. We loved it, it was like being in the Famous Five!
