What colour walls with Navy and Copper/orange living room?

I'm stumped.

I'm in the middle of choosing new sofa, refurbing a couple of chairs, new rug, new lampshade to do my living room. I moved in 3 years ago and it's a bland grubby blascape. We've got a few items to work around and have decided on a mid-navy blue and bronze/copper/orange tone scheme. Some of our furniture is vaguely midcentury.

We'll probably have plainish textiles on the sofa/chairs and more vibrant cushions, not sure about rug and curtains yet but could be plain or could be more statement.

I have no idea what wall colour to put with these!

The room is fairly big (5m x 3m?), has full width patio doors at one end, and gets afternoon sun.

We use the room more for afternoons and evenings rather than early mornings when it's all a bit grey.

Walls - cream? putty/stone? light blue feels wrong, is it? mid blue? navy blue? copper?! Wink

So what exactly is navy and what’s copper at the moment?

You can go for navy/blue walls and copper sofas. I would be tempted to use a green/olive or maybe pink carpet with that, but that’s very subjective.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 19/09/2019 14:55

So, what are the items you are working around?

Owlsintowels · 19/09/2019 15:11

Ahh OK more info needed!
At the moment we're mentally committed to:
Blue/Navy sofa (poss G Plan, poss John Lewis
Blue/Navy, poss with some copper tones, armchairs x2 (Halabala / East Germany 30s type style)
Small kids armchair in a mid blue/cream scandi print
Big G plan sideboard in a browny orange wood
Coffee table with Navy/metallic nature print top
Small side table in orangey brown wood, quite vintage style
Small side table with Navy / Copper geometric print vinyl on top

Room has a warm colour wood floor
Walls currently an off white

Curtains - no idea what style yet, will cover the patio doors, likely to be full length and near full width on one end

Rug - we want a big one, no colour / style decided yet

One corner has a big double width toy cupboard, similar size to a wardrobe. Murky mid blue clour doors. The door colour could be changed if necessary

So the idea is more of the furniture has mid blue to navy tones, enhanced with some metallic bronze / copper bits. And a lot of the wood is a similar warm orangey colour.

I was hoping the right wall colour would set it all off beautifully.

I'll try and find some pics of similar rooms with diff wall colours

These are vaguely the right vibe I suppose, but I'm not convinced about the walls. Full on navy walls feels too much, but the greys feel a bit drab. I want the room to feel warm and inviting

Also I keep saying Navy, but I think I mean more mid blue for furniture, maybe even slightly teal / ocean blue

And overall style is prob midcentury / art deco, but not overtly so, more a gentle nod

A pale warm grey will always look great, with any furniture.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 19/09/2019 16:05

A muted pink on the walls?
Neptune have some good muted colours. Look up Cassandra Ellis Instagram, she has lots of colour inspiration in those type of colours.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 19/09/2019 16:05

Art Deco would be copper and golds as well.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 19/09/2019 16:08

See u would turn it around, I’ll have the walls blue and the furniture in coppers and golds and maybe pink to go with the mid century wood.

Try a mood board. Take photos of the existing stuff, add the variables and the paint and fabric swatches.

SheeshazAZ09 · 19/09/2019 16:16

I'd go for white on the walls. Copper/orange highlights via accessories. With the navy blue and copper, the white walls will really light up the room.

BigusBumus · 19/09/2019 16:49

I have a Snug thats the same kind of colours. I basically stole all my ideas from these 2 photos. Its a fab room and we all ten to go in there and not the main sitting room! (These are the 2 photos, not my actual snug). The walls are Hicks Blue by Little Greene.

Pink has completely thrown me! I'll try to get my head around that and have a look online

Those pics are lovely Bigusbumus, very similar vibe!

We haven't bought the sofa yet but I hate leather sofas, though I do admit that one looks nice. Would a blue sofa be too much and ruin the look? Or that tobacco colour in a fabric, would that work?

Look for navy living rooms on Pinterest.

Tons of inspiration there as well.

Owlsintowels · 19/09/2019 21:48

@ChardonnaysDistantCousin all the Pinterest hits for navy living rooms has navy walls and non navy furniture!

I do think I want to stick with blue furniture and accessories, with lots of copper and bronze bits

So options are white, cream, grey, muted pink, or more navy

Anything else that might work?

With navy furniture definitely no navy walls.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 19/09/2019 22:05

If you search for navy/blue sofa then most rooms have white walls.

BigusBumus · 19/09/2019 23:50

Owlsintowels I also hate leather sofas but we have a second hand Chestnut coloured one in a cool shape as we have 3 dogs that get on it. It's not that old fashioned look chocolate brown with padded arms 😂

SkintSanta · 20/09/2019 01:04

Excusing the baby mess, and the fact this was immediately after the decorator finished, we have blue on blue and absolutely love it. Wall colour is farrow and ball.

Farrow and Ball have some new orange and navy shades. I saw them yesterday.

Lyingonthesofainthedark · 20/09/2019 09:39

Although frankly, one looks like magnolia!

Aozora13 · 20/09/2019 09:39

I think I’d go either white or a pale dusky pink. Much as I love dark walls I think blue on blue would be tricky to get right, and I’m not sure about grey or cream with copper. My friend has a bluey-teal mid-century style sofa and it’s lush!

ruralcat · 20/09/2019 10:00

We have farrow and ball strong white on our walls, it's a lovely subtle and warm grey that looks great with our blue furnishings.

Owlsintowels · 21/09/2019 00:28

What do people think about this wall colour with blues? This feels like it could be our room, similar amount of light and artfully placed things clutter

Lyingonthesofainthedark · 21/09/2019 09:58

That could work. You would need an accent colour, eg for accessories. Woodwork white or Wimborne white type of thing. Because it's a west facing room, it will look quite cold in the morning and brighter in the afternoon. That will work if you don't use the room much in the morning.
