What paint colour for this room? It's a tricky one..

I've been trying to choose paint colours for this room for weeks and I haven't a clue. It's a dining room in the middle of the house so light deprived. It has four doors leading off the room but no direct windows to the outside. It's a Victorian mid terrace with red and black tiles. I have gone through the whole farrow and ball range studying the colours but still no clue! Lots of tester pots used and from Little Greene too but I just can't find a colour that seems to work. Any advise so so welcome :)

The chairs can change too so it doesn't matter if there is a clash

I would keep it white, there are shades of white for dark rooms I believe.
I would paint the furniture though, I think it clashes with the floor.

Ooo I like those floor tiles! It's a difficult one as you should usually choose fabrics before paint but since there are no windows...

What colours are in the rest of your house? If be tempted to keep it a light neutral colour. What colour are the sample paints on the wall?

CocoLoco87 · 17/05/2018 06:54

And I agree with pp about the colour of the furniture. It needs painting, or I would use a darker wood.

Do you think paint the table too or just the chairs?

On the walls is a layer of little Greene pale clay at the moment.

The other rooms have terracotta tiles in the kitchen and are all painted white as this is the first room I'm decorating.

On the wall is a sample of clunch, oval room blue and new white by f&b. I wasn't keen on the new white as it was very yellow.

I like clunch! Although the name makes me think of clench and clutching pearls lol. A great mumsnet colour Grin

CocoLoco87 · 17/05/2018 08:34

Table and chairs like this maybe?

The floor makes it tricky I think.
I think either white walls and painted furniture (like Coco suggested) or perhaps a very light pink.

I know your floor isn’t white, but the effect of brights with white or white and pink is cheerful.

AnnieAnoniMouser · 17/05/2018 08:46

Definitely not pink with those floor tiles.

I’d go for a white that goes with the tiles, so an old white rather than a bright white.

Rainyshowers · 17/05/2018 08:48

I'm not keen on pastel shades but could do an off pink like dimity in f&b so it's more subtle but warming? Could that work maybe

Like this but without the grey?

Oh, and I’d leave the table as it is and strip back the chairs if possible, if not I’d paint the chairs white too.

Annie Sloan does wall paint too, have a look at those.

Jammycustard · 17/05/2018 08:51

Found some similar(ish) coloured tiles with a very slight pink and light walls.

I was thinking a stronger colour to balance with the floor so maybe elephants breath or Joa's white. You can tell which colour card i have! I'm happy to use other paints too but just thinking about colours at the moment

Jammy. The OP’s floor tiles are red & black.

Rainyshowers · 17/05/2018 08:55

Jammycustard ooohh what colour is in the bathroom? I like it a lot. Is it a grey/pink? I'm looking at grey's too but not sure if they will be dingy in a light deprived room. The room is east facing too. But it looks good with the tiles. How did you find the pic?

This is so helpful. More ideas super welcome!

I like clunch but not so keen on paint with a green tint.

Jammycustard · 17/05/2018 09:03

Yes Annie I know, as are the tiles in the bathroom.
OP I searched ‘pink walls with terracotta tiles’ on Pinterest so I’m not sure what exact paint colours they are. The walls in the bathroom do look like a very slight grey. Maybe try some testers.
I think white will probably only work if the floor is white, but that’s just my opinion.
Don’t be afraid to use colour in a room without much light. I have a teal internal dining room and a dark blue cloak room (no window) and it works. I suggested the pink to warm it up a bit as tiles can look cold.

thatsjustmyface · 17/05/2018 10:56

Lovely room. I'd be tempted to paint the wooden built-in cupboards in an off-white eggshell to draw the eye down to the lovely floor.

CocoLoco87 · 17/05/2018 15:05

I'd go for a slight greyish wall colour. Sort of ivory with a hint of grey. Not elephant grey.

ss2011 · 17/05/2018 17:05

I love your floor...you are lucky to have original Victorian floor tiles....I am just about to put Victorian tiles back in my hallway and I asked F&B for some colour advice...they suggested skimming stone would look good and work with either terracotta tiles (like yours ) or some of the other tiles I am looking at, and in my rather dark hallway...... I think this would like nice in your room too.... (this said I think I am now going for dulux paint throughout my house to save money...but still think skimming stone is lovely)....

Rainyshowers · 17/05/2018 19:04

I got a sample of dimity and skimming stone so will give them a try. If anyone can find the image of the bath online that would be fab. I can then see if it says what paint was used. I did look at taupe but not sure if I will end up in a brown puddle of a room!

I'll paint the chairs an off white and probs the top cupboard to balance the room.
