What paint colour for this room? It's a tricky one..

I've been trying to choose paint colours for this room for weeks and I haven't a clue. It's a dining room in the middle of the house so light deprived. It has four doors leading off the room but no direct windows to the outside. It's a Victorian mid terrace with red and black tiles. I have gone through the whole farrow and ball range studying the colours but still no clue! Lots of tester pots used and from Little Greene too but I just can't find a colour that seems to work. Any advise so so welcome :)

I just found my tiles with elephants breath. What do you think?

My first thought was burnished gold! Then a more sensible pale yellow with those tiles

Racecardriver · 17/05/2018 20:55

Greenish grey but very very light

DramaAlpaca · 17/05/2018 20:56

I'd go for a pale grey on the walls, and I like the chairs as they are.

grasspigeons · 17/05/2018 21:07

id go quite a strong bluey grey

Jonbb · 17/05/2018 21:12

Perhaps paint the wall cupboard too, it doesn't look right. I've done a table just painting the legs annie sloane cream and leaving the top natural and it looks quite good. You could do the chairs too.

I painted a kitchen in elephants breath. I think it would work well in your room on the walls. It is definitely more green but warm. White looks unfinished in that room. Keep the brickwork of the fireplace a different colour.

EightdaysaweekIloveu · 17/05/2018 21:13

Grey would be too cold against the tiles.

Jonbb · 17/05/2018 21:14

Elephant's breath looks great with those tiles. Grey is going out of fashion but I still like it!

RubberJohnny · 17/05/2018 21:15

Honestly, blue black f&b, bloody dark but will make your tiles sing. Highlight with copper / gold and it'll look great. If a room is dark, go with the darkness not against it.

RubberJohnny · 17/05/2018 21:19

Using it against terracotta and warm brick colours, quick google search..

Love your floor. Envy

I'd go dark. Maybe dark green like this.

I think the grey looks cold-including skimming stone. The pale pinky grey of the bathroom looks lovely, though. You could also paint the cupboards an even lighter off white, such as pointing

Rainyshowers · 18/05/2018 13:34

The bathroom has a pink bath and pale grey walls. I'm liking the pink/ grey look at the moment but need to find the colours in warm tones

Does anyone know of a dusty subtle pink?

Calamine - Farrow & Ball is pretty dusky on the walls.

EightdaysaweekIloveu · 19/05/2018 19:43

Old Rose-Neptune.

Have you considered Farrow and Ball's Setting Plaster? It looks exactly as it sounds - not too pink. I have it in my kitchen with terracotta tiles (admittedly slightly less red than yours).

Ketzele · 20/05/2018 00:28

It's a dining room, and a dark room, so I would go dark and dramatic. Either a blue (F+B Hague blue, Paint and Paper Library Squid Ink), grey (Mylands Leadenhall, Paint and Paper Library Btwn Dog + Wolf), or green (Paint and Paper Library The Botanist). The palest I would go is Mylands Shoreditch or F+B Hardwick White.

On pink, I think it's really hard to find the exact right pink. Mylands has some really nice ones, and Paint and Paper Library has Plaster in five intensities. I reckon Plaster II and Plaster III are best.

Rainyshowers · 20/05/2018 09:19

Although it's a dining room it leads onto a small kitchen so is our only table and kind of part of the kitchen (but not open plan). I'm not sure I can see myself eating my Weetabix in a dark dark blue room at 7am. But maybe I'm not imaginative enough!

I'd be brave and do a deep terracotta feature wall at least to bring in the tiles. If the room is really dark there's not much that will change it and reds are lovely in dining rooms. I'd then do something like zoffany Paris grey or quarter Paris grey on the walls and any woodwork and paint the furniture in a mix and match of the colours. Be bold, use soft lighting and accessorise.

Rainyshowers · 20/05/2018 09:51

This is completely different but what about oval room blue on all the walls?

Okay I've made progress. I've painted the walls a soft grey (skimming stone) and the woodwork a creamy white (wimborne white) both f&b. I'm now trying to pick colours for the alcove. I've put on a sample of downpipe which is a lead grey. What do you think? And I need to choose a colour to paint the door. Originally I wanted a blue but now think I might be bringing in too much colour into the space. The floor is pretty dramatic already! Maybe just paint it the same as the woodwork. Any colour advice really would be helpful.

I was also thinking of painting the top cupboard a dusky pink. But that's choosing colours for the alcove, door and top cupboard to match what's there. Tricky
